Today I found fleas (2) on Belle with eggs in her hair. The vet has said that she shouldn't have a problem with fleas before 1 year of age but gave me Sentinel to give her monthly since I was concerned. I'm thinking that since she will soon be one year and fleas are so bad this year that she may need something stronger. Does anyone here give their little ones K9 Advantage Plus for flea control? I am calling the vet tomorrow to see if it is her liver shunt problem that keeps him from putting her on something stronger but am curious of what others are using. Thanks for any input. ~ Jackie

Thanks Lady Montana & Lexi's Mom. I will get her one of the two tomorrow. I also would love to have a pill on hand just in case she should get another flea or two. My husband thinks I am over-reacting but I just can't deal with her having a flea or fleas. She is bathed and I don't see any eggs anymore but I want to stay on top of it. I must admit that I had started potty training her all over again from the wee wee pad to going outdoors and now the fleas. I would still like to get her to potty outside. She does fine with the wee wee pad but if I take my eyes off her for just a second she will squat and go on the carpet. My friend says that is because the wee wee pad is soft and so is the carpet so she doesn't know the difference. She is very smart and goes 12 hours at night. I think she knows and is just being a pill. Do you have any thoughts on the retraining to go potty outside. Have I possibly waited too long. She will be 1 on August 5th. Thanks again for any thoughts. ~ Jackie

Spray your yard and garden with Beneficial Nematodes to kill the larva and stop the flea production cycle. You can get them at garden stores. They are refrigerated and are released into water to make a solution to spray into your soil. They burrow into and eat any larva in your soil, including grubs and fleas.

Plus they are all natural, organic and cannot harm your pets or other insects which may be beneficial to your environment.

If you don't treat your yard she will get fleas all over again. Sentinel is strong enough. When the flea bites your dog Sentinel will kill it. When there are lots of fleas you can combine with Advantage who is topical. But if you don't treat the environment you are never going to get rid of the fleas. If I see ONE flea on Alex, the yard is treated. I almost never have to put something on Alex. That one flea I kill with my nails.

I got my Sentinel from my Vet for Belle. It is a once a month flavored tablet that Belle just chews up. It is recommended for dogs & puppies 2-10 lbs of weight. I do think it works or Belle would have more fleas. I just get psycho when I see a flea on her or think anything is bothering/hurting her. I haven't taken her for a walk since I bathed her yesterday not wanting to see another flea. I am going way overboard.

HA,HA ,

I don't think so... I did the same thing. I would not let chelsy outside again... for weeks I'm still worried even though now the flea's are gone... for some reason she got them so much worst then chester.. we have lived her 5 years this year and noflea issues. I don't know why they love her so much. She starts begging to go out when she see's chester going out , but I just don't want her to get bitten up again. They were all over her... I was so mad and frustrated when I called the vet ,she got them the second time.
I could not even give her a bath for three days until the revolution worked and those thing were on her... I was sooo upset and thinking there biting her.

So far they are both ok now... but yeah i only let her go out for like 5 min... before they would play out there for 20 min... but I'm soo scared too. I don't blame you for feeling the way you do...

Sentinel is a heartworm and flea preventative. You get it from your vet. To spray your yard you have to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a spray specifically geared to killing fleas. I don't know the product Pico's parent is talking about but if she used it and it works it's worth a try.

Well, I haven't gotten brave enough to let Belle on the ground yet. I carry her which is not nearly the same as walking her. Maybe by this evening I can force myself to - no, I don't want to think of fleas before bedtime so it will have to be tomorrow. She is getting tired of being carried everywhere and I am getting tired holding her. My daughter tells me I am psyho and my son just laughs and says stop! you are killing me. They are right I know logically but I am still fighting this demon. I don't know why God put fleas here, I'm sure they have a function even if it is to test us. ~ Jackie

And if you're like me, as soon as Chelsey comes back in she gets a going over looking for the little beasts!
Do fleas serve any purpose other than an annoyance?  Of all the creatures in the world, fleas rank right at the top of my useless list!

Don't you know it. I check her everytime. The Sad thing is when I work from home . I would bring them upstairs with me. They would watch TV while I worked. They are not allowed upstairs unless we bring them up with us. Now the bedroom is completly of limits. I mean fles in the bastment is one thing but NOT my Bed room...

Yeah I hate those things. from now on i will spray them with the lavender mist before they go out. I'm glad I'm not the only one that wants to keep them inside.

Sentinel does not kill fleas. It interupts their life cycle, halting their reproduction. Advantage or Frontline are my choices for killing fleas. We usually give a Capstar, have them bath the pet in normal shampoo (not flea shampoo), wait a day, and apply the topical. You also have to treat the environment.

Hi Jackie! I was hoping you would jump in and give us your wisdom. Oh dear, I did not mean that all of you have not been kind and helpful. I just meant that some are a tad more knowledgeable than we are because of their profession, etc. I do also value all of you and your personal experiences!
I did not use flea shampoo on Belle yesterday (only because I did not have any thankfully). So if I understand you right Jackie I should get the Advantage/Frontline today not wait until tomorrow. I will be off soon to pick some up even though it is rush hour. As for treating the environment I agree with you and am working on getting my husband to help me do this. As of right now, he thinks it sounds like way too much work and it won't be that effective. He is getting tired of hearing about fleas so I suspect it won't be but a day or two before we start doing the environment. I can be relentless. Soon he would rather treat the environment than hear about the fleas. :D
P.S. Chelsey. It is rather nice to have someone else going through what you are and feeling the same way. Does this mean I am not a pyscho?

If your pyscho then so am I
. We spent the whole weekend last week cleaning... vacuming , doining the landry we just did because we left it downstairs insted of putting it awy... I did not want to take any chances. I also got some home treatment from the vet that you spray on the rugs and fruniture and corners of the floors after you have bleach and vacumed everything. I think those things are gone... and I don't see any on our puppies. We also put the flea' coller in the vacume... We washed all the beddings and puppys toys and blankets. The only place not treated is outside... I have to get those nanonode things. for the yard..mentioned above.
I think the revolutions is working... and I hope they never ever come back.

oh P.S the vet told me that fleas don't like people.. They may bite you but they will not stay on you.... they prefer our pets.

We use Frontline, Advantage didn't work for use. Puddles got the worse case of fleas last summer and we were using Advantage monthly. Had to wash him in flea shampoo for several weeks to get them under control. Now with Frontline, we have no problems and never have treated our yard.

Good luck !

P.S. now that I have said this, watch us get fleas

Oh Great, now that I drove in commute traffic to the Vet's and got Advantage because they said it was much better than Frontline you tell us this about Puddles. Just kidding  We did go in the commute traffic and get Advantage and Belle now has it on her, but I refuse to keep going around the block on this whole flea thing. Worse case scenario is if it doesn't work we will find something that wil work or poor Belle will never go on another walk. Ha! I think she would rather have a flea or two than be carried around much longer.

As for Chelsey, my hat is off to you! If I could not bathe Belle immediately and had to wait, I think I would go nuts. My husband says no, you would deal with it but just the thought is yuk! I feel so sorry for any of you that have had to deal with flea infestation on your baby. Well I think we have killed this subject for now anyway. Thanks to all of you and best wishes for all of us that fleas will be no more in our lives after we treat our environment. At least, not until next season. ~ Jackie & Puzzled Belle

well i have better luck with advantage then frontline...i think it depends on the area you are in. so it is good that u went with what the vet recommended b/c that is prob what is best for your area. one of the vet students here came from another state and frontline was all she was used to and it worked great for her dog, then she moved down here and found her dog to have a flea allergy and the frontline wasnt enough. but the good thing about advantage is you can use it for more than once a month if u are still seeing fleas
