Help with retiree, potty training

I need help from anyone who has a fluff that has been trained to go on potty pads and was retrained to go potty outside on the grass. I have a 2 1/2 yr retiree that just came into my life over the weekend who has never been on the grass. He is new to me and I understand there is a transition time so I am not fussing at him for his mistakes, I just don't know how to get him interested in the grass. I have 2 other dogs who go outside to do their business. PLEASE HELP

Congrats on your new fluff! I think it will help that your other dogs go potty outside...I think that, in time, will encourage him to go too and you can just treat him like crazy when he does! Other ideas are to take his potty pad outside and put it on the grass and when he starts using it, gradually make the pad smaller until he is going on the grass. And you could also put a little patch of sod next to his potty pad indoors...then maybe with the pad on top of the sod and gradually make it smaller until he is using the grass. When you "catch him in the act" on his puppy pad indoors, say "Go Potty" until he connects the words to the action and knows exactly what that means...then you can tell him to "Go Potty" outdoors and he'll know what it is that you want him to do. Good luck!
When I got my Quincy he was abt 4 yrs old and had been 100% pee pad trained. This was my first experience with a 'pee-pad-trained' pooch. I thought having Naddie ( an outside trained pooch).. would be a big help in transitioning him to outside potty. I tried all advise and to be honest.. nothing would change that little guys habits. He'd 'hold' forever before going anywhere but on his pad. he doesn't even attempt to mark outside.
Granted he is excellent abt using the pad...no matter what, he'll not go anywhere but on that pad, so I said what the heck... he's so good why not just go with it. Even have to admit in mid winter it's sort of a pleasure to not have to worry about getting TWO of them pottied in the middle of a snowstorm or freezing temps.

I get the pads from Petedge.com

I hope you have success and know I haven't been much help nor very encouraging .. however I do think most have been able to conquer this obstacle.

I wasn't able to retrain Hannah(retiree) to outside potty. I tried,& she will go potty outside sometimes,if she's outside long enough & can't hold it any longer. But she's mostly dedicated to her pottypad,so in order not to confuse her,I let her keep the pottypads. Funny thing, Boo,my male is outdoor trained since puppyhood, but he learned to use Hannahs pad if he needs to. So he's now trained to both pads & outside for pee,but he will only poo outside. Good luck
When I got Summer she was 2 yrs and 4 months and I have had no success with her going outside to potty...tried but she just wont. Chloe is pad trained as well but will go outside if I am out and I really would like Summer to do the same so she doesn't have to hold it in if we are out...you would think she would catch on watching Chloe but she would rather wait until we get home...I will keep trying though.

First of all, CONGRATS on your new addition!!!

Now then...you need to stick with what he's used to but slowly transition him to what you want. I would start by putting the potty pad by the doggy door (you have a doggy door?) inside the house so he will see it/identify what it's for/use it/be praised and feel positive for being successful at going where you want. Then little by little move it first just outside the doggy door...leave it there for a little bit and gradually move it closer and closer to the area you want him to go. Finally put it in the grass (seems weird but you need to show him the grass is where you want him to go). Then take it away and see if he is still doing his business there...will definitely help that you have other dogs for him to watch go outside too... Just be patient...it'll work! :) When you see him going on the grass without the pad, be sure to give him lots of praise and maybe even a little treat to help reinforce that this is now the good place to go potty

when i first got reina, i had to step in the grass with her before she would go on grass. she doesn't really like grass, just goes on it to go potty and then hops back to the sidewalk. ;) good luck with your retiree!
