Dr. Harvey's Veg-to-Bowl

Thoughts on this product? We are looking to possibly change up Hunter's food and we have tried Stella and Chewy's little freeze dried patties but DH isn't keen on what they look like (though Hunter seemed to like them).

We did home cooking for a while but it got to be overwhelming for me (hubby is vegan and doesn't prepare meats) so I have been looking for other options.

So, here are my questions.

1. Could I use this as a suppliment to his kibble instead of a sheer replacement.

2. What types of proteins are people using with this?

3. If you are using this, what type of preparation do you do? (their website says it is good in the fridge for 3 days or can be prepared and frozen).

4. How messy is it when eaten?

5. What do you do when you travel?

Thanks everyone!

I'm feeding Maggie and Abbie Grandma Lucy's Artisan Lamb Dehydrated and Dr. Harvey's Veg-To-Bowl. My girls like both foods and are doing fantastic on both.

I believe it could, but I bet Crystal will know for sure.

2. What types of proteins are people using with this?
We are currently using lamb. Just wanted to add that you are suppose add oil, too.

3. If you are using this, what type of preparation do you do? (their website says it is good in the fridge for 3 days or can be prepared and frozen).
I make a few days worth at a time and heat a portion up and the rest is refridgerated

4. How messy is it when eaten?
I usually hand feed a bit at a time or use a baby spoon, but it doesn't seem that messy.

5. What do you do when you travel?
I haven't traveled, yet while feeding Veg-To-Bowl.

I hope that helps. :)

Hi Erin - this is just what I would do.

I would not use it as a supplement to kibble as there really wouldn't be much benefit aand it would be an expensive alternative to a multivitamin. Best to use real meat.

I usually use ground meat - boil it just enough to cook through - drain it and then mix in water and Dr. Harvey's. I have used lamb, beef, chicken, turkey, pork, and chicken livers, hearts and gizzards. The hubs scored some venison off a relative so we might be trying that soon. If the meat is not ground I put it in the food processor before mixing it with the water and the pre-mix. It takes me about 20 minutes to make enough food for 3 dogs for about 8 days. I freeze and refrigerate it in batches.

When you mix Dr. Harvey's put the water and the dry mix into the cooked meat in a batch rather than making fresh at every meal or it will be watery. The food is not messy when it's not really watery.

For travel I either bring a cooler and use the fridge wherever I'm going. Or if I'm visiting someone I bring the pre-mix dry and cook some meat when I get there. In a pinch you could order a broiled chicken breast in a resaurant and then cut into really small peices and mix up a batch in a hotel. Same with a steak or fish etc.

1. Could I use this as a suppliment to his kibble instead of a sheer replacement.

With the added protein, it makes a complete meal. Without the added protein, you would be feeding vitamins twice - once from the kibble, and once from the veg-to-bowl. It might be too many vitamins/minerals.

2. What types of proteins are people using with this?

I have used chicken so far. I bake a bunch of organic boneless chicken breasts/thighs (covered) on a cookie sheet in the oven, then let cool and chop.

3. If you are using this, what type of preparation do you do? (their website says it is good in the fridge for 3 days or can be prepared and frozen).

I make one day's batch in the evening, which I use for Nikki's dinner and the following day's breakfast.

4. How messy is it when eaten?

Not messy at all.

5. What do you do when you travel?

I haven't used it for travel, but I might consider using canned salmon or canned organic chicken for the protein when traveling.

FYI: I have to let it rehydrate for the full 10 minutes or even a little more, as the peas take a long time to soften. Hope this helps.

We are using Dr. H. Crystal was my mentor during the transition. Actually Crystal is my mentor for pretty much all things maltese related LOL.

I'm not using the veg to bowl. We are using the Canine Health....but I think it'll be the same guidelines.

I rotate the protein with the following: frozen wild salmon, ground grass fed beef, organic chicken, ground turkey. I make enough to last us at least 5 days. Crystal gave me a great ratio to cook the chicken in the crock pot. That batch lasts me close to a week. I still have the email w/the ratios if you want it.

Oils I rotate with flax, olive, coconut, sesame oils. I add oil to one meal a day along w/probiotics.

This will my first time traveling w/Dr. H so I ordered Grandma Lucy's freeze dried chicken from Crystal. I have a backup of Orijen kibble to bring with me just in case Emma turns her nose up to the freeze dried chicken. But I'm thinking she'll be fine w/the Grandma Lucy's when I add it in.

It's not messy for Benny b/c his hair is shorter but Emma's face is really long so she tends to wear her meal ;) I don't think you'll have a problem w/Hunter's face getting messy b/c he is about the same facial length as Ben.
