I am hoping to see if anyone has had any experience with Low Glucose in their dogs. Cody has Liver disease. I have been noticing he’s been getting the shivers right before dinner , sometimes when he wakes up in the morning and during the day. It’s happening at least once a day. I texted him and his number one time was at 59… that’s low. After I feed him he’s totally fine and wants to run around and play. I mentioned this to my veterinarian and she told me to give him Wd food mixed with his other dog food to try to stable it. I saw on pet well-being some liquid supplement which I will purchase. But I am wondering how to actually prevent it from happening at all if I could. He has a bad liver so I am assuming right now it’s from that. His last ultrasound should no cancer. But I will be doing another one soon. Has any one experienced this with their dogs liver? Thanks so much !

Sorry Dee but not had dog w/hypoglycemia but I have history of it myself. You can get Nutri-Cal oral gel over the counter to give for ER. It is wise to have him eat regularly timed meals w/protein & a little fat (ask your vet. If he has a "spell" rub a bit of the Nutri-Cal in the roof of the mouth & follow up w/a good meal. I would carry it w/me at all times (on walks, etc). Since Lisi is so small I keep a tube w/us but since she is a good eater I don't have to worry usually. I hope this helps & our little guy gets good advice. Much love to both of you.

Maybe just try more frequent meals. Supplementation might result in more peaks and valleys. Of course do give him something if you see shivers, facial twitches, head bobbles, or collapses. But my idea is to get him past an episode and then rely on a meal of real food.

My experience is limited to one dog. My Janie's great appetite, and eventual seizure-type episodes were signs of low blood sugar which led to the diagnosis of aggressive liver cancer.

Thankyou Sandi I will buy that right now! I think it’s fluctuating it was 59 yesterday and he woke up before dinner shivering and his glucose was 121. Not sure if dogs shiver from the ups and downs ? Thankyou for the advice on protein! So much helps! Cody is Super fussy eater! I wish he was not so picky. He’s sleeping soundly on my lap now snoring. Thanks again! Hope your babies are doing okay too!!! I think about them all the time!!!

Wow Thankyou for that info! Do you think if I gave him the liquid supplement will cause more fluctuations rather then keeping it normal? I used to feed him 3 times a day , now it’s 4 times a day and they’re smaller meals. But it seems every time before he is ready to eat he shivers. As if the meal doesn’t hold him over. I was told to give him carbohydrates food but yet he has liver disease so it’s so hard. Vet wants me to feed him Wd food A meatball size with his other food. To balance the glucose? Have not received it yet. I have been giving him a tad of vanilla ice cream every night before bedtime. Just alittle. I wish I knew more. Cody did have liver cancer in 2020. I pray it’s not back. He soon will be getting another ultrasound will be coming up. Thankyou so much!

Well, I don't know what that supplement is, so asking your vet about these things would be the best idea. I'm just talking from my experience with one dog and from the little I have heard about people with diabetes.

In the meantime, shivering might be excitement, or cold, or maybe low blood sugar. 121 is normal, isn't it? But if you can't test, I would go ahead and give him food or a little bit of the nutrical just in case. There are some videos on youtube about what hypoglycemia episodes look like, but they can be upsetting.

I hope your veterinary team has some good answers and advice for you! {{{{{}}}}}

Thankyou so much ! Never thought of looking on you tube. I will take a look just so I know what could happen. Yes I think 121 is ok but yesterday was 59 so low. I worry about my little guy so very much! Thanks for the info!

Hi Everyone do you believe that I was diagnosed with low glucose too! AND I got more information from my Veterinarian than my doctors! Unbelievable- go figure! 🐾🐾

LOL!
I have vacillated between too low & too high for years (runs in my genetic make up) so I understand. To me low is more uncomfortable than too high---has more symptoms. I hope you have a good endocrinologist & that you can stabilize quickly! Take care of yourself, please!

You are 100 percent right about the low and highs for sure! I actually am not to fond of the endocrinologist and will be looking for another one. She was not helpful at all and said they can’t do anything for me. I will be definitely looking for another doctor I am not happy with that answer. My Cody’s glucose goes down and shivers and I now literally have to feed him every three hours to prevent the shakes. If I wait even an extra hour he awakes and shakes after or while feeding him within 20 minutes he’ll stop. I am going to schedule an ultrasound for him and hopefully nothing is causing this. My veterinarian told me to feed him wd mixed with other dog food .- sometimes it helps not always. mommy like son! Lol!

I hope you can find a good endocrinologist. Can you get a libre or similar system to track and see if there are paterns?

Thankyou Walter! I never heard of that and googled it! I am definitely going to do that!!! The other day I ordered these things that you place in your mouth and supposedly they can tell you your glucose levels but the Libre system is so much better! It literally happens without fail every day after dinner 4 hours after I eat. Thankyou! for some guidance!

There are now multiple brands, they are called continuous glucose monitors. Libre is just the one that advertises the most. It could be covered under insurance if you meet certain criteria.
