I saw these while going through the Maltese collectibles. Old pictures of Malts. I wonder if they were show Malts?
I thought they were cute. The first one shows two Malts w/ brads instead of topknots or piggies. The second one says Champion on it,at Crufts,1934,boy how things change. Follow the link, she has 7 cards, really interesting...
As I look more, many of them say Cahmpion,so I would guess ,by the professional look of the piccies, they were all champions or at least show dogs.

wow that's interesting. they look so different, to be honest, I thought that the two in the first picture really needed some grooming when I first saw them:blush:

There is a facebook group called "Maltese Archives" which has some great old photos - yes I agree though alot of the 'old' maltese look in need of a good grooom.

I wonder though if it's just that nowadays showers/breeders pen up their dogs and take special care on the coats whereas before the dogs were allowed to romp etc and get dirty and were shown in that condition? Or if they allowed the coats to matt/felt deliberately kinda like corded poodles/Puli??

Product and breeding have a lot to do with the coats. Grooming wasn't the same back then. Those were dogs showing at Crufts in England.

I looked at the piccies and though, boy they need a good comb or brush out..... They reminded me of the really poufy pekinese you see at the shows..
Kinda makes them look heavier and squaty like a long haired footstool.

Thankfully advances in product and grooming improved,I can't imagine to time it took back then....takes enough time these days!
