I found this article and I think its really interesting... The part were they say a simple neutering can cost around $800... this is true... Kodie's neutering and pulling of baby teeth cost me around $1,000.. because of the special care needed (as they also state). They also talk about pet insurance, the plus and minus'...

Thank you for the article, it was interesting. I know we will have to go through the cost of neutering Indy in the near future also. Because of his size the Vet wants to hold off until he is older, so we shall see how this goes ourselves

We decided on putting money aside instead of ins. mostly because of all the conditions they put on it.

I think that's a smart decision. After you get through that expensive first year, that's the time you can really stash some money away, while he's young and healthy. I wish I'd had that opportunity with Lady, but we jumped right into major vet bills right away when I adopted her.

I have had multiple pets all my life and just cannot believe how expensive it is to own a pet now. It really is becoming a luxury. Any trip to my vet now seems to be $100 best case scenario! Throw a simple urine or blood test in and it goes up from there. And forget xrays! My vet started an xray review fee now so the cheapest you can get by (with only 1 xray) is another $85. And who needs only one xray?

Lady had a stubborn uti last fall and the "normal" workup of a sterile culture, a couple of xrays for stones and some medication was just under $300. Since I am already spending $150 a month on her meds and diabetic supplies alone, that's the equivalent of a car payment!

Well I have to say Missy's vet's charges are very fair on each individual item... but
with all her various issues.. it seems even if we go for one thing.. it often happens she is due for something to do with one of her other health issues.. so rarely do we got out of there much under $100 and more often than not.. it is over that ... and! we are there pretty frequently.
AND this is not counting all the 'freebies" her vet is so wonderful about throwing in from time to time. Also not counting the supplies I get from druggist and send for.
BUT .. worth every penny!!.. so what we don't go on vacations.. wouldn't leave her anyway.. ( the "destinations" will be there long after Missy is gone). besides, we were lucky to have traveled earlier and I don't even miss it.
Being able to give Missy the best we can.. is so much more pleasurable and rewarding!.. as the saying goes.. to see Missy thrive..."priceless"!

My way of makeing the price of taking care of Sunny seem reasonable was that I desided I wanted a dog rather than doing differnt things. I dont play any type of sport a need to buy equipment for, I dont have a great car, I almost never shop at the mall for my cloths....instead I have my little Sunny boy. He is totally worth it to me, although I will still try and save money where every I can. I just think its more fun to go to the store and by dog toys and bows and shirts, than buying electronics or new furnature.

Someone should have told me just how much medical care for dog can cost. I had NO idea. Miko is our first dog (although my husband's family have had dogs - they just don't take care of them - no neutering, no dental care, nothing

). We truly love Miko like he is our child, but if I knew all the expenses we could encounter, I definitely would have reconsidered having a dog at this point in our lives.

oh my god, this totally reminds me of a classmate i had last semester. so last semester she was like "i have puppies available, you want one" (she had chihuahuas....and knew i love dogs) and i was like "no".

then last week she was like "my dog just had puppies, you want one". and i was like "didnt she have pups last semester" and she was like "no, this is her daughter"

and i was like "what??? why??" (well, i sorta said it loud. lol) and she was like "we always have our females have a litter before we spay them" and i was like "WHAT??? where'd you hear that? and isnt she just a puppy" and she was like "she's almost a year old, and my vet told me this, so that the girls dont get cancer". and i was like "GET A NEW VET!!"

then i told her to just look it up on the internet and she'll find the truth. i almost had a heart attack when i spoke to her :new_Eyecrazy:

When I think of what kind of car I could be driving now instead of my 11 year old low end BMW, instead of having my two Malte's Jimmi and Frankie, I could cry.....
but then I think of all the joy I have from having them with me and I retract.

My medical bills for myself would probably be higher

. I'd probably have high blood pressure and tons of shrink visits for anxiety, stress, depression, etc.

Every penny I paid to my vet is worth it in the long run.

I appreciate yor honesty. Dogs are expensive luxuries, aren't they? This shows the average cost of having a dog.

First year: $640 to $1,125

Estimated annual costs thereafter: $440 to $775

Total cost over a dog’s lifetime is about $6,360 to $11,200.

Pretty staggering, isn't it? And this is a best case scenario! For a dog like my Lady, whose monthly meds alone run about $150, this is nothing. Throw a knee surgery in there like you just did with your Miko and this figure goes way up!
