I am taking Kitzi in to my vet next week when she reopens but have been reading all the postings on LP---have had maltese for 39 yrs. and never had a problem w/this. We have been walking Kitzi since he was very small and about a week ago noticed a little skip on the back left side---thought it might be toenails so out came the clippers, but still skipping tonight on our walk.
He has never jumped up or down on anything and is always carried down/up stairs---only the walking and running "fits"---or zoomies! He also stands on his back legs & sort of walks around sometimes when he is being cute. We have marble floors and balconies and wooden floors w/rugs in the other rooms.
He has not yelped or whimpered ever. It doesn't seem to bother him at all.
I am trying to educate myself about LP so that my vet can help us. I don't know if there is a board certified specialist/surgeon here in Athens or not---I will be in the US in Dec.
Anyone who has experience w/LP---what are the dosages of cosaquin/glucosamine? Should the vet do an exray immediately? We are trying to keep him quiet (sure!) and won't walk him until we know more.
Any advice?

That information is here:

OTC Medications

Lady is just under eight pounds and my vet said that 300 mgs is the proper dosage. I use Cosequin for small dogs and cats and she gets one capsule every day.

Thanks sooooo much. Do you open the capsule & put it on her food---otherwise how do you administer it?

Sandi here's a thread where Leslie (Wooflife) posted about Izzy's LP and what Dr. Becker suggested. I hope that helps. http://spoiledmaltese.com/forum/52-maltese-health-behavior/106013-update-izzys-luxating-patelas.html
Where is Dr. Becker? My daughter is at Indiana U. & I will be in Bloomington partly when in US---so perhaps could see her if can't get any satisfaction here (which is probably what will happen!). Thank you again for help. I am feeling very indebted!

Yes, my Crisse takes 1 capsule a day. I sprinkle it atop her dinner.

So she gets 300 mg. per day----what is her weight? What grade is she w/LP? Thank you for this advice---much appreciated!

Thank you again! Great resource. It is almost mid-night here so need to call it a day---will research more tomorrow. I would prefer to see her in person IF it becomes necessary. I still want to start w/my vet here first. I am so happy to have this info. in the event I need advice for my baby. I have grown to love him soooo much in such a short amount of time. Hoping it is nothing serious.
Blessings and love across the miles.

Your welcome. You can call the number that is posted under the phone consultations: (815)929-9393 and press 1 to schedule an appointment, they are closed on Wednesdays. I wish Dr. Becker was in Florida i would love to take my fluffs to her. I understand exactly were your coming from and the love you have for Ktzil i feel the same way about my furbabies and i'm pretty sure that we are not alone in how we feel for these furbabies. I'm sure just about everyone on this forum feels the same way.

Blessings and love to you to Sandi. :hugging:

Oh no, Sandi. Crisse doesn't have a LP. She's my older girl who has arthritis and when I first got her, she never wagged her tail. After 4 years on cosequin, I'm happy to say her tail wags ever so slightly! I was really responding to how to administer the pill.

Lots of good luck wishes are being sent your way.
