I am planning a trip to the big apple and attempting to select a couple shows for us to see. We have a fourteen year old daughter whom is very intellegent and mature. She has seen many stage productions. We are parents that really consider the content prior to purchasing tickets for a show [or a movie]. We do not allow movies higher than pg13 without our viewing them for content first. Anyway, has anyone seen Chicago on the stage? I am under the impression that the dance might be too sexual for a family show. I know the costumes are very sparse. My daughter has been dancing for over ten years and wants to go for the dance aspect, but I think it's too much. Any comments from the Moms out there???

I would LOVE to see it, but I would think it would be pretty risque (sp?)...but that is just me...

IMHO I think at 14 it'll be perfectly fine for her. My niece goes to a high school for performing arts and last spring the school performed Chicago for their spring musical. Since she had the part of Roxie, I flew down to see the performance. The only times I sort of cringed was when Roxie used strong language and when she was sort of thrown around by her married boyfriend. But those parts lasted only a few seconds.

Of course, I don't know your sensibilities and I imagine the Broadway version is a bit different from the version I saw, but I truly think your daughter would love this show and wouldn't be exposed to anything that would affect her negatively.

I have tickets to see it when the traveling show comes to my town but that's not until January . . .

JMO here but I think if she is 14 and mature then it should be fine for her to see...I have been doing some subbing at the local school here and OMG i am sure it is will be tame compared to what is said and done at school. So I am sure she has been expose to this plus some at school.

I also think she will be more involved with the show than to watch it in a sexual way. but again JMO

Maybe someone will read the post that has been to the broadway show. I am just so worried about the dancing. from the snippets i saw it was a bit much. I'm sure my HUSBAND would love it though!!!

It is a wonderful show. I would not take my 12 year old to see it, and I'm not sure I'd take her until she was 16, but that's just me. On the other hand, is it worse than anything that they see in a PG13 movie...not really. I think maybe you should let your daughter be your guide in this. Will she enjoy it? Will she be uncomfortable during the performance?

As a dancer she would enjoy the dance aspect up to the point where is is tooo provacative. I'll discuss it with her. if it were just she and I, it might be ok. I think she would be uncomfortable with her dad there. That is IF THE dancing is as I think it is. Does that make sense? I confuse myself sometimes

Are you sure it's SHE who will feel uncomfortable with her dad there or is it YOU ? You mention that your daughter is dancing for 10 years. What kind of dancing is she doing ? I didn't see the Broadway show only saw the movie. But if she is in to dancing she will look at it from the art stand point and not the sexual. A lot of times it's us adults who have a dirty mind and not the kids. And if you judge your daughter to be mature at 14 she is old enough to see it. But that's me. And it's YOUR daughter. I also don't think that shielding kids is necessarely a good thing. The more you tell them they cannot watch this or that the more they are going to find ways to do it. But as I said, that's me. You know your daughter best. It's for you to judge and know what's best for her.

I really enjoyed it. I suspect that most 14 year olds have seen worse on TV and movies. I will tell you tho, my 70 something parents (particularly my mom) were fairly appalled. It was too risque for them. But they don't go to movies and they don't watch much TV other than Discovery Channel, History Channel, etc.n They've never even seen Seinfeld.

Well, she dances on pointe, jazz, and tap. She really would enjoy the dance aspect. we have a very open line of communication together and can talk about anything. I gueess I have to go with my gut and say no to this one. My feeling is that just because she is aware of certian aspects of life doesnt mean it is apprpriate for me to place them in front of her. For example she is fully aware of the facts of life, but I don't think she should watch most r rated movies due to content. She should think about kid issues not adult issues. Although i am aware the "kid" issues these days are not as innocent as they used to be. thank you everyone for your in put. I really do appreciate your feedback. There are many other choices on broadway and I'm sure we will have a great time.

PS I think someone asked what shows she HAS seen. These were all great {and kid friendly] except lion King. Didn't like that one.

Chicago is fine and has a wonderful music and dance score. I would have been much more hesitant to take a young girl to Les Mis than to Chicago!!

Kid friendly, great sets, just boring for me. It would be great for the younger kids. I have to say most I know that have gone liked it. It just didn't interest me beyond the mechanics of the animals.

I was given the CD of the music way before I actually saw it and I, too, just love the music from it. I'm not sure if the show is still on tour but maybe it'll come your way. Also, it has been approved for schools to perform and even though it is an abbreviated version, it is still very good. My niece's high school produced it a year or so ago and she had the role of Fantine (I Dreamed A Dream.) So, my brother-in-law surreptitiously taped it and it was very good, so check with the schools in your area . . .

It is a strange comparison, but Les Mis is about war, murder, heartbreak, cruelty and death - don't get me wrong I think it is a super show, but if I was a protective parent I would want to protect my child more from war than from some provocative dancing. Having said that I think introducing all those sorts of topics through a media like the theatre is an excellent idea, and you can discuss the content and any questions it raises with your child afterwards.

Could you get the opportunity to watch the movie quietly on your own and decide from there if you consider the material appropriate?

i took my daughter to NY last Easter just me and her. we saw Chicago and Mama mia she was 15 at that time and also danced for many years she saw the movie and loved the play Would i take her again in a heart beat . We tohave a great relationship and talk about everything. I think the theatre is a great form of art and I did not feel uncomfortable at all watching it with her, she was more interested in the story and the music . Mama Mia is a great one for all ages. I recommend it over Chicago I just liked it better Loved the music.
I too try to protect my children so my advise for you is to go with your gut feeling u know her better than anyone.
