Keeping Pups Warm with A/C on at night

2380 Views 19 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Sylphide and Shrek's Mom
Hi,

Both my Malts now sleep on my bed. When they slept in their crates, I could throw a blanket over the top to keep the heat in. Now these two tiny little bodies stretch on in my bed at night and I worry about them getting cold.

I sleep under covers, but the dogs do not. I also like to use the ceiling fan to circulate the air, but have now switched it to the lowest speed to keep from really cooling the room.

I keep the A/C at 76 but I am not sure that is an accurate temperature plus the vents are on either side of the bed so when they are on the air definitely blow on the bed.

If they were cold would they huddle together, or curl up next to me? Should I be worried. Bella has a full coat and Topper has a puppy cut.

Thanks.

Sharon

when sprites cold, she'll go under the covers with me. when ellie is cold...she'll just curl up against cynthia. she doesnt like the feeling of covers---but she also doesnt get cold easily.

i would also, during the night when its cold, grab the dogs one at a time and try to put them under the covers with you. if they stay....that means that they like it and they've learned what to do when theyre cold. if they leaave---they dont like going under the covers.

I have the same problem with my Siamese cats who think 90 degrees is a comfortable temperature year round!

They HATE the ceiling fan! I have one of those Snuggle Up heated throws from Sunbeam (Walmarts carries them). I keep it on the bottom of my bed so they can go lie on that when they get cold (which is most nights!)

You could also get them some lightweight doggie pajamas.

I did think about P.J.s but thought I might be going to far. Also, Topper would probably find it a great way to drag Bella around the floor. He is a real character.

The heated throws does sound like a possible solution. I will have to check out Walmart. Do you warm them in the microwave?

Thanks.

Sharon
Ours just cuddle with us if they are cold. We have extra throw blankets on the bed and they make nests with those, except Josie she is on my head most of the time so no problem with keeping warm there (for either of us
). We leave our AC set at about the same as you and so far so good.

geez 76 is not cold. I have the A/C at 73 during the night and Alex is fine. And his body hair is very very short. With putting PJ's on him with 76° all you are going to achieve is making him sweat. Their body regulates their temperature.
Missy much prefers cold to heat so AC is never a problem.
I think if your babies were cold they'd be trying to "snuggle" in under the blankets.
In the spring/fall we have the windows open and sometimes the nitgtime air might get a bit chilly and if that was the case...Missy just found her way under the blankets.

If Bailey gets cold, its under the covers for him.Lamby sleeps under(yes I said under) my pillow cold or not. That was a story in itself, scared me to death the first time! Kirbie Boy doesnt like to be under the covers,or pillow
so he snuggles between my legs every night.Between the three of them its a magor thing to turn over all the time.Sometimes I wish they loved DH as much as they do me! Not

Lol Sheila, Alex has that habit too to sleep between the legs. But at least he is willing to go to Daddy if I am turning myself and disturb him.

Tunny has given up he just sleeps w/his head on my hubby's leg. He doesn't move when sleeping, I do. But Tunny, doesn't like the fan on him so he will move up higher between us if he is cold normally he likes the end of bed.

Sheila,

When I first got Lamby,I would wake up several times through the night & reach my hand out to check on her.Usually she slept either above my head on a pillow or curled up against my chest. She was so tiny & fraigle,I was worried we would roll over & hurt her,and her surrondings were new to her.
One night I woke up as usual and reached out to check on her &
NO LAMBY
I felt franticlly all over the bed in the dark.DH was at work that night so it was me & the flufffbutts in a king size bed. Still NO Lamby...I got up and turned on the light...Nope..searched under the covers...Nope.So I raced all through the house looking for her.Under chairs & couches.in corners, under the desk in my office, etc.etc Still NO Lamby! By this time I was almost in tears,I was sure some crazy person had to have snuck into the house and stolen my new love.I even went as far as to look on the deck(just in case she was smarter than I thought & had let herself out to potty !) Of course Bailey & Kirbie are following me all through the house looking at me like Id totaly lost my mind
I headed back to the bedroom to look under covers again & then it hit me! I remembered a story Robyn(cookiecat) had told me in our many e-mails back and forth before I went to pick Lamby up....It seems Miss Lamby had been found one morning to be under Robyns DH's pillow!!! So I looked under my pillow(heart racing) and DADAAAAAAAA low and behold ,Lambie looked up at me with those big black eyes & sweet face
I think she thought..Man shes crazy
Layed her head back down & went back to sleep! LOL Ive never been so scared in my whole life! All I wanted to do after that was sit and look at her ,I was so relieved no one had stolen her ! Thus is the story of Lamby and the pillow! Remember ,you asked for it ! Haha And there if not curled up by my chest, she sleeps to this day!

Hahahahahahahahaha! Sheila I remember when you told me about this. I talked to you about it on the phone and you were soooooooooo upset. LOLOL She always snuck under that pillow.

I wonder if she is just so happy not to sleep in a crate anymore all day & night that she sort of hides closest to the head/face for comfort? Who knows. She is the quirkiest little dog I have ever known you could seriously write a book about her and I am not kidding. There is just something different about her.... still hard to put my finger on it.

Hugs,
Robyn

Glad I asked for it!! That is too cute, I wonder why she wants to be all the way under the pillow.

I think its her sercurity. She has to be as close to me as possible. She doesnt even sleep under an empty pillow,it has to be the one my head is on! Even when Im working around the house, she will come to me and cry to be picked up.Then she will crawl up my neck & wrap herself around it. Ive learned to work onehanded cause I support her with the other! I just cant tell that sweet little face no!! I guess because for so long she didnt get love(till she went to Robyn's) so she gobbles it up now!!

Robyn,Haha I forgot I had been so upset that I called & told you what had happened!

Shareyn, didnt mean to steal your thread

Bella likes the AC so I'm not sure I have much advice, but Bella will get under the covers if shes cold or just feels snuggly. Its so cute how some dogs will get right under the pillow. My brother just got his puppy Saturday and she has claimed his pillow, she likes to curl around the top of his head, so that she has almost all the pillow and he has maybe three inches of it.
Rena at Barkin Dog Clothes makes fabulous outfits at amazing prices. Sylphide and Shrek have super short cuts and they are both wearing joggers and pjs when it gets chilly, either from the ac or from dropping temperatures. Keeps them cosy :D
