What an excellent article! This is so true of so many little ones. I judged a doggie costume contest this weekend and observed from my table that NOBODY really handled greetings respectfully. I'm talking human-dog as well as dog-dog. In one case a dog was out at the end of his leash being aggressive, owner ignored and kept letting him pull closer. The one he was approaching was sitting in a basket but was trying to run away out of fear.
Numerous times, kids and adults approached dogs in the way the article describes. Most dogs were frightened (remember, everybody was in costume). Mine was with me, so there was a slight buffer for her, but she was trembling.
Our customers run up to Piper and reach, grab, sometimes pickup/drop her..... we keep talking about what to do but short of locking her up there is no perfect solution.
