One of the Dash boys played too hard last night and, apparently didn't have enough food in him to get him through the night. When I got up this morning, he was starting a sugar low. The NutriCal wasn't handy (layed it down and forgot where I put it), so I grabbed the jelly. I had used this before when I had a litter in my car going for vet checks, and one was going sour on me. On that occasion, when I got to the vet, he freaked out because the pup had purple on her, and he thought she was throwing up something evil. Just as the time before, Baby Dash bounced right back. Actually, he was wagging his tail the whole time, but I could tell he wasn't his lively self when I first got up. He got a nice breakfast of baby food turkey, and while he has been eating kibble today, if he sees me come over to my desk, he wants to check out whether there is baby food for him again, as that is where he got it this morning.
I sure hope none of you have to deal with sugar lows, but, if you do, and you can't put your hands on the NutriCal fast enough, just go for the jelly. But, just as with the NutriCal, make sure you supervise a meal of high protein like the baby food following this.

Why do they have to have a meal of high protein aferwards? Kylee has become a horrible eater and I've been giving her Nutrical when she wont touch her food but I've never given the high protein meal afterwards...

You don't want to give anymore of the high sugar substitute than necessary. The sugar will raise the bloodsugar, but it will also not sustain it. You feed the protein because it keeps the bloodsugar more stable. Regular feeding is good, but, with the little ones, I just keep the baby food on hand and use that, as it is richer in the protein. You can also use baby food, rice cereal, egg yolk, and a little pudding. They seem to love this.

If you could see how hard Baby Dash plays, you would understand that he needs careful monitoring. He is the smallest thing here (, but he thinks he is as big as the other guys. I had four or five playing chase in a circle around the furniture last night, and he was right in the middle of it. He's fine now.

I mix these things together to feed them. I wouldn't suggest using it unless you have one who has a difinite eating problem. I've found that from the time of weaning until around ten to twelve weeks, it is crucial to see that regular feedings are done, regardless of what extremes you go to. If mine were older, and they were just picky eaters, I wouldn't be as concerned. I would try to wait them out.
I doubt that your pup would go back to just kibble if it got a choice of this or some of the things I mix up when they are in transition from weaning to really eating well. I also use stage 2 baby food which is mean and noodles or meat and rice.
When I have one I have to use my formulas on I gradually mix in kibble so that it becomes more kibble and less formula as time goes on. Or I do like I did with Secret last week when he was being picky--I just keep a cup of kibble on my desk and sprinkle it out on the floor, like it is a treat. He and LIz are here by me now, eating what I've dropped. Baby Dash is trying to bite everyone's legs to get them to play again. I honestly think that there is something missing in the Maltese puppy mentality at this age, as it's like they just forget that they are suppose to eat. Or, they know there is a sucker like me who will be there with the special food for them.

These are great tips.  Thank you for sharing.  Will honey work the same as nutrical?

Yes, honey works well too. I once met a woman who had been breeding Yorkies for years. She put down a fresh bowl of water daily with a little honey in it for her babies. She said they would drink even when they wouldn't eat.
If these running around here now don't settle soon, I'll have to given them all a boost. They are making me tired, just watching them. Of course as long as they are running they aren't pulling hair out of another one. Oops, one is dragging another one around by the beard. Time to put a stop to this play.

I should add that I keep canned food here too for picky eaters. The mixes I fix up are used when the canned food won't work, or when I have to use a syringe to feed, and I can make that "soupy. I have Baby Dash sitting here by the keyboard, chowing down on canned dog food before we go to bed, so I don't have a repeat of this morning.

With Lady being a diabetic and insulin dependant, I always have to worry about low blood sugar and so-called insulin comas. I have to keep a quick "sugar fix" with me at all times so I have packets in my purse, the glove compartment of my car, a pocket of her carrier, etc.

Besides jelly, those little packets of honey will work. Pancake syrup packets from McDonald's or Burger King are great, too. Another one is a tube of cake decorating frosting, believe it or not.

The sugar will give them a quick high and get them out of the crisis, but as Lucy Lou says, they need a meal afterwards or they can crash again.

Thanks for all the input. I stopped at a store the other day and bought Kylee some new food to see if maybe she was just bored of her old food...and low and behold she ate the new food. I mixed it with her old food so she wouldnt get a belly ache but the little bugger wouldnt touch her old kibble and ate around it to get the the new kibble. SHe had some soft poop but at least she ate. I guess I will just have to keep switching her food up as she gets bored...Thanks for all the advice though!!

In addition to regular can food, I always have a supply of Hill's A/d!

I keep the A/D here too, but I have found that some of mine don't like it. Pedigree is one pupppy food that most all of them like. I know a number of breeders use that for poor eaters/small pups.
I've found two kind that I can't get mine to eat that well--Eukanuba Puppy and Pro Plan Puppy. Mine do eat the Pro Plan Puppy kibble. When we were going through the problems with the hurricane here, all I could get was a bag of the Purina Puppy. That LOVE that. It's funny to watch them pick all the green and red kibble out of the pile.
My friend and I were talking about our pups tonight, and she is giving hers about 1/2 teaspoon or less of peanut butter during the day. She says it also helps the coat.

I am going to have to try peanut butter see if the fluffs will eat it. But mine will eat anything if they think it is coming from the table though.

Unfortunately I know all too well about the Low sugar and Blood sugar level
crashes. Needless to say my second day with my Malt was not the most
pleasant, I had nutrical and tried to give him some, he didn't take it so I watered
it down a little bit and forced it in his mouth. And then on our way to the Emergency vet we went.

#1 the breeder gave me Cosmo sooner than she was suppose to, she said he was
eating well but she was also mixing Gerber rice cereal with GROUND up Purina One kibble. I couldn't get him to eat anything but the rice cereal. Infact I couldn't get ANY of my pets (not fussy eaters at all) to eat the purina one kibble so it went in the trash along with the baby cereal. The vet told me that the cereal was just like a candy bar to them and they would become fussy eaters. They sent me home with 3 cans of A/D that he ate very good. Now he is on Nutro canned food that I am slowly adding Nutro kibble into.

I was very mad that the breeder sent him home with me when he wasn't eating well, but I chalked it up as a lesson learned. Cosmo is now doing very well infact I think he might be getting a tummy so I might have to start decreasing the amounts (at first I was just happy he was eating).

The emergency vet also told me if nutrical wasn't on hand you could use a little watered down Kayo syrup or watered down honey (because both are so thick.) but that you could also use mayple syrup. After having to force feed Cosmo and having an eagle eye on him for the first couple of weeks I finally feel like I can breathe. I still keep a very close eye on him but in a much more relaxed manner.

Ok sorry I am rambling on just wanted to help anyone else who might be going through this experience. Cosmo is doing good now and I am always comenting him on his poodle leg (the leg they had to shave in the middle to put the IV in)
