Full Version: Do Your Maltese Let You "Sleep-In"?
Maltese discussion forum home > Pertaining to: > Everything else...
TotallyTotoNTuffy
I made arrangements to go into work a little later this morning, instead of the usual 7 a.m. so I didn't set the alarm for 5 a.m. Usually on my days off, my maltese inspectors will let me slide until 6 a.m., but that's about it. This morning was PERFECT sleeping weather. The A/C was quietly humming and it's raining outside so my bedroom was still dark. But that didn't matter to Toto. How can a small dog magically increase his size and weight of his foot steps? It's like he puts on metal jacketed army boots and proceeds to heavily walk all around the king size bed to get me to stir. And then the whining starts if that doesn't work.

"Get Up!! Get Up!! Do you know what time it is??" I mean I understand the "bathroom thing", but it doesn't apply with 24/7 accessible wee wee pads and carpeted stairs next to the bed. "It's past my breakfast time!!" "My stomach is growling!!" So bleary eyed I stumble to the kitchen and give both of them a spoonful of food with meds since I try to wait an hour before feeding them breakfast afterward.

And then everything is right in their world. So right that once I'm up and give them their meds THEY BOTH CURL UP AND GO BACK TO SLEEP!!!! What is up with THAT???

P.S. - I would be remiss not to mention sister Tuffy. She follows Toto lead and when I finally get up she'll give a little high pitched shriek of glee to complete the act.

Deb
LuvMyFurbaby
LOL....Mia will sleep in and let me sleep, Cody will actually climb on me and starts kissing me if he needs to go out. Do you know how heavy a 9lb dog is on a full bladder????? smstarz.gif Now with KCee as soon as he stirs I take him out I have learned with him if you know what I mean. huh.gif
Sophie
No, it is Sophie's duty to wake me up every morning no later than 6 a.m. by standing on my chest and barking in my face! Once I'm up they both have the tenacity to climb in the their beds by the back door and go to sleep! How rude is that??? wacko1.gif

Linda
CloudClan
YES. Mostly. My Cloud was the best about this. He pretty much always let me sleep in. He would even refuse to bark to wake me up. Instead he would whisper woof in a pee emergency.

Cadeau is also really great about letting me cuddle in in the morning. I think he would rather have me stay there with him than get up and go to work.

Cameo will let me change my schedule, but only so far. If she starts hearing other things going on she will often get hunger pains and start to let me know she expects my attention. She likes to lick my eyelids to wake me up.

I think if you are like me and sleep in whenever you have the chance (bc I am such a night owl), they get in that habit. On the other hand if you rarely sleep-in then they will think it is very important to wake you up.
Dixie's Mama
It must be a Maltese rule or something. My slave has to be up then I can go back to sleep. I get awakened each morning by a Dixie face wash. Ears, nose, eyes and on & on until Mommy wakes up. This morning she tried at 4 AM first. I cover my face with my hand at that hour and she gives up and goes back to sleep. Once up she doesn't want to go out or eat. She wants to play. UGH. Of course I do.
BeckyBC03
Lilly loves to sleep in with us wub.gif Sometimes on the weekends I have to put her down so she can use her pad but she always comes right back to the bedroom and uses her paws on the side of the bed to let me know she is ready to come back up. We trained her well because my boyfriend and I like to sleep in until 11 or so on the weekends. The only reason I am up today is because Lilly had to be at the groomer early this morning.

LOL! Mine are the total opposite! Every morning I'm the one saying "Ok, girls, it's time to get up. Come on, come on! We have to get up!" It takes me at least 15 minutes to get my lazy girls to get moving. tongue.gif
Sassy's mommy
Deb I feel your pain.....gotta love your little fluffy alarm clocks. wub.gif Sassy would sleep-in or at least lay with me all day if I wanted to stay in bed. She has her pee-pee box/pads and she will go on her own and then come back to bed. I am home during the day and she doesn't eat until lunch so she is good to go in the mornings. I love her schedule.
JMM
Soda use to...but he's such a pig he eventually bugs me until I feed him. He will happily go right back to bed (oinker!).

Peeps, if we don't get up, will sleep until he has to go out and then whine to wake me. After that he will entertain himself in the bedroom for 1-2 hours before bugging me to get up.
lillady
Kosmo sleeps in his crate at night which is in our walk in closet. I cover it with a thin blanket (always have since he was a pup) so he has privacy. He doesn't get up until we get him up. We can sleep in as late as 11 (which doesn't happen often) and he won't make a peep. biggrin.gif
Cosy
Cosy will sleep as long as I do, but Toy usually has to make a wee pad run and I have to let her out of my daughter's
room as she is too comatose to do it herself. (teenagers!) The good news is she will go back to sleep after letting me
know she is eternally grateful by licking my face off. (either that or she likes my moisturizer)
MrBentleysMom
Bentley never wakes me up, I wake him up every morning. He will sleep as late as we sleep. Most days we even get up, get dressed, eat breakfast and he stays in bed. He looks up every now and then to see what we are doing, but he stays in bed curled up on my pillow. I think he waits for me to get every morning so he can steal my spot. Every now and then I will have to make him get up (around noon) because I know he must have to potty. But once he is up, he is up and ready to play!
Krystal
For the most part she will, but if I have to get up to use the restroom or I roll over or even open an eye she thinks its time to wake up! She will attack me with kisses and try to get me up....I just have to roll over and cover my face and she knows that its not time to get up yet!
Crystal&Zoe
Zoe is just like her mommy, loves to sleep in. wub.gif Jett however is, shall we say, food motivated! He has at least gotten to the place where he waits until 7:00 to wake me for breakfast! But thankfully he has gotten to the point where he will go back to sleep after his tummy is full and his bladder is empty for those few occasions that I CAN sleep in. And yes in that order, breakfast first and bladder second! HistericalSmiley.gif
momtoboo
What's a "sleep-in"? Is that when you get to sleep past 7 am? Boo & Hannah take turns doing all sorts of things to wake me. I think Hannah found the exact right method though, she pulls my cover off, peels me like a banana, then tries to jerk the pillow right out from under my head. smpullhair.gif
Sophie
That is so funny! What a smart girl Ms. Hannah is. smile.gif

My Tyson will also sleep in as long as I want to sleep. In fact I have to practically drag him out of his crate in our bedroom every morning. What a sweetie! Linda
dogloverx3
I haven't been allowed to sleep past 6.00 a.m in 20 LOOONG years ( when I got my first small dog ) . I am usually poked awake by P.C in the extremely early hours , Arabella then leaps about in excitement barking , and the morning ritual is completed by Teddy and his patented Lhasa tongue bath . My other 3 would stay in bed longer but my 3 early risers make slumber IMPOSSIBLE smcry.gif . Sarah
luvmymacy
Sprout has me up bright and early!
bonniesmom
Bonbon wub.gif sleeps (or stays quiet) as long as I do, or even longer. Maybe she's still on California time - of course I do keep
her up late at night.... rolleyes.gif

Chloe never wakes me but one of my cats wakes me up every morning to eat. He will walk all over me, meowing in my face and then he will lightly bite my arm to get my attention. Once I move slightly, Chloe will then jump on me and kiss my face all over to join in on the fun and she will play with my hair with her paws and give me a head message. After I feed them, (which half the time Chloe will not eat in the morning) they go back in my bed to sleep. On the weekends, if I go back to bed Chloe will stay there as long as I do as will my two cats.
TheButtercup
i am soooooooooooooo lucky in this aspect, i know that any future dog i get will be the complete opposite. the buttercup will sleep as long as i am on the bed. when i wake up to go to work, she rolls over with a giant SIGH to alert me to her annoyance ("Um... bed... moving? Can you not do that, please?") and then she'll magically appear in MY spot on the bed when i come back in after my shower. huh. wonder how that happens.
when i was sick earlier this spring, she slept right there with me in my 12hr sleeps. she'd use her steps to get to her potty pad or water, but mostly just stay cozied up next to me. she's a sleeper smile.gif

ps.... she looooooved sleeping out on your patio, deb. sticking her face thru the rails and sleeping in the windy days... oh wait, that was me. hahahahahahahah
trvlnut
For those of you whose dogs sleep-in, about what age did they begin?
Nikki's Mom
Nikki wakes me up around 6:30. Every once in a while, she'll sleep late. Sometimes I ignore her and she'll go back to sleep for a while. Once I'm up, I make my coffee and then she curls up on my lap and goes to sleep while I drink my coffee. biggrin.gif I had to stop feeding her early in the morning because all she wants to do until around 8-ish is to nap curled up on my lap.

Ah, the life of a Maltese!!!
CeeCee's Mom
CeeCee is a late sleeper and I am the one up.........I have to wake her up!!!! I let her sleep until after I have my coffee and read newspapers on the internet in the morning. It is my quiet time and she is sound asleep!!!! I guess I am lucky~~~~
08chrissy08
Jazz and Pixie are both a couple of lazy butts in the morning. They will go potty at about 7am and then as soon as they are done, it's back to bed until noon if I let them!
Moxie'sMom
Mox will go to beddie by in his crate right by my side, at 1:00AM or whenever we go to sleep. He'll go to make a last minute pee, then run into his bed to get his bedtime cookie (so cute... wub.gif wub.gif he sticks his little paws out of the crate) we cover his crate and he goes to bed.

He loves to sleep so he won't wake up until we get up and take him to pee again. Of course my DH gets up earlier than I for work, he lets Mox out to pee and then mox will run up the ramp to Mommy and give me tons of kisses until I finally get up. It's like he hasn't seen Mommy in years! Then we cuddle together for as long as I want.

No wonder, the DH is jealous. Mox loves to sleep with me. He's been like this since the beginning. And he doesn't make a peep, my precious boy!

I miss sleeping with my malt..but Moxie is so much smaller than Mo, My husband is alfraid he's crush him. I miss my warm fluff with me..who knows maybe one day. but for now he loves his crate, so it's fine with me. wub.gif
wolfieinthehouse
Wolfie would sleep into the afternoon if someone was in bed with him.

Its only once the bed is empty that he says "Take me downstairs (he won't go down them himself)"
Max & Rocky
I get up pretty early myself, weekend or not and of course, when I get up and go downstairs, the entire crew follows.

The amazing thing for Peg and I is that these guys have hearing that is 100 times better than any human. If Peg so much as moves a foot slightly under the sheets, everyone downstairs who is on hyper alert, knows it and immediately runs upstairs so they can be the first to say good morning to her, by standing on her chest and licking her in the face.

The bed does not make a sound... but they still know.

Even if she doesn't move, one of them will still be on watch duty and will go upstairs every 20 or 30 minutes to check on her. The funny thing we notice is that sometimes it is Rocky, sometimes Max, and sometimes Chance. They seem to share equally that duty and on any given morning, there will just be one dog pulling this duty and everyone else stays downstairs until she moves. tongue.gif

I keep looking for the doggy duty sign up sheet, but I've never figured out just how they coordinate all of this... but they do.

How cute!
Chloe will let me sleep in but the moment I stir she jumps right on my stomache and sticks her nose in my face. tender.gif GOtta love her.
Bonnie's Mommie
Right now, since I'm not working, we hit the snooze button a few times. But, Bonnie, when she's good and ready, will jump off the bed, announcing that "IT'S TIME TO GET UP AND FEED ME, WOMAN". shocked.gif

maggie does something similar, whenever we stir, she first looks at us and makes sure we're not just rolling over, but if our eyes open for a second she is on top of our heads ready to go pee, her bladder is the size of a quarter i think, but other than that all 3 let us sleep till whenever we get up

do you think that the end of daylight savings time might have had anything to do with it???

Mandi would always always always wake me up and make sure I stayed up when I got up. That was her happy time and she was soo hyper in the mornings. Rugby is quite the oposite (which I really really don't mind at all! lol). His favorite time in the morning is crawling his way up towards the head of the bed and rolling over and giving me kisses upside-down and getting belly rubs. wub.gif Once I drag him out of bed he has enough energy to get up and play a bit though. wink.gif
cindy6755
sleep-in? everyone in this house gets up at 530am they all go out and then come in for their treat and then they all fall right back to sleep, while I get ready for work. At least on weekend I can go back to sleep with them
Deborah
Rylee will let me sleep as long as I want. I go to bed late but she will not leave my side. Now this having to go potty at 2 am is not fun.
gibbert
LOL - that's so sweet!
Yes, my 2 totally let me sleep in - and I consider myself very lucky! Tchelsi and Tatumn will sleep as late as I want, and will NOT get up until I do. The early morning is Tchelsi's very favorite time to snuggle. *heaven*

isnt that the BEST?!?!? wub.gif as soon as i hit the snooze button for the first of 506 times... the buttercup snuggles up against me as CLOSE as she can and lets out a huge *sigh*.... that way she lets me know that she does NOT want mommy to get up and leave...even if it is only to the shower!!!
Harley & Dakotas Mum
Mine have gotten MUCH better with age ..... when they were younger, it was a wake up between 5 and 6 am - weekends included!

Now though, on weekends, I can sleep as late as I like mostly. If Harley needs to pee, he will wake me by doing soft little 'whoof . whhhooof, whooooooff' noises. Dakota wont wake me though, she has jumped off the bed in the past & pee'd next to the back door - my fault - so now, if I hear her jump off the bed, I'm wide awake, bolting to the back door to open it for her!

If I want to go back for more zzz's, they are both pretty gracious - unless they are hungry - then they wont let me sleep anymore, they will jump all over me, trying to give me kisses until I get up & feed them!

Thankfully, they both LOVE afternoon naps with me on the sofa!!
Kara
Milly would let me sleep all day, buy Murphy makes sure I am awake when he wants me to be...although he isnt too bad I can manage to get him to lie back down and snuggle in, but he likes to get real close to my face and wait til I open my eyes...scares the heck out of me most of the time...haha
Kutsmail1
Zippy can't stand to take any chances that she might miss something. The household has slept late IF it is 6 am! I have tried saying "Zippy night night as it sometimes buys me an extra couple of min. to come to my senses. I've tried hiding my face under the covers, but alas, that is why she was given paws. Once she has pawed covers back, she then proceeds to wash my face with great urgency. I hurry to accomodate her knowing full well that hubby lets her out anyway before he leaves for work. As soon as her little feet hit the floor, she runs for the toy basket! Once she understands Mommy does NOT want to play at 6 am, she will concede and go back to sleep for about 30 min. So Mommy sucks it up...and gets the day started.

OMG when Chloe was still with us it was a case 'do you mind????? I'm trying to sleep here!! LOL.gif

If she was laying across my legs/arms/tummy or whatever and I tried to 'get out' I got such a big growl from her!!

You would think I had a great dane or something on the bed.
HistericalSmiley.gif

Mind you take a look at her sleeping on our bed!!

Oh how I miss that now smcry.gif smcry.gif

Chloe looks so cute sleeping on your bed.

Haha, Milly sounds just like CHloe was, if we go to move Mill while sleeping she too will growl, and this morning I had to get up at 7 and she kept sneaking under the blankets cause she didnt want to get up. She is so funny.
