A friend at work has a Yorkie (4 lbs). She was fixed 2 weeks ago and has problems ever since. Today she called and said that Lexie had a bowel obstruction and was at the ER vet. The price was $1600 for surgery and she didn't have the money but they were trying to figure out what they could do for her.

Tonight she called back and said they would not do the surgery without payment, she had told them she didn't have the funds. She said they were thinking of putting her to sleep.

Hubbys said she called thinking I could help her out with the money. I think she called to let me know Lexie was sick and she would be late for work. Now I am feeling some guilt that I didn't offer to lend her the funds, but was told to stay out of this decision. But I sure hate to see this darling little one be put down.

Don't know really what to do.

Sounds like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place

I wish I had some advice to give you, but I wouldn't know what to do.... I hope everything works out for the best for everyone involved

Could she put the charge on a charge card? Any family members who could help.
maybe if she could put down a considerable "deposit' with promise to pay 'X" amount per week/month?
there are orginazitions that often help those who qualify but this sounds like an emergency situation the 'paperwork" would likely take too long.
Oh this is so sad! Does this gal have a house.. maybe get a loan?
I think if the vet feel she has a resource available in the near future, they might work something out?
I have a hard time with situations like this. I know vets cannot constantly do 'freebies".. but when they are dealing with a little life that is endangered.. I can't understand how they could just 'ignore" the pooch.
I am praying something good will come out of this. it breaks my heart

Is this a close friend, or a work friend? If she was a close friend, I think you would have sensed what she was wanting. Sorry you're put in the position to feel guilty. You shouldn't. It's a shame about her Yorkie, but it would sure be a lot to ask of someone. Good luck with this.

that really sucks about her yorkie. but you souldnt feel bad because if she really wanted to---she would've just asked.

i hope she doesnt have to put her yorkie to sleep though.
and what caused the obstruction?

That is awful! Do vets not have the same "rule" that human docs have? My husband is bound to do whatever is necessary to get someone out of pain, though he doesn't have to perform elective surgery. I totally (I mean TOTALLY) understand that he has to be paid for his work, but how can they ethically allow an animal that has been healthy to die when surgery could save them? And is this the same vet that did the spay/neuter? How do they know that this wasn't a complication of that surgery? I'm really upset by this....

I went throught the exact same thing with my dobe on the 23rd of April (his birthday) The vets don't have to do a damned thing without payment-animals are property. (I know they're the ones who own us) Miques surgery cost me over 5K. My regular vet accepts payments-this vet didn't-soft tissue specialist/surgeon.

I think that if a vet doesn;t allow a payment plan, it really sucks-what if it was a child? Well, it feels the same as a child!!!

I don't know if that's absolutely true. If I needed money, I wouldn't even ask the bestest of friends. I'm too "proud" as my family calls it. If someone were to offer I'd still probably put it off until I could find no other means. However if someone had told me they were in that situation, it would be in my nature to offer the money...if I was able to, that is. I don't think her friend would have brought it up otherwise.... ?

The Yorkie is still hanging in here. She picked her up this moring at the ER vet ($885) and took her to her vet this morning.

I think shes going to have surgery today and her vet is going to work out some type of deal.

This is a girl that works for me and I don't think I can help her out cause I have other employees that have hard times as well. But the poor puppy

I'm glad the vet is willing to work with her. I just re-read my post, and it kinda looks like I'm telling you to lend the money. That's not what I meant it to come out like. What I meant to say is that sometimes people ASK without asking directly. I didn't realize she was someone working for you either. You obvioulsy care because you posted the situation here. I hope everything works out.
