Hello, I have contacted breeders and some are not AKC registered and some are however the prices vary from 2900-5500. Is this normal, they don't seem to be reputable breeders but I am having no luck with breeders in Washington and when I look for a puppy I see more puppy mill sites and other sites that just seem to have puppies on discounts and sales which I don't trust. If anyone knows anyone in Washington or Oregon, please let me know. I checked the AMA and AKC but no luck with getting replies.

Hi,
Go to the website Good Dog. I got my beautiful Lexi from a breeder on that site. I did pa $3,400 but I would pay that again for a puppy like Lexi. She will be 7 months old on the 26th and I love her to pieces. Trust me, this website does their due diligence and only reputable breeders will be there. From all over the country. I'm from NJ and was lucky to find a breeder an hour away. You will not be disappointed. Lexi is AKC with papers.

Rather than rely on a mass market site that can be fodder for puppy mills and irresponsible breeders, please do some research on breeders who are trying to improve the quality of their lines and who are active in showing their dogs. Local dog shows can be a great source of contact for you as can the American Maltese Association and its state affiliates.

I have a puppy that is 10th generation pedigree, both of her parents are registered as well as my Lexi a female Maltese through the Good Dog website, and she is just the most awesome animal that I have ever had, and I don't believe that Good Dog is a mass market site for puppy mills and irresponsible breeders. The breeders have been breeding the Maltese for years and are animal lovers themselves. I was just throwing it out there because I had a wonderful experience through this site. My opinion only.

Who was the specific breeder?

What is the name that she shows under - the name of her kennel/line?
She breeds them to sell. She does not show them and I didn't get my Maltese to show. Why are you asking all of these questions? Are you trying to prove something or make some kind of point? I wanted a Maltese for a pet, I found the website and made a suggestion to the poster.
Go on the site and look her up yourself. If you say the site is what you said you did then I got a bogus registry # , microchip, etc. But, I love my puppy and she is perfect. I would use this site again, and again and I will continue to recommend it as well.

AKC will register a dog as long as paperwork indicates it is purebred. But it does not say anything about the health or temperament or appearance of the dog or its ancestors. Or whether it was born and raised in a good environment. I had a dog with a 5 generation pedigree. But there was only one champion, and that was in the oldest generation. And had a whole lot of health problems over the years. 😢

I think it's a chance regardless of where you get an animal from. It could have health problems and be from a champion line. Just like people in the same family. I could care less is she is from a true champion bloodline. Maybe that's some kind of a status symbol to some but that's not the reason I wanted her. I got some kind of family tree for lack of better words but again I don't care. My vet said she is in perfect health. Life's a crap shoot, that could change but that's life, even for a dog.

Some problems are suspected to be genetically based, like in humans. That is a reason to care about the lines a dog comes from. It is not just a status symbol, it is knowing your dog's background. I am glad to hear your dog is healthy now. Many of us who have been on this forum and have had Maltese for years recommend that people look to get their dogs from American Maltese Association breeders or from ethical rescues for humane reasons.

Breeders who show their dogs tend to be far more knowledgeable and concerned about genetics and long-term health of a pup. For example, a breeder who shows will take much more aggressive action if they start to see NME, liver issues, heart issues, or other genetic and/or predisposed conditions than will a breeder who breeds just to make money. That sort of breeding is less responsible and sometimes called backyard breeders. We want the Maltese breed to remain strong and healthy over future decades and encourage only supporting ethical, responsible "show" breeders who are trying to better their lines.

Sometimes a 'show' breeder will have a pup that may not quite meet show standards (such as an off-bite or too small for standard) and will sell the dog/bitch for a "pet" but they do not "breed just to sell for profit" along w/the reasoning above from Maggie. Showing guarantees dog quality according to standards set by the American Maltese Association----those standards may vary a little from country to country in terms of size, etc. Unfortunately for the buyer a lot of the breeder sites on-line are very professional & polished & it becomes very difficult for someone to tell if they are valid breeders, or brokers who sell FOR puppy mills or hobby breeders who are looking to make $$. A legit breeder will both show & want to protect the integrity of their breeding program by adhering to certain standards. I hope this helps you understand.
