NILIF Program

I've just seen an information brochure (I found it in one of the discussions here) on the NILIF program.

I am going to start this straight away - after reading it, it sounds exactly what has been going on with Abby lately!

I have a question though.... if I ask her to do something and she doesn't - what do I do?

And should I leash her every time she goes outside?

Also, should I make her sleep on the floor instead of my bed? I have some old pillows that I could do up with her blanket to make her a bed - but how do I get her to stay on it? Should I set up her play pen again until she is used to sleeping on it?

I'll feel so bad making her sleep on the floor. I know she'll hate me for it...

You mentioned you had a grown daughter, so think of raising Bijou the same way. With human children you have to set boundaries, enforce rules, etc., to protect them from harm and raise them to be good, responsible, well adjusted adults. You have to set yourself up as the authority figure to accomplish this.

This doesn't mean you love them less. In fact, it shows just how much you do love them.

Believe me, it's much easier with dogs than kids! Dogs are naturally pack animals so they look for a leader to make them feel safe just as if they were out in the wild.

We did a book club this winter with Donaldson's book [/I]The Culture Clash. It's a wonderful book to help you understand how dogs think so you can train them more effectively. It might be very helpful for you.
I will look for the book on line right now. Thank you.
Amazon.com has it for less than $13. That's a lot less than most of us paid for it last winter!

I just ordered Culture Clash and Power of Positive Dog Training. Both books looked good and the positive dog training book also addressed separation anxiety, not to mention that I can take advantage of the super saver option of free shipping on orders of $25.00 or more.
