A good starting step recommendation by Dr. Jean Dodds on being prepared in an emergency:

When we lived for 15 yrs. in Greece I always had an ER quick evacuation bag for my dogs (and for myself & DH)---due to wildfires & severe earthquakes---both of which we lived through. I kept these by our front door so I could grab it quickly. It was also a constant reminder to keep medications, food, & extra articles of clothing, etc. up-dated. Since moving back to the US I have slipped up on this habit just keeping water, leashes, collars w/name tags, etc. in my walk in closet which we use as a tornado closet. Dr. D reminded me that I need to prepare a new bag for our two that hopefully I will never need. A word to the wise. . . (is usually ignored ;)
