Ok gals, let's see what all memories you have tucked in the back (way back)of your minds, from the late 40's through the 50's.

Like: Dress, Radio programs, TV programs, fads, favorite things we did, etc.

We had our 'guy's' class ring wrapped with Angora, or we put gobs of adhesive tape on it and painted the tape with nail polish.
We wore poodle skirts, penny loafers and tied scarves around our necks.
Ponytails was the hairstyle of the era.
On the radio we listened to:
Amos 'n Andy
Fibber McGhee and Molly
The Great Gildersleeve
The Shadow Knows
The Green Hornet
The Lone Ranger
We had a drive-in called 'Custer's Last Stand' where all the kids would 'hang-out' after school and in the evenings.
And Ohhhhh, all the kool cars...remember the 'glass-pack mufflers' that would just rumble when the guys would put the car in low gear?

I could go on, but I will let some of you (that can remember that far back) add more to this.

Dig deep into that ole memory gals...and guys (if you can remember that far back)

OK... here goes..... From late 50s to early 60s.......

We had telephones that had rotary dials on them and the phones were permanently attached to the wall. The phones were owned by the phone company. And there was only one phone company in each area... ours was Southern Bell.

Long distance calls were very expensive to make and you didn't make them unless it was for a very important reason.

There were no malls or shopping centers. We shopped downtown and we always dressed up.

We wore Villager dresses with coordinating sweaters and Weejun loafers. No copycat brands would do.

We bought 78 rpm records... that came in red or yellow and had a tiny hole in the middle.

The hair-do of the moment consisted of wearing a little clip-on bow in the area between our bangs and rest of our hair.

There was nothing like a new pair of saddle shoes that were all clean and white. And we wore them with "Bobby Socks".

My first pair of "high" heels were called "French heels".

My favorite movie star was Sandra Dee.

Ahhhhh..... the good ole days...... :D

Well, I was just a youngster then, from the 50's on, but I do remember being able to play safely on the street without any fear.
I remember the old 78 records my parents used to play on old wind up turntables.
We didn't own a car so if we wanted to go to the beach we had to catch two busses then a train to get there.
There was no television so we would play great board games and card games to entertain ourselves at night. I loved these times because families actually had time to sit around the table and enjoy a home cooked meal and a good chat about the day's events.
I remember the hot summer nights when there was no airconditioning and the house was too hot to sleep so we would all put our pillows and a blanket out on the lawn and lay there and count the stars and play I spy.
I loved those carefree times, when it was safe to do all those wonderful family things.

Yes, I remember playing in the streets... kick the can, especially. And the only air conditioner in the house was in my parent's bedroom, so if my room was warm, my mom, bless her heart, would fan me with a paper fan until I fell asleep!

I remember the games we played in the streets was marbles and me being the marble queen that I was and the tomboy too, I ended up with the biggest bag because I would always win and if you won you got to take the marbles off your competitors. It got that way that no-one wanted me to play any more, so I would hide behind the hedge at the front of our house and pelt rocks at the sore losers.
We also used to play football and a game we called rounders, and cricket too.
Back when I was small we didn't know what an airconditioner was, I think Australia was a bit behind in the technology and even the television wasn't around till I was about 10.
The good thing too was that the programs were innocent and no violence and sex could be shown, if we saw someone kissing in a movie we would giggle in our sleeves, and the spook shows were so scary then, but so tame now. I remember sitting up late at night with my dad waiting for Frankenstien and The Blob and all those other black and white spook shows.
We had our version of Bandstand too and the music was great back then, none of that horrible rap music and stuff depicting violence and sex in such a sick way, no wonder our kids of today are the way they are.

Scoobydoo, I know what you mean... I remember that the movie "A Summer Place" was considered a bit risque at the time. My mother and I saw it together and I was sooo embarrassed. I remember someone said the word "bra" in the movie and my mother commented, "They'll say anything in movies these days."!!

Oh you are so right, I think my favorite all time movie was Gone With the Wind followed by South Pacific, Oklahoma, Anni Get Your Gun and all those good movies and I also loved the Jeanette McDonnald and Nelson Eddy musicals too probably because my mum loved the musicals, but I have such fond memories of all those classics and nowadays the kids wouldn't dream of watching them.
I remember one Sunday morning I put on some Strouss Waltze music because I am very fond of the classical music and my son, who was still asleep in bed got up and said "Please turn that Cr*p off, how can I sleep with all that racket going and then went back to his room and put on his heavy metal rock music, I have to say there is no comparison what so ever.

I was a huge Fabian fan, too. I was president of one of his fan clubs!!

Also, a Paul Anka fan. My dad got tickets to the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars show at our Coliseum and took a friend and me. We were on the front row.... Paul Anka was the headliner and I was in total heaven... screaming with the rest of the fans.... I still have the pictures!

What I remember, and have told my 14 year old granddaughter about, is my brothers and I leaving the house summer mornings after breakfast and not having to show up again until lunchtime. We were free to roam and play and explore (AND get in trouble, too!) the whole summer. I broke my arm falling out of a chinaberry tree that we all loved to climb to get to the roofs of the garages that were at the end of each block of on-base housing at Ft. Bragg.

We would play games, form little "clubs", get a soda for a nickel if we were rich but we usually didn't have any money to spend whatsoever unless we had managed to do a special chore and save some.

We always had a car that I remember and we all got out to wash it on Saturday and that turned into play-time with my Dad. We got together with other families to go pick fresh tomatoes or go crabbing at the beach and then come home and have a feast.

My granddaughter told me she wishes she lived like that!

Wow that would be great K/C I would love to see them too.
Talk about tree climbing, that was also one of my fortes too, my favorite was to sit up in the apricot tree and eat all the sweet ones at the top, and those I couldn't eat because the birds had had their fair share of them I would bombard at who ever was unfortunate enough to walk around the side of the house.
I also remember having my 2/6d pocket money which is equivilent to 25c these days, and going to a matinee at the local movie house which we called the bughouse and having enough to buy my ticket and a drink and a great big bag of jaffas, a round red candy ball filled with orange flavored chocolate, and when I got too sick from gorging myself I would proceed to roll them down the aisleway which was made of wood, no carpet in this place, and make a good noise to disrupt the show. I don't think half the kids back then ever watched the movie, they either chucked stuff at eachother or the older kids were busy necking in the back stalls. They often were the targets of our suplus jaffas too.

Ya know if I told you all the half of it from when I was a kid you would all know what a rotta I truly was, but it was all innocent fun, but I was always the one in trouble because of my fun loving antics as a child, my mother always said she had 4 boys all rolled into one with me and I had two older brothers too, who by the way always said "Mum please send her back and get another one"

That was me
You know I had so many dolls and mum had a beautuful drop side dolls cot made for me to play with, well those dolls never got touched and were almost brand new when I had my daughter so I gave them to her, and guess what? She just looked at them and continued pinching her brother's cars and trucks, now I wonder where she enherited that from

I can remember the rotary dialed telephone. I was just a kid but I remember we also had a party line. My brothers and I would try to pick the phone up and listen in on other people's calls. Almost always got caught. I can remember we would also ride our bicycles all over the neighbor and not come in until after dark. Nothing to worry about in those days. We had air conditioning but we also had an attic fan in the hallway. That was so neat going to sleep with the windows open and the attic fan on. We didn't get a color television until 1967. And can you believe it...it DID NOT have a remote! No worries back then....

Yes, we had an attic fan, too, in the house that didn't have A/C. We finally got central A/C when we moved in 1962. It was probably 1970 before I had a TV with remote. Oh yes.... I remember party lines!! I had forgotten about that. We had one for a short time and I remember being very interested in wanting to listen in!

Everyone seems to have such wonderful memories of the good old days!!!

Can anyone remember BEFORE rotary dials when the operator use to answer when you picked up the phone and say "Number please" then you would tell her
something like 4369R ?
Now that will take you back...ha ha. I can 'almost' remember that...LOL
And you are all right...we use to be able to play all day and not worry about someone grabbing us or hurting any of us.
Do you remember the first OLEO??? It was basically a plastic container of lard that had a little 'bubble' of yellow on it and you would squeeze the bubble and it would go into the lard, then you would massage the bag and 'Viola'...oleo (or margarine, whichever you like).
And the candy cigarettes, little parafin bottles with sweet liquid in them, and 'Nehi" soda pop?
Ok, your
turn.

YES! I remember the candy cigs and the little "coke" bottles that had the sweet liquid in them. There was a little candy store around the corner and it was such fun going in there to get that stuff. Plus licorice strings and the wax lips.

Yes, I remember party lines and also only having to dial 4 numbers to make a local call :D How about the milk man....Ours delivered our milk in one of those white trucks along with eggs and cheese
I remember the candy you are talking about, and I use to get a lot of the "penney" candy at our general store when I was a kid. We also had such a small town that my first and second grade class were in the same room
How about the cars...I remember my sister learning to drive my Dad's Rambler
Oh, times were so much simpler and easy going back then. We had our local drug store that had the soda fountain counter in it and I would go after school to get my Vanilla ice cream soda...if I didn't have enough money Marie the owner knew everyone in town and just told me to bring the rest of the money later. She also used to patch me up after a fall on my way home from school, I was always falling and hurting my knees. She would bring out the iodine stuff( I forget how to spell it) and put a bandaide on my knee and off I went. My Grandmother owned a large farm and never updated the house, so she had....an out house, wood burning stove etc. Boy was that out house chilly in the cold weather
