Did anyone read this article. I get furious when I read about dogs as the "new IT accessory". I lost it and wrote in to Cosmo. If dogs are this years accessory, what will they be next year? There was a maltese included in the article and it bothered me so much. I've been hearing that Paris Hilton has apparently tossed Tinkerbell aside because she's too big and now has a new little dog to replace her. What is wrong with these people????

Just makes you want to scream at them. And it really is causing normal furbabies to be considered large. Teddy is 6.5 lbs and yesterday someone said he was big...if he is big what in the world is a Great Dane. By the way my response to the person was yes...he is the biggest heart wrapped in a tiny little body I have ever been blessed to call mine.

I am worried all the time at what will become of the little ones once the craze is over....

That is why I get irritated with posts that want to know "how big will my baby be" when the puppy is 3 mos or 4 mos old. You have made the decision, made the committment, have the puppy. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE????????? Presumably you did your homework and know what the standards are, have dealt with a repuatable breeder and know what the "expectation" is, so why are they asking now? If you are interested in showing and breeding you just have to trust your bloodlines and wait and see, if you are owning a malt because you want a "arm candy" you should get a stuffed animal. Do I sound harsh

Great response, Ginny and Susan!

A 6.5 pound Maltese is a perfect size IMO!

The super tiny ones can have so many health issues because they are really dwarfs. Sometimes their organs are too small and they are much more prone to liver shunts. They can dehydrate really fast so even a little tummy upset can quickly become a life and death emergency requiring hospitalization (and a huge vet bill). And unfortunately, many have don't live for more than a few years.

My Lady is over the standard at 9 pounds, but I would rather have her that size than too small. She's still a pretty small dog!

Maltese:

"There is no such thing as a 'teacup Maltese.' Unknowledgeable
breeders use this cutesy phrase as a 'marketing term' for the smallest
Maltese, but in reality, there is only one Maltese breed, ranging from
about 2 pounds up to about 10 pounds.

You do NOT want a Maltese under 3 or 4 pounds, no matter how cute it
is. These individuals are great risks in the health department. Their
bones are fragile, there is not enough room in their mouth for healthy
teeth, and their internal organs are often very weak.

They tend to have lots of health problems and great difficulties
regulating their blood sugar. Often they live a few years and then
their owners wake up one morning and find them dead in their baskets
from sudden heart or other organ failure.

To make matters worse, some breeders actually charge MORE for these
high-risk Maltese. There are breeders on the Internet taking advantage
of naive buyers with prices of $1000, $1500, $2000 for "teacup"
Maltese. Don't be taken! Stick with Maltese who will be 4 pounds and
up at maturity.

My boy is 10 pounds and all the more to love, and boy do I ever love him. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Gizmosmom,

I second that...not a thing in the world I would want to replace that wonderful baby boy of mine.

Yeah. Seriously.

Notice that on packages of food, snacks, treats, MEDICINE, and basically anything else for dogs, it says:

SMALL DOGS (1-25 pounds)

See??!!! SMALL IS UNDER 25 POUNDS!!!

So ALL of our pups are small. And wonderful. And it bothers me when I see those really tiny ones because I just hope they aren't sickly...

Its also aggravating how so many retailers buy into the "teacup" concept

I wont' buy from anyone who advertises clothes or anything else for "teacups"
I wish people would do more research before promoting such a cruel concept.

in cases like this, i highly recommend writing a letter to the magazine's editor. not to tell them how stupid they are, but to educate them and correct them, you know? perhaps the more people who write to them and tell them the distinction between teacups that people drink out of, and teacups that ill-reputed breeders tout...they will take on the responsibility of then educating their readers.

just my two cents on this. anyone have an issue of cosmo who can post addresses (snail mail and email) and names of people at cosmo?

ann marie and the "ha, you think she's long winded HERE...just WAIT til she gets on a letter-writing kick!" buttercup

I also think that this depends on the area you live in. In fashion crazed world of Los Angeles, my 7 lb adult maltese is "big" while here in Nashville (the deep south), people often comment on how "very very small" Miko is. I really don't care -- 7 lbs is often smaller than newborns nowadays so....he is till a small dog

I am infuriated that these pets are merely accessorizing some braindead idiot who cares only about themselves and how they look!!!!!!!!

I got my two malts because someone was breeding for "teacup" pups and my starving my Sweetie and breeding her all at the same time. At one year old, she was only 2.9 lbs. (btw, she is about 6 lbs now, and healthy). She was so small at 2.9 lbs, she could not produce healthy pups, and they became lodged in her birth canal, and she almost died. The pups did die. She, I believe is permanently anemic from almost bleeding to death, and her "spouse" Buddy, whom I have also, is neurotic at times from being so underfed. (he is now 8 lbs plus, and when I got him was 3.3 lbs.) They will eat dirt if given the chance. .....they chew on metal objects (we think because of anemia) and I feed them vitamins just because their little bodies were so depleted as pups, I am afraid NOT to give them vitamins!

I cannot tell you how enraged I become when I see someone USING an innocent creature to their benefit. Anyone who mistreats innocent anything.....children, animals, elderly should have a special place in heck to burn!!!!!

I believe that accessorizing comes under this catagory.
