Well, my sister found a bassett hound on her street...her neighbor was going to take her to the local animal control, so fortunately I was at her house visiting when this happened. I took the dog, and made about 15 "found dog" signs and put them around the area where she was found. She is now in my back yard HOWLING! It is only 6:45pm and I have not received any calls so far. I hope, since it starts to get dark at about 8:30pm that someone will see the sign and call me to pick her up. 4 dogs is way too much for me. I think it is an inside dog, but I won't be able to keep her inside, so I put a few old sheets in our old travel kennel that was for my Rottie, and she is near my dog's kennel outside...they are keeping her company. It is the SWEETEST dog though!

She followed me everywhere, she didn't even have a leash on!

What a pain, I have a headache, but I did not want to take her to animal control. -_-

You will feel so good about yourself when the owners come looking for her or you find her a good home

I had the same thing not too long ago not wanting to take them to a shelter. I am glad it doesnt happen often or I'd need a farm, so I know where you're coming from!

That is great that you took her home. If you don't hear anything by tomorrow you can try calling around to vets offices in your area. Oh, you could maybe take her in to see if she is microchiped!

It's a great thing that you are doing for the Basset. Of course I'm sure any of us on SM would do that same, but I'm glad she ran into you! If you don't get any calls soon it might be a good idea to take her to check if she is microchipped- but I'm sure you had thought of that already! Good luck finding its owner.

I have a very sweet bassett....
The problem with mine is that we don't have a fenced in yard...and when she gets out of the dog run...her nose leads her AWAY...

And her stubborn bassett tendencies keep her from coming back when I call her.

Therefore...after MANY times of chasing her down the road and hauling her big heavy butt back to the yard...she now has to be on a long lead when she is out of the run. SOMEDAY we hope to have a fenced in yard...but for now, she seems fine on the lead. We got the longest we could find...so she has a lot of room....but I still hate it that she won't stay where she belongs!
Anyway, my story was told because maybe that is what happened with the one you have...maybe she got out and just started following her nose until she got too far from home. Maybe you will get a call soon!

This will turn out to have a happy ending if it's the last thing I do, darn it!

My friend told me that she spoke to an animal rescue person, and that person said the proper thing to do would be:

1. Take her to the local animal control so they can check her for a micro chip, and if the owner comes in they can take her;

2. If I relinquished her to a rescue, and then somehow she was adopted by someone other than the owner, the owner can sue me if they later went looking for the dog and someone else adopted her...they can sue me.

So, this morning I took her to the animal control, they are going to hold her for 5 days, and I placed myself as #1 on the adoption list if the owner doesn't come and pick her up. They checked her for a microchip but she didn't have one on her (I kind of knew that would be the case). It actually costs $100 to adopt her...WTF? Whatever, I'll pay it. -_- After that I will take her to a Bassett Hound rescue, or try to find her a good home myself...she is house trained and has the greatest manners. She follows you everywhere and wags her tail everytime she sees anybody coming in her direction!

I wish I could keep her, but 4 is just too much...

So, I will have to wait until August 3rd and then I'll take her myself and begin this process all over again. This is really time consuming, but well worth it! I hope I am making a difference!

It sounds like she had a happy home if she's so well behaved and friendly. I'm hoping it was just an accident and that she wasn't just left behind. You're awesome for doing this!! I hope that her family finds her soon

You are doing the right thing, but it must have been hard to leave her. If her owners do find her and come and get her will you be able to find out that she is home?

I asked them that and they said I could ask them...but not really. I guess after 5 days passes and I get the phone call, I'll know that they didn't come pick her up, you know?

Gosh, if mine ever got out of the house, they wouldn't have collars on either... I never keep collars on them in the house... too much chance to get caught on something....
