For those of you that don't know Oreo she is my parents dog. She will be 15 in January.

Last Decemeber she had surgery to remove some fatty tumors and survived the surgery but the recovery almost killed her. She stopped eating for like a week. She was diagnosed with the beginning stages of heart and kidney failure. She has been doing pretty good since then on a prescription dog food.

My mom called me today to tell me that Oreo throw up some white foam bile 5 times this morning. When she let her out to go potty she stood and stared at the tree for few minutes and then kind of fell/laid down and didn't move. My mom thought she was dead. I guess after a few minutes Oreo was fine but couldn't get in the house. That part isn't uncommon so my mom tied her up outside until my dad got home a half hour later. My dad said that oreo did the laying down not moving thing a number of times today. I just talked to my mom a few minutes ago and she said Oreo keeps passing like she is in pain. She won't lay down and when she does she has a hard time breathing.

My mom is going to call the vet in the morning and see what she says. We don't want to put her to sleep but if her quality of life is going to be bad or she is going to be in pain we will do it. If the vet suggests this I'm going to postpone Nikki's sugery a few weeks and head home on Thursday night (I'm scheduled to have off Friday).

I'm so sorry to hear of Oreo's problems. Having had the experience more than once of making that decision for an elderly pet, I can really feel for you and your parents.
I think you are wise to go home to be with your parents.

Kristi, I'm so sorry for what you and your family are going through right now. We had to make the same decision 2 years ago with my 18 year old Benji. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. It is so sad when we are faced
with decisions of what one has to do when it comes to our
4 legged family members. I wish you and Oreo and your parents the
best.

I still don't understand why our pets can't have a longer life span.

I am so sorry about Oreo's failing health.. This is never easy.
I can only say that as difficult as it is.. if the vet advises that things are no longer "fixable" and that dreadful decision must be made....there is an odd comfort in knowing you can help them avoid pain and discomfort.
I so feared I'd not be able to let Missy go when things got so they were no longer treatable.. but when I actually saw her in discomfort and she was no longer enjoying life.. I felt it was a final 'gift" I could give her.. to help her escape.
Just follow your hearts ... it will tell you what is in the best interest for Oreo.

I pray things can be managed for Oreo so she may have more quality time.

My mom called the vet and made an appointment to have her looked at. Oreo's regular vet isn't in this morning so she decided not to wait until this afternoon and to make an appointment with the other vet.

When the Time Comes

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this--the last battle--can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

So sorry to hear about Oreo. I was sitting here trying not to cry and then I read the poem. That did me in. I can't imagine having to go through that. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and Oreo.

I am so very sorry that Oreo is not well, both you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
I know what you are going through with your decision as I too have been there on a number of occasions, it is never an easy decisoin to make but it is the true love for our little friend that helps us through because the last thing we want to see is our little loved one suffering.
I do hope this is not the case, but if so we are all here for you at this very sad time

My younger brother (he's 19) has been in denial for years that one day we might have to make a decision on wheather or not to put oreo to sleep. Last night my mom had to talk to him to make sure he realized that it might be time to think about it. She said he was crying last night and then this morning he was laying on the floor with oreo crying.

Poor guy! He has 3 midterms today too and i think a couple more tomorrow.

Oh that is so heartbreaking. I'm sure its very tough on your brother. I'm so sorry. Even though you know deep in your heart that you are doing the right thing, the loss of your beloved pet is so hard to deal with. Please let us know how your mom makes out at the vet today. I have you& your family & Oreo in my thoughts and prayers.
