Is this a maltese thing?

2030 Views 31 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  bentley's Mum
My malt has done this from day 1. We put her food bowl on a mat in the kitchen.
she will take one kibble and walk to her bed and eat it which is a different room.....then she repeats this over and over....one kibble--take it to her bed--- eat it---and repeat. Just walks back and forth back and forth. I've heard of maltese breeds doing this but I'm puzzled why she just cannot stay in the kitchen and eat her food.

Too funny :HistericalSmiley:maybe she likes the exercise.
So very cute. Tyler herds his food -- he kind of sweeps his mustache from all sides at food and pushes it around. The Maltese I pet-sat used to do the one kibble at a time thing all the time. Took it from his bowl to the carpet under the dr table and ate each one. Tyler doesn't do kibble so not his thing.
Boo did that when he was a picky puppy, but he grew out of it. He would even try to carry his little bowl around, until I changed to stainless steel.

It's a Malt thing. :chili: Everyone of my dogs does this.
I always thought that was a poodle thing. My poodles did that. My maltese doesn't.

Bisou does the exact same thing.
LOL, way back when I joined Maltese Only in 1997 there was a thread about this. I have to laugh. It is clearly a breed trait, both Cloud and Clancy did it. Mine do not do it now because I pen them at dinner time to keep them from stealing eachother's food. But they probably would still.
HAHA Nelson does this. He eats and just kinda walks around. In the kitchen he'll usually get a mouthful, and take a few steps and drop them on the floor and then eat them off the floor. We actually switched to this
Simple Solution PawSafe Floor Cleaner Concentrate - Stain & Odor - Cat - PetSmart
Floor cleaner for that reason. I was like he is eating it off the floor!!!! We have a stainless steel bowls and glass plates. He just chooses to put it on the floor first.

And sometimes he does just walk around with it, while chewing.
Yep! Unless he's hungry, Yeager will carry his kibbles to "his area," a rug, his bed, etc, to enjoy. Sometimes he even plays chase with the kibble :p I guess it is a Maltese thing. I used to think he was trying to get out of the way for my previous house mate's dog, because that dog always tried to eat Yeager's food(I didn't let him!). But he still does it even when the other dog isn't around anymore.
That is alot of exercise. Cookie just gobbles up her food from the dish but it's not kibble. When she gets a treat, she runs into the living room to eat it. :HistericalSmiley:
It must be a Malt thing because all of mine do it!
Yep! My Sunny would do that, but he'd drop the kibble at my feet to eat there!
The Boyz would always do this when we left kibble down to graze on! They would stand in line, first one would take a kibble and run to the living room, next in line..same thing!
A little parade.
In this house, that's Tinker's trait. One piece at a time....

Unless he's having a really busy day guarding the house, then he'll grab a mouth full and drop them at the front door to munch on in between barking as passers by.

The malts usually eat at the bowl.

YES, I believe it is. I've asked this question before and most of my M friends say they have at least one dog that does it. Indi is funny because she picks up FIVE pieces..not FOUR and not SIX but FIVE and carries them to a bed (there are 6beds available just on my main level :) ) eats them and then goes back for FIVE more. she will occasionally make a line of food on the floor also..and don't you DARE pick them up, or you get glared at and she puts MORE back. SO entertaining!!!

I was like :w00t: when I saw your post.... mine does the same thing!! :HistericalSmiley: She takes one kibble, then walk to her bed (which is just a couple of steps away, she eats and sleeps in my room with me  ) eat it.... and over and over.... I always thought she was the only one who did this 'cause she sooooo spoiled  , now I'm glad to know that a lot of malts on this forum do the same :HistericalSmiley::HistericalSmiley:
 YEP Most of my Maltese do it except when I have a guest Maltese who is FOOD agressive... she stands over the bowl and growls between chews! When you made this thread many of us SMers in our minds immediately imagined how many times we see our babies doing the travelling to bed to eat 1 kibble routine in a week's time!!
LOL, sparkey was doing that too when he was younger. I just moved his bed closer so he doesn't have to walk a mile to eat one kibble. he still does that for a treat. I give him a treat and he takes it to a comfortable bed to eat it.
