Glucosamine... how much to give, what type, how often?

1478 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  harrysmom
Hi everyone,

Both Benny and my black lab Max have been limping a little.
The vet prescribed nsaids and said try them for a week.
I can't find the bottle, so I don't know exactly what he
prescribed, but whatever it was, it didn't help at
all. So, I decided to try giving glucosamine. I was wondering
if there is one supplement (brand) that is better than another?
Also, how often should the supplement be given and are there any
side effects or issues that I should know about?

Thanks.

I use Dasuquin. I give the little ones the capsules for cats (I open then and sprinkle on food) and use the chewable tabs or bonelets for bigger dogs.
I use ENP's Glucosimine Plus for Delilah ENP - Dog Glucosmine Plus - Effective Natural Products I ordered a quart size off Amazon. I just put about 1/2 teaspoon in with her wet food. I have slacked on it, because for the past week or so she has been eating exclusively dry. I may have to start giving her a little wet food again, so I can mix it.
Hi Deb,
My Crisse takes Cosequin. It helps her immensely. Crisse has been taking 1 capsule daily also sprinkled over food, for about 4 years now. Each capsule contains:
250mg glucosamine hydrochloride minimum
200mg sodium chondroitin sulfate minimum
2mg manganese minimum

dogs under 10lbs-1/2 to 1 capsule daily
10-25lbs-2 capsules daily

I am probably going to buy Cosequin, unless I come across something better in my research. The vet said Nikki's back knee is a little "soft."
I use Triple Strength Joint Max; 1/8 teaspoon in the morning and 1/8 teaspoon at night. The recommended dose for my size pups is 1/2 teaspoon a day. They are doing great on it. It comes in large tabs but I use my coffee bean grinder and grind the pills up into a powder and add it to the meals (I home cook so it is easy to mix in).
I use Cosequin for Lady. She was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis when she was only eight years old. Her vet took xrays of her entire body and said she had the skeletal system of an elderly dog. She was so crippled I had to walk her in a sling.

She was on steroids for two years, but developed Cushings from it so I had to wean her off it. I had been using Glycoflex the whole time, but really didn't see a difference. I put her on Cosequin after I took her off steriods and the results have been amazing. You wouldn't know she even had arthritis!

Ok I understand that you give glucosamine or cosequin when a dog has a problem with joints. But why would you give glucosamine to a pup like Delilah who does not have a problem ? If I am not mistaken, Delilah is still a puppy.
Thanks for all your input. I ordered some and will try it. I'll
let you know if it makes a difference in my boys. I really hope
it does!!!
