I haven't been on for a while, but I just saw the Obama press conference and he said his little girl is allergic to dogs, so their choice for a puppy is limited!!

how great will it be if we had a Maltese in the White House?!?!?

darn if I had a litter in Chicago I would show up on their doorstep with a puppy in a basket and registration papers under "Barack Obama"

We should look for a retired show dog or a pure bred rescue for them

really?? The poodle part is hypoallergenic but labs?? You can start sneezing at the mention of them!

I think a Bichon might be the front runner - quite a good choice . They were also looking at Tzu's - who are a bit more child friendly than Malts , they are much sturdier . I would LOVE a rescue to end up in the White House Sarah

I know they were on the news interviewing the breeder even though they had mentioned a rescue.

I am a little confused; I thought all these breeds are still creating an allergic reaction, even if not as bad as labs and such...

There is no guarantee that a labradoodle or golden doodle will be "hypoallergenic"; they could shed just like retrievers. Its definitely safer going with a purebred "hypoallergenic" puppy, hopefully a rescue.

No the Bichon should be ok with allergies. But then again until she spnds time with the actual dog you never know thats what the news said they were doing AND they called the Labradoodles hypoallergenic????

Dorothy and I were ruminating about suggesting a Maltese. I just emailed our President Elect with the suggestion, and NMR's web address. I included that they are close to Chicago, but who knows if the message will get to anyone who would forward it to the First Family.

For what it's worth, I hope that he doesn't pick a malt. I think it may lead to a "rush" for maltese puppies and therefore more puppy mill demand.

Sadly, I think this is probably true. I would LOVE it if they picked a rescue or shelter dog! What a good example that would be for people!

Popularity destroys the health of the breed because it brings out all the greeders. It breaks my heart to see all the health problems in Yorkies since they became so popular.

True (about puppymill dogs), unless they really stress the rescue angle, which he's already doing.

I would love the Obamas to get a Malt, but I gotta second the person who was concerned about the popularity. This is obviously going to be a big news thing, and there are certain to be copy-cats out for the "cheapest" Malt they can find. There's just no win-win situation on this one. I do hope they find a rescue, being that this is the Soon-to-be first family, I am sure they can get a nice one that will fit their needs.

Peg and I also support Small Paws Rescue, which mostly rescues Bichons, but they do also rescue Maltese when needed. I just love the heck out of what these people are doing and the very large number of dogs they manage to rescue.... I'm going off subject again...


Anyway... I'm with Sarah on this and think a Bichon might be a better dog for them but whatever the case, if they get a little white dog of any type, I think ANY little white dog breed will suddenly become extremely popular... which has both a good and bad side to it.

I hope they get a furbaby that they will enjoy and love no matter what color he or she is. I think they would love a maltese though or even a yorkie.

According to the NBC Puppy Poll on the 6:00 news, the vote was as follows:
Lab - 32%
Goldendoodle - 24%
Beagle - 22%
Shih Tzu - 22%

Maltese weren't even mentioned. At first I thought a rescue Malt would be great, but now I'm not so sure because of the
popularity/puppymill issue - but if they stressed it was a rescue, and had lots of publicity about puppymills, maybe...

I hope they don't pick a labradoodle or a goldendoodle - it's another endorsement that 'designer dogs' are cool to have, which no breed needs.


And I also hope they don't get a maltese - although it would be neat to see such a 'famous' maltese. But I think it would be bad for the breed in general. i bet the Chihuahua show breeders are cringing from the publicity of Beverly Hills Chihuahua,esp since there weren't a lot of dogs that fit the breed standard. The chihuahua breed sure doesn't need that, esp since there are already so many BYB that breed Chi's.

It will be interesting to see what they wind up getting!

Still think a Malt would be great and those girls are at the right age for a maltese and this would be a great thing for rescue groups in general. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a rescue group until recently. I thought all 'second hand' pups came from a shelter.

anyway it will be fun to see what they get! first thing I thought of was potty training in the white house, YIKES!

Unless they get a "maltese" (I say that b/c I'm not entirely sure exactly WHAT is in Ollie's lineage) like my Ollie who is bigger and hardy and athletic (10 lbs) I would think that a malt is a little too delicate for the White House. Remember, it's not just the Obamas, it's continual people coming and going. Just my humble opinion.

I saw on TV the girls want a Yorkie but Obama doesnt like small dogs! Granted it was on E!......

I WAS LISTENING TO WHAT HE SAID "MOST SHELTER DOGS ARE MUTTS" HE PROBABLY REALLY BELIEVES THAT. I THINK IF THE WHITE HOUSE NEW PUP IS A MALTESE RESCUE, THAN IT WOULD BRING MORE ATTENTION TO PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT THINK THERE ARE NOT ANY PURE BREED DOGS IN RESCUES/SHELTERS.
THERE ARE A FEW OF YOU THAT ARE GREAT WRITERS ME NOT INCLUDED BUT HOW ABOUT A REAL WAY FOR US TO GET ATTENTION TO OUR BEAUTIFUL BREED OF DOGS THAN TO HAVE ONE GO STRAIGHT TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

OK so he gets a Maltese, and the whole country falls in love with it, and a whole bunch of people run out and get their own Maltese, I mean everyone wants one, well in about six months there will be a glut of Maltese on the rescue market. When people find out how much goes into having a Maltese, taking care of a Maltese, and house breaking a Maltese its off to NCMR, to find it a new home. As for me I pray everyday that he does not get a Maltese.

On Inauguration Day, all schools will be closed in the DC metro area so I have no school! And being exactly 20 mins away from DC, I might go to the Inauguration and if I do, I will bring my maltese with me![maybe]
