I wash Wally and Toby's food and water bowl every other day and give them fresh water. Yesterday as I was washing them out, I sniffed the inside of a cleaned bowl; the stench that came from the bowl was enough to make me gag!

I have been using these cute little ceramic bowls that I got from Target. I know that ceramic isn't the best choice, but I thought by washing them so frequently I was reducing the chance of odor and bacteria--I guess not. I ended up soaking the bowls in a bleach and water solution and this weekend I am going to buy some stainless ones. Does anyone know where I can get some cute stainless steel bowls? I love the bowls that I have now because they are beige with blue paw prints and match my kitchen. I hate the look of the stainless steel--it looks so surgical.

I use stainless bowls for Sassy but if you really like the ones that match your kitchen why not consider using a stainless bowl inside the ceramic....like a liner. That might work.

I just got 2 of these bowls from KV Vet and love them. In fact I'm going to get more the next time I order from them. Since I'm doing home cooked meals I need to wash the bowls after every meal. I love these ones because they are heavy duty and have the rubber around the buttom but you don't have to remove it when you wash the bowl.

They are $4.79 for the 20oz. on KV Vet. I've seen them at PetSmart and they were more.

I agree about the stainless bowls being very surgical looking. I have this one in blue from PetSmart and its about the best I have found. It's got paw prints embossed on it:

I used to use the stainless steel ones from Petsmart. Although not all that cute, they worked well for us.

I have a small question. How often do you all change water/wash the water bowl? I do it once a day on most days but sometimes I forget and skip a day. Is that bad?

I wash the bowls every other day. I know you are supposed to do it every day, but I usually forget. So they get fresh water every two days. I haven't noticed any major problems with Wally or Toby as far as bad breath or anything.

I always see cute stainless steel bowls in Manhattan. But they're pricey. I use a double set I got from Petco for $8, helps keep the dishes in place, since my guys would push it around and cause a mess if they weren't anchored down a bit.

I change the water bowl several times a day, before breakfast and again before dinner. Spoiled Miss Lady will actually bark at it if it's not fresh or heaven help us, has a little piece of something in it!

I wash it every couple of days.

I change and clean Bella's bowls everyday, but that's mostly because Bella loves cold water, and she seems so happy when i put cold water down for her.
Yeah, some dog bowls just aren't pretty, I've been thinking of some glass bowls from www.josherwooddesign.com
They're really pretty, but I don't know if they would be as easy to keep clean as stainless.

Hope this pic works, my problem with bowls was only that anything too lightweight would be dumped out by Wally and the bowl chewed. I fixed the problem by putting a tub of water outdoors (I use ceramic indoors) soooooo....here is my new problem!

I received a small crystal dish as a gift. It's a small dish with a pedestal that is tall but not too tall for a Maltese. So I thought to try it out for food. I scrub it after 2 meals with just a paper napkin under hot water and it's clean.

Here's what it looks like, but this is not the EXACT unit:

For water, I bought the water fountain thing and it's GREAT. I give distilled water and there is no problem with staining.

Most of the time the water doesn't make it more then a day. I refill it as need be. Every couple of days I put a new bowl out and wash the old bowl.
