Hi everyone. I know there are other tears stains posts out here but not quite like this one. My Abbie was tear stain free for almost 12 months. Not suddenly last week one of her eyes started staining really badly!! She has the same food, and drinks filtered water as she always has. I haven鈥檛 hanged anything in her diet or care! Why has she suddenly developed tear stains if never had them before??? 馃槱馃槱馃槱

Yes, those tear stains can be rather troublesome and many of our little Malts have had them one time or another. Not sure what food that she is being fed and that might be a cause??? Also, has she had her teeth checked lately??? For our Chrissy, that was an issue and it was cleared up after intense dental work.

As I'm sure you know by now - There is not one sure answer to the cause of tear staining. Every case is different and has a different cause/solution. I know how very frustrating it can be. Each of us here on SM can only share what has worked for them - and have many very good recommendations. I tried hundreds of different things that were recommended to me or that I read on reliable internet sites - Finally I found the right combination for Abella. Sorry I can't be more encouraging. Looking at Abbies picture I notice that her beard/mustache are stained. I'm wondering if this is from being wet? Definitely need to keep her little face dry at all times.

Yes, it was wet because I was just dabbing her face with tear stain remover.

I had a good read online and they all say it is mainly caused by excess toxins from the liver, so it鈥檚 whatever she digested.
We haven鈥檛 changed her food since we got her so this isn鈥檛 the cause. But... it could be the antibiotics she was taking a few weeks ago!! Nothing else I could think off.
Thank you all for the replies. I hope it clears soon 馃槥

I鈥檝e been dealing with tear stains for awhile now and I鈥檓 finally making some progress. My babies face is looking so much whiter and the only changed I made was to his probiotic. After someone commented here about their veterinarian recommending it I started using Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets FortiFlora Probiotic Gastrointestinal Support Dog Supplement. I鈥檝e been using it for almost 3 months now and it seems to be working.

A couple of things come to my mind from my own experience. When one of my girls started tearing at 17 months old after always having a clear face, I thought her tear ducts were clogged, so had them flushed. Tearing continued, so I thought it was her tooth she broke, it wasn鈥檛.
For my girl, she ended up getting a auto immune disease and I believe it was the the rabies shot at one year, because looking back, she started having random issues, until she was DX at two years.
So, once you rule out food, water, eyes, teeth, I would want a workup to see if something else is going on.
