So last Friday wasnt fun, like at all.

Okie, one of the girls in my second period class was talking and she was like "You wont believe what I took from my mom last night" and she pulls out a bottle of pills. Well there's the first no no.
then she talks about how she took one last night and it made her really sleepy, like she tried to do homework then she passed out.
She comments on how it takes like 3 hours for them to kick in, so one of the other girls responds saying she'll just take it with dinner then, it was her 16th bday btw.
So she puts the pills away and then later asks me "Mrs. Crews, whats Zanax for?" I just kinda looked at her and told her to go back to her work.

After class was over I went and talked to the assistant principal and told her what was going on. She said she'd take care of it and called the girls down and got their stories. I talked with both assistant principals at lunch to let them know what was going on.

So I caught up with them later to see what they had decided to do. They had called the first girls father and had him come in. They told him what was going on and apparently backed up his daughters story. He took the pills home, and they're going to let him deal with it. (glad they called the father, the mother would have just let it go.)

So I figured my part in this was all over. I was pretty wrong on that side of things. Two of the girls, the first girl who had the pills and a diff girl, came in demanding to know why I had decided to drag <girl with pills>'s life into public view and to tell me how it was. She claims she had taken the pills so her mother wouldnt because she was a recovering addict. What was wierd was the pills were PRESCRIBED for her mother. About how I had started causing rumors to float around about these three girls popping pills and how they had never done it, (but then of course I've heard them talk about drinking and all kinds of other stuff.. Only one's 16, the others are 15... but the drinking age is 21.)They laid into me for a good 8 or so mins and then left when for the fourth time I reaffirmed that I followed the school policy, that I was doing my job, and that all the other teachers would have done the same thing. I felt like I was a broken record. And so thats where it was left.

I was so stressed out and upset by the end of the day after the girls left I was in tears and afraid to get behind the wheel of the TransAm as mad as I was. Wound up in bed by 8 and asleep by 8:30.

We'll see what happens today. They're part of my class of 7 and they're a really tight group. If three are pissed the other four will probably follow. I'll give them work, keep them busy and see what happens. The asst. principal is ready for me should I need to send kids her way. Lets hope it doesnt come to that though.

Oh, gosh, what a situation to be in. You definitely did the right thing. If they start causing problems for you, perhaps you and they can meet with the assistant principal together and she can further back you up and explain that you were only trying to help, etc.

I can imagine how you must feel .....

I think you did the right thing!
Even as parents, our children will "hate" us for some of the things that we do to protect them. At their age, they simply cannot comprehend the full picture. Taking medication that is not prescribed for you is Dangerous, PERIOD!! You may have very well saved one of those girl's lives yesterday but they cannot see it because they think, like all other young kids, that they are invincible. There have been so many young adults die lately around our area from overdoses, so hold your head high and strong that you did the right thing. Best of luck to you and just be careful. I know "our" children are becoming more and more violent - It's really a shame.

I wish there were more teachers like you. So many of them just want to be the kids friend and not their mentor. Just think how you would have felt if you hadn't said something and the girl overdosed. If my kids were in school now I would want them to have a teacher like you.

Try not to be too upset today. You did the right thing and you followed the proper chain of command. You have not started rumors you only reported your suspecions (sp?) they are kids and will "get over it." You acted as a responsible adult. I wish more teachers were as caring as you.

I haven't even read the other replies yet...as a parent, all I can say is thank goodness for teachers like you. The easy way out would have been to do nothing. You made the right decision. Now, for the girls coming back into your room and talking to you in that manner, well, let's just say in my day that would have added a day to the week long suspension for bringing in drugs. I think you should report the incident (when they came back to confront you) to your boss, and have the school send home a letter to the parents of those students involved. I really think that such disrespect should not be tolerated, period. Those kids have no right to judge you and your decisions. Their actions and words should not go un punished. BTW, I really think that if something like this happened in our school, I would hope the administration would expel the student who brought in the drugs and distributed them to another kid. In case they don't realize it, her actions were against the law! Now I'll read the other replies...sorry, I just get so worked up on things like this.

Wow. Kid's today- I can't believe they came to you to say you were to blame. You and the VP weren't the gossips, so attempting to blame you for spreading this info is absurd. Kids have so much nerve nowadays. It's like no one is teaching them anything about personal responsibility. They know they are not allowed to have any kind of pills at school, so it shouldn't be a shocker that they got in trouble. 15 and 16 is plenty old enough to know right from wrong.

You did the right thing by turning them in, and for sticking to your guns when they came to confront you.

Well as was expected they're really mad. They still hold I shouldnt have done it, but thats why they're the students and I'm the teacher.

The wierd part was the girl who had the pills actually had a semi decent conversation with me after school. Seems if you get her on her own she's not nearly as bitchy as she is around her friends.. Looks like a cool for my friends attitude. Hopefully it all passes...

They claim they're going to have their parents call and "handle" me. They can try, but it wont work.

Oh wow. I can't believe what goes on in schools today. I think you did the right thing. I'm glad you were able to have a one on one talk with the girl today. And as for their parents 'handling you' they can say whatever they want. I'm sure they would rather know now before it's too late. Big pats on the back to you and all the other teachers here. I would never be able to do your job

I still cannot get over the fact that no punishment (other than calling their parents) was given. I checked our school handbook and we have a zero tolerance for drugs (illegal, prescription or even over the counter). Children can take medication, however, even for over the counter it needs to have a doctor's prescription and only the nurse can dispense. Our school takes the "better to be safe than sorry" stand. I am amazed that these girls didn't get at least a suspension. Taking someone's prescription drugs, then distributing them to others is a crime. Boom Boom's Mom...I applaude what you've done, but if I were you, I'd document everything, just in case. I really hope these kids get help and that their parents get help too.

I'm still considering Teaching as a profession and I hope if I do teach there are teachers like you as my colleagues. Its so much better to do whats right, as you did, than to look away and pretend everythings ok. You helped these kids even if they don't realize it, they don't even know they're still kids.

Yeah, I am so proud of you. I wish that there were more teachers like you. The girls just don't know how lucky they are not to have to go to detention or before the judical system. Life doesn't seem fair to teenagers these days hear them tell it.

I have been beating my head against the wall with my teenage son this school year. He has been skipping school and I just got a letter from the school yesterday. Third offense and they just gave him out of school suspension, which is what he wants. I am going to the school on Friday to see what I can have done to get him in school suspension. He also didn't come home last night because he was mad at me for confronting him about it and I grounded him for 2 weeks. I work late nights and my husband told me that he didn't come home from school. I was out until 4:00 am jerking his friends and their parents out of the bed until I found him. When I did I just laid it on the line to him. I didn't send him to school because we had a long discussion about his behavior lately.

When I came home from work tonight he was at home listening to his music. I was very shocked when I walked into his room and you could actually find the floor and no dirty clothes--all washed up and put away. I wasn't afraid to go into a room that looked like a natural disaster this morning and has for months. I found out that sometimes you have to show tough love to kids.

I just plainly told him that if he didn't start acting better, clean up his room and clothes and to quit skipping school that I was going to let a judge handle him because I am just at the end with him. And if I came home tonight and things wasn't done that he no longer was living in my house and I was going to trash everything in the room. He apparently took it to heart and was so proud that he did something great.
