After finally feeling better, Miko is now having 2 other minor problems. I would realy appreciate any and all advice.

1) He is having more eye discharge, sort of "eye boogers" type of thing and he has some pinkness at the corner of his eyes (on the skin). Plus he is rubbing his eyes a lot. I just don't know if its eye infection vs maybe ingrown hair on eyelid (which was suggested by vet intern to us). Is there a way to tell

2) He is peeing and drinking a LOT. I just recently gave him a bully stick. Could the increased thirst be caused by the bully stick? Or is he just bored in his playpen and since the water is there he just drinks it all the time?

I guess I probably need to take him to a vet but I just hate traumatizing him.

Is he still on antibotics? I know they can cause an increase in water.

Miko might have a little conjunctivitis in his eye. Lady gets this periodically from her allergies and it clears up with Terramycin eye ointment. I think you can even get that at Petsmart.

Excessive drinking and peeing can be more serious. It can indicate a urinary tract infection, or worse case scenario, diabetes like my Lady has. Either way, it's best to get it checked out asap by your vet. Many vets will let you drop off a urine sample, so you wouldn't even have to stress him out with a trip the vet's unless your vet wants to see him. UTI's can be pretty uncomfortable so I wouldn't wait.

Most likely it isn't diabetes, but that is another reason to get it checked out asap. Time is of the essence when diagnosing and starting treatment for diabetes. As I say, don't panic because Miko is a young dog, right? Diabetes usually occurs in older dogs although there are cases of juvenile diabetes.

Both issues should be checked by the vet. Your vet will probably want to stain the eye to rule out an ulcer so that you can use an ointment with a steroid if the eye is really red. If it continues to be a problem long-term, you should see a veterinary ophthalmologist. They can see fine hairs and small problems that your regular vet may not notice.

My first thought would be a uti, but dogs definately will drink more when they've got a chewie.

Okay, we took Miko to a vet and she does think he probably has a UTI. I am so proud of my diagnosis. She thinks its from him holding in his pee for 36 hrs at a time for a week straight. So now he has to take antibiotics for a while but she did culture his urine and do a urinalysis. His eyes are okay though!! Yeah!!

hehehe I have my vet's home and cell phone numbers! I'm so bad...when Mikey stays in CritiCare I tell them to call his vet first and then call me to let me know what they decided to do. Mikey's regular vet was telling me how much fun I'll have with a 4th year vet student when we go to Cornell. I'm use to being handed interns to explain treatments for IBD, MVD, and liver shunts. Mikey's holistic vet works at the specialty practice and brings me the interns. One of the vets who now works at our practice was an intern there, and I had her in one of my groups last year!
