I took Daezie to the vet on Sat. she was going #2 with blood. they did a stool test and didnt find anything wrong. She gave her medicine for inflamation. She is okay now no more blood. will finish her medication.

What worries me is that Daezie is now 12.16 lbs. I knew Daezie had gain some weight but I didnt think It was this much. Her hair is now 1 1/2 long so she looks really puffy. The vet said she has to loose at least 3lbs ASAP. (i'm a bad mother

how did I let this happen)
She recommended Iams eukabuna(sp?) prescription weight control. and Hills (something I cant remeber the name right now) with more fiber.
both foods the 1st ingridient in corn and then chicken-by-products. I told my vet I dont like Iams for one + I didnt like that the first ingridient is corn and that it has chiken-by-product. Also if the food is high on fiber she will be going #2 more often.
I told her I will do my research and find her a weight control food.

I would have to keep Daezie on food different than Maya and Luna which she already has her own senior food

Right now Daezie and Maya are eating "Spot Stew for Dogs" Do you guys have any suggestions on which brand of food that is for weight control, other than what the vet prescribed? which, by the way that's all they carry at her office.

Since Sat I cut Daezie's food portion and treats. she is only allowed apples and carrots and may be peanut butter but that's it. And we will be exercising more.

Were you free-feeding?
Maybe just portioning out the right amount of food and gradually getting to a little less will help without having to go on a weight control food.
I know I had Brink on the senior formula of Chicken Soup b/c they were out of regular adult. It had less calories/fat stuff. LadyMontava helped me figure out how much Brink should eat when I gave her his weight and all the numeric stuff from the bag. Maybe she can help you.

Miko also needs to loose about .5-1 lb according to the vet. I normally watch his food but lately I have been giving him treats out of control and now we can't even feel his ribs all that well!!! Even though he is only a little bit over 7 lbs, he is just apprently bigger than he should be for his frame

We use Natural Balance reduced calorie food and Miko really, really likes it (more than any dry food he has ever been on). I think the ingredients are better than in Iams or other reduced calorie foods. I guess its also important to cut out the treats (and I feel like a hypocrite when I say this cause I am guilty of it).

No, I dont free feed them for the reason that Daezie is never full she just wants to eat and would eat Maya and Luna's food.

Is free feeding a bad idea? I’m assuming that means just leaving the food out all day.
The reason I ask is b/c I do it, and I don't find that Tucker eats more than he did when I first brought him home. Well that's an exaggeration...he does. But I always put a hand full of food in his bowl. Sometimes it’s empty in the morning but most of the time it's not.
If I'm doing something please tell me. I don't want to hurt the baby.

if u need help finding the kcal of ur food let me know..or u can tell me what the bag/can says about kcal and i can help u out.

also ...this number is the kcal/day total...including treats...so if u give treats u HAVE to subtract the food, otherwise the weight wont come off.

I think that if the dog is meant to be smaller, than they should lose weight, but if the dog is naturally that size, dont worry about it.

Forgive me for dragging out my soapbox, but here goes!

Please, please, if your vet says that Daezie needs to lose weight, listen to him. Just like with people, obesity is one of the #1 causes of diabetes. My Lady ballooned up to 11&1/2 pounds after I adopted her and became diabetic. She is now at her ideal weight of 9 pounds. Being 2&1/2 pounds overweight is a huge amount of extra weight to be carrying around, nearly a third of her ideal weight. Terry's Missy also became diabetic from obesity.

Greens beans are Lady's secret weapon, too. I put them in her Busy Buddy Twist and Treat and she loves them!

As for Harley, he may be at his ideal weight at 12 pounds. There are a lot of giant-sized Maltese out there who've had Bichon slipped into the lines and/or are bred by BYB's who don't bred to the standard and want to breed from larger dogs (more puppies, less difficult deliveries=more $$$$) They can be at their perfect weight at 12 pounds or more.

Your vet can tell if a dog is overweight or just large.

If I give him scaps to lick off a plate (NO lectures!

), he will lick all AROUND the green beans.

If they are french cut, and he accidently gets a sliver of one...you can see him try to spit them out! It is SO funny!!!!!!

The plate will be spotless when he is finished....except for the greenbeans!

I don't think it is a bad idea, but it depends on your puppy. My Teddy is not a gobbler...while other dogs will eat anything in site so leaving food down all the time is not good for them. Teddy will leave food when he is full...even if it is homemade...I can make him fresh lamb and if he is full he is not eating it. Others would scarf it up and make themselves sick.

So, personal observation is a must. Does your littleTucker walk away from food or have to finish it all.

Tlunn,

Teddy does not go gaga over green beans either...he does eat them but only if done in the dish....but Asparagus....that is a whole new thing....he will do anything for asparagus...and that is just as good for losing as the green beans.. My daughters dog....loves zuchinni and comes running....so it depends on there taste buds...just like ours.

Try different items to see if Brinkly likes any kind of low cal veggie. Also there are low cal fruits as well....but the sugar sometimes has more calories so you need to watch more.

I get the frozen cut green beans and either run water over them to defrost or let them sit out for a bit. I then cut them in half so they can fall out easily in Lady's Twist and Treat. She will choose a green bean over a piece of dehydrated chicken if you can believe that!

Wally, our Beagle, needed to lose weight. He weighted 42lbs and the vet said it REALLY needed to come off. So instead of cutting down on his food, we just walked him two to three times a day. He eats 0.5 cup of food twice a day and a little less than a year later he now weights 27lbs. That is a 15 lbs difference!

So I just want to let you know that it can be done!

I give Chloe the canned green beans with no salt added. She will do ANYTHING for a green bean. She has always loved them.
