Hi there... I'm now a member of this site. I got my Maltese, Massimo this past March. My husband got him for me as a anniversary present, as he knew I REALLY wanted a beautiful ball of fluff! After I had him home for a while, I was wondering if others were as nuts about their dogs as I was! I was totally consumed with him! I found others here had the same reaction to the breed as me.

After a while I was addicted to this site! I went back and forth from here to MO in the begining, and I saw some of the replies to some of the posts over there and I was afraid to say anything... as I had some of the same questions and they seemed to be reprimanded for their ignorance. So needless to say I felt the warmth here and never looked back. I was one of those "silent" members if you know what I mean. I came here all the time, looked at all the beautiful pictures, read the forums but never posted. I got a LOT of usefull info. But I'm so glad to FINALLY become a member! You guys are great!

WOW! What a warm welocme!
Well, in addition to my Massimo I have another dog - Jasper, my Irish Setter. When I was 19 (I'm 26 now) my father who was a breeder of Irish Setters gave her to me as a Christmas persent. My father past away March of 03, and for that reason Jasper means the world to me. Of course I didnt think that just after I got her, she was a very rambunctious pup- I came home from work about a week after I had her, and they only thing left of my newly purchased queen mattress was the SPRINGS! (and of course the horrible foam mess through out the house) In the time I've had her, she's eaten about 13 pairs of shoes, an oak end table, gotten into the refrigerator (and eaten just about everything she could get into) and stolen our hearts. Now, being an older dog, I couldn't ask for more. She's extremely intelligent and obedient and a true part of the family. The story on Massimo- I had seen Maltese before, in dog shows, and I was always taken by them. I read a few books on them and I did some research on the internet, and found that they weren't only beautiful, they were, pretty much, the perfect dog! So I told my husband I wanted one, showed him what they were on the internet and made him sit through dog shows- He was a "BIG DOG" lover and didn't want the froo-froo kind. What did he call them....oh yeah "An expensive fur covered kidney that barked" ...But after he bought Massimo for me(for our anniversary), and I'm proud to say- he has been converted to a Maltese lover.
I am a mother of 2 biological children as well, my daughter Morgan is the oldest and will be starting her first year of kindergarten (GASP) this September, and my son, Ashton will be 3 in October. I know what you all are thinking- OMG! She has young children AND a Malt! Deadly combo, right? Nope....and not because I have the best behaved children in the world, it's because they're the most loving. I think mostly because they were raised around baby animals (My father's setters and the stray cat's kittens under the porch)... At first I was kinda scared, but right now I am a stay at home mom and they are ALWAYS supervised.

Thanks for sharing your story.
My grandparents had an Irish Setter when I was a wee child. The only memory I have of him...his name was Shawn...is that when I was between 2 or 3....I was visiting at my grandma's, as I always did, and I went to lay my head on Shawn...also, like I always did. Well, for whatever reason, Shawn did not like me that night and came real close to taking my little head off. My grandparents were scared to death! HE got put out real quick and I got lots of love. I never really saw him do anything b/c I was laying down on my back, I just felt him move and growl. I felt him on my head, but didn't realize it was his mouth...
He was always a gentle dog, and my grandparents-to this day-28 years later, still say they don't know why that night was different.

Anyway, yours is beautiful. As is your malt.

I also "gasp"

have young children...7 and 4. They have also been around animals all their lives and know how to be gentle and kind. They have been snapped at by Brinkley a few times when they don't heed his warnings. Most of the time it is because they want to "mess" with him...like hug and kiss and play and dance...and he is not interested at the time.

The only other problem we had was with my youngest learning that you could not just "drop" him from her chest like you could the cats.

He rarely lands on his feet!!! A few scares there...but that is why supervision is SO important.

So, welcome! This place is great...and my new name should be Windy, because I cannot say anything in a "short" manner...LOL :wacko:

Wow, sorry to hear about your setter ordeal. My father's first Irish Setter was also named "Shawn". He had gotten HER (yes, her) a few years before I was born and I was raised around pups ever since. So when I moved out, it was only right (my father thought anyway) I should have one of my own. But I have never heard ANYTHNING like your experience beofre. Irish Setters are the most gentlest dog I have ever known.....even more so than my Maltese! Massimo can be a bit snappish when he's taking treats from me or the kids, but we can give Jasper anything-she'll take it right out of our mouths w/o touching our faces. She's always been gentle with our kids -as babies they would often try to ride her-and she just sat there and looked at me with those sad brown eyes-so I would remove them. I'm shocked an Irish Setter would show agression. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with them!! Truely!

My kids were the same way, always wanting Massimo on their laps, wanting to kiss him, play with him (when he didn't want to). Mass has this thing he does, like a grunt, not quite a growl-when he's had enough and the kids respond to that (THANK GOODNESS). I was worried about them dropping him at first, but that only happened once, and I sat my son down and explained that if he did that again, it would hurt the puppy, like him (my son) falling off the bed. He knows better now.........I think.......

But anyway- thanks for the warm welcome!! I'm glad to see there's another Malt owner with children!

Also The whole no young children aroung maltese rule.... I think you know your kids better than a book does, but hey thats just my opinon!

I don't have any kids myself, but our neighbors have a little Pom (brit's boyfriend

) and two small kids, I think 7 and 6 or something like that. PLUS they are "rowdy" boys! But when they are playing with Brit'ny they hold her carefully and stroke her, and keep Kosmo (the Pom) from playing too rough with her.

So I think kids are fine as long as the are SUPERVISED and you know their personalities!

But WELCOME and NEVER be silent again!

thats so awesome about your dogs and baby. i know that my nieces are pretty good with dogs....but i still dont trust them. lol. how do your dogs get along? i cant believe your irish setter ate your bed!!! lol. i read these "horror" stories and cant believe it. i hope to see more posts!!
