Just now, Milo woke up form a nap in a panic, throwing up. He ran around, then started to rub his face on the carpet for almost 5 minutes. He then threw up again rubbed his face on the carpet and ran into his crate.

He's been diagnosed with tapeworms. Which from what I've read, should increase his appetite, not decrease it. And he hasn't been eating much, which is why I'm really worried. He's not acting like himself, and seems to be sleeping a lot today.

He has an appointment to get his third set of shots on Thursday... because it's Sunday today the Vet is closed. Should I be looking for an emergency pet hospital to take him to, or wait until his appointment Thursday? I could be totally over reacting, I just don't know... Has this ever happened to any of your babies?

Isn't he taking meds for the tapeworms? Maybe he is having a reaction to the meds?

I would call the vet if you are concerned...poor baby....I would be freaking too. Hugs a good vibes coming your way.

He is acting a little depressed today...just lying around sleeping a lot... really cuddly. He's not interested in eating at all, not even treats. We gave him a treat earlier and he played with it but didn't really eat much of it.

He threw up twice, one huge one that was dark brown and the second one was smaller and the same color.

He is taking medication for the worms, safeguard. I was wondering if this is all part of getting rid of the worms...? Or if he's reacting to the safeguard...

fenbendazole can cause vomiting...if he does it again, or starts acting really depressed i would call the vet.

uhhh, maybe someone should educate me or us about tapeworms. I never thought about dogs having tapeworms.

I feel so bad for Milo. I hope he gets well REAL soon.

Dogs can get tape worms from infested poop (if another dog has tape worms), or from eating an infected flea. I think there are other ways too but those are the two main ways.
You will know if your dog has tapeworm because it will look like they have rice in their poo. Most of the time the rice will wiggle. These are segments of the tapeworm.

Here's a link about it.

The pictures are cartoons but it explains the tapeworm process well.

Here are some real pictures.

Fantasia had tape worms when she was a puppy and that's why we stopped taking her outside to potty. Other dogs in our complex all go potty in OUR yard and their owners don't clean up after them, and the complex doesn't seem to care when I call all the time to complain. Anyway I found the tapeworm in her poop when she had an accadent in the house (it would have harder to notice outside because she poos in the grass and I pick it up with a plastic bag and don't examine it). I knew what it was right away because I had tapeworm when I was in like 2nd grade. Don't know how I got it and don't remember how I got rid of it (probably saw a Dr. for it). Anyway we got Fantasia wormed and I cleaned out her crate. Her crate was so grose I was glad that she wasn't sleeping in our bed at this time because her crate and blankets were covered in little dried up segments of the tape worm. It looked like a bunch of dried rice in her bed.

So glad you caught it!
Good information to know too...thanks for sharing! I wish people would clean up after their dogs...even if it IS little tiny poo!

Oh my goodness. I just saw this post and wanted to wish Milo well. Poor baby, Angus and I hope he's feeling better today. I don't know what I'd do if I saw Angus do that. I think you kept a cooler head that I'd be able to. I bet Milo's glad to have you to nurse him back to health.

Tapeworms are actually flea larvae so if your dog has fleas, you should be on the lookout for tapeworms. They swallow the flea eggs when they lick themselves. Right after a dog or cat poops you can sometimes see a live segment on them near their anus or in their poop. They are flat and white and move. They die quicky after exposure to air so what you usually see is what looks like rice in their poop.

Hello,

Milo seems to be feeling a bit better today. He still isn't eating. I'm not really sure what's wrong. I'm taking him to the vet on Thursday and getting a full check up. If he does have tapeworms he should be eating more... right?

I've been dissecting his poop every time and so far no worms, or anything resembling rice. I do see a lot of hair though. Maybe it's worms not hair.... I don't really know. When he chews his teething bone, he sometimes bites the carpet by mistake so that could explain the hair.

He hasn't thrown up today. But last night he would drink a bunch of water, then throw some of it up. He seems to be a little dehydrated. I'm trying to encourage him to drink as much as possible.

Thanks so much for all your advise and well wishes. It's calming to come here when I'm freaking out about something, even if it's something totally off the wall.

I'll keep you all posted on how he's doing and what the vet says Thursday.

If he still isn't eating and keeping water down by this evening or tomorrow morning at the latest I think I would take him to the vet right away. I know our vet suggested turkey baby food to help Tunder get his medicine down without vomiting it up.

Perhaps he threw up the water because he drank too much too fast. Maybe every 15 minutes you could give him just a little bit at a time and see if it stays down. IMHO I would not have the vet give his shots on Thurs. Seems to me that he needs all his immune system to get well and not have it involved in the vaccines, etc.

I agree. Hold off for a week or so until he is feeling better.
