We definitely seem to have a shortage of maltese being shown here, in the Toronto area. One maltese was shown at the show in Richmond Hill a few weekends ago and I haven't seen any maltese entered in any relatively nearby shows since.

So I'm curious how many maltese are typically entered or shown at local shows in the US. When I say local, I guess I mean for those of you who frequently attend conformation shows or are showing yourselves and you hit all the local shows in your area--how many maltese would typically be entered in each show on average?

This seems to be a pretty typical breakdown of what I keep seeing at shows around me (Toronto area): http://www.mjnshowservices.com/mjnplists/oakvilleschedule2010.pdf

Does that look pretty similar to a typical US show or are we showing a lot less in general (not just of maltese)?

And wouldn't it be difficult to show a maltese to its champion when there's often no competition in the breed round (no points)?

Different areas of the US have more/less maltese entered than others. I live in california and it's fairly rare that i am the only one entered in a show(although it has happened) I took a look at the judging program you gave a link for and it does seem like low entries all around.

You should talk to Cathy A. (screenname Cathy) for info on showing in canada, because I know she was facing a similar problem and knew in order to finish a malt, she had to get them from the group ring (something a lot harder to do!)

Do you have a show malt now?

For an 'average' number of maltese at the areas I show, a typical number is 0-5 males, 2-9 bitches.

I showed Ava for 6 months in the northeast (Maryland to North Jersey) and many times she was the only female being shown. But then there were a few times where there were 5 or 6 malts. In one show she was the only malt entered!!!

Gosh, I feel slow today... I accidentally lost my post twice now.

Thanks for the info! I guess we aren't quite as dog crazy around here as I had thought. Considering the population in the general Toronto area, I figured the # entries would be comparable to those at shows in the busier parts of the US. Then again it feels like a lot of people around here get their dogs from brokers and don't ask many questions as long as the dog is cute. =/

I don't have a show malt--still just my two crazy mixes. I have thought about getting involved in showing (mostly recently), but it's something I wouldn't do unless I was prepared to totally throw myself at it (I'm a mild perfectionist). And right now, although I have a lot of free time, life seems just a little too hectic (my sweet grandma that I live next to is slowly dying and that consumes much of my time and thoughts atm). When things settle back down again, I will probably give it some serious thought, but for now I'm just learning about it all for fun more than anything else.

I can tell you from showing JJ for a year now that we have run into all sorts of different counts at shows. Last we had a count of 7 this past weekend JJ was the only one. So the counts here are unpredictable. I have shown in several states up and down the east coast and always amazed at what the counts might be. I hope if you do get into showing a Maltese that you do try to enjoy yourself and your dog
