Neutered

I have noticed that many of you have your fur balls neutered. I am not an expert about this kind of stuff and confused a little.
Was not raised around puppies or dogs, so you guys are teaching me lots on here.

A few questions.......
Why are you having it done?
Are you not interested in breeding them?
Are you doing it for health reasons?
Whats the best age?

Oh, and I believe that by having them neutered, it keeps them very babylike--which I just LOVE!

I don't think anything is wrong with breeding your dog...
I have a problem when people become puppymills or breed genentically bad dogs, because that is hurting the breed more than anything. Like breeding dogs with bad patellas...not good, you know?
Before we bought Chanel, we were thinking that we would breed the Maltese when we purchased her...turns out...nah, too much work on our part! I have too much crap going on in my life!

Oh, and Chanel has been more affectionate after having gotten spayed.

I would never be interested in breeding dogs. I've purchased two dogs from show breeders and also have a good friend that breeds champion vizlas. These people research and research to know as much as they can about their breeds and bloodlines. It is much more intense than I had ever imagined. Sometimes traits that don't appear in your dog can still be present in the bloodlines and when bred with another dog with particular traits can then show up down the line. They have DNA checked and they spend a lot of time to make sure that whatever breeding they do is for the good of the breed. I just don't have the time or energy to do that much work.

On the other side of the coin I have owned a cocker spaniel that was bred by some lovely people who adored their female and wanted to have babies. They found a champion male, bred the two and produced some really bad tempered babies - fear biters, nervous, etc. It would be my luck to end up with puppies like my Ebony, who we loved but put up with for 14 years till she died.

Gizmo was neutered yesterday at 7 months. After looking into my vet insurance they stipulate that it has to be done before the dog is one year old, so it's a good thin gI did it. He stayed overnight and I am picking him up today. I missed him sooooooo much!

You mean your vet won't neuter a dog over a year old? I know they prefer to do it early and that most recommend 6 months (although there is a trend now to neuter even earlier to prevent marking and other male behavior). I've never heard of a vet flat out refusing to neuter past one year, though.

That would be tough. A lot of people mistakenly think they'd like to breed their male dog, then realize some of the behavior associated with an intact male dog, especially one who has been bred, is not worth it and decide to neuter them when they are 18 months or older.
No i think Gizmo meant her vet health insurance
anyway let us know how he is doing im sure he will be fine
i remember when i went to get maxi i couldnt wait to see him and he was so happy i was afraid he would bust his stitches

First off, your Gizmo is adorable. That picture is so cute! I want to ask about your insurance...are you happy with it? Which policy do you have? I have been looking into it, and have been back and forth on whether or not to get it.
I don'thave health insurance for Lady since no one would ever insure her with all her pre-existing conditions, but I know several people who have purchased it for their puppies.

The big downside I have heard is that if any health issues do come up later on, for example diabetes like my Lady, they don't renew your policy. So I was told to weigh the cost per year with what it would cost without insurance for "well dog" care to see if it's worth it.
