Help, help, help !!!

Little man Tucker is sure peeing a lot. Here's what is going on.

He has a 2 foot by 4 foot in the office where my hubby is most of the day. He also has his crate in the same room. Lots of time he is free to run in the room while my husband works. He has plenty of toys and things to do.

Problem #1....if hubby leaves the room Tucker will PEE to get back at him for leaving. YES, hubby takes him out often.

Problem #2.... I come home, play with him, fix dinner, then put Tucker in his xpen while we eat. PEE again.

Problem #3....if we are on the phone......... you guessed it, He will PEE

We have had him to the Vet and he is healtly so that is not it.

He does have a water bottle in his x-pen so can drink all day long.

Tucker is 4.2 lbs and drinks one full bottle a day. The bottle holds 8 1/2 ozs. Do we need to limit his water?

I can't tell if : 1. it's too much water
2. he is making his spot
3. he is getting back at us for not giving him our full attention

Connie, I am one of those who believe that dogs don't do things out of spite. I just don't think they have that capacity. It sounds like he needs to have less freedom and maybe you need to start over on potty training.

I would let him drink all the water he wants.

I have read too that dogs dont do things out of spite. I dont know what to say about the peeing for the other reasons though. Rex will hold it and sometimes when we are gone and get home and take him out he has held enough to pee a river with a pond at the end. Maybe starting over potty training and giving treats when he does it in the right place is the way to go. Good luck!

I'll tell you that hit me like a ton of bricks up side the head. I knew that!!!!

For some reason in my mind the xpen was being confined.

What is it about these little guys that make you lose your mind.

I keep forgetting my dog training things. Of course I was doing it all wrong. Thing is I know better.

Either I have lost my mind due to age or this little guy has caused me to forget he does need to be taught things including manners.

Next time give me a swift kind on my back side.

1. NEVER limit a dog's water intake unless directed to do so by a veterinarian. Personally, I think water bottles are fine for travel, but dogs cannot get enough out of them to get a good drink.

2. Dogs don't pee out of spite.

3. It sounds to me like he is not house trained - he doesn't know how to hold it. I would go back to square one with him. If you are not actively watching him, crate him or leash him to you. No free run of rooms or larger spaces. Be consistent in rewarding him for going in the right place. Put him on a schedule for going outside.

Connie, fiquring these little ones are alittle tough, isn't it? A friend of mine just got a toy poodle a few weeks ago and at 16 weeks, that little squirt hasn't had an accident in 2 weeks!! She said it was easier training him than both of her kids!! :new_Eyecrazy: It left me wondering what am I doing wrong or what is Abbey not getting.

First thing I did was forget about having her go on the pee pad (I was using this on rainy days). I had switched out her bed in her crate for a towel thinking this would help break her at nighttime - she just confused the towel with a pee pad! Now, I just leave a pee pad in her crate (I have a crate big enough for a german shepard), and bed in the front. She goes where she's supposed to go and I just clean up every morning. (I am going to try to tackle breaking her of this too though)

This is the schedule I follow on rainy days (and when I crate trained her in the begginning):
7 am Take puppy out to potty
7:15 supervised play for a few minutes. Cuddles. Breakfast... food down for 20 minutes. Back out to potty. Supervised play for a few more minutes. Cuddles. Back in crate for 1-2 hours.
9-10 am Outside on leash. play supervised. Cuddles. Snack. Back to crate until 12
12:00 Potty....Lunch...20 minutes. Repeat breakfast procedure
12:45 Back in crate till 2:00. Repeat morning procedure
3:00 Potty... Play...Cuddles...Snack
4:00 Back in crate until supper. Repeat... Repeat...Repeat

I found leashing her to me on rainy days VERY helpful also, but when I have things to get done this is a better routine. If she still has an accident, I take her outside anyways so she knows she's going out in the rain either way.

Hope this helps! If you have any suggestions on breaking her at bedtime let me know - I guess I just feel so quilty about making her hold it all night!!

I am thinking about getting "WIZ DOG" but need everyone's input on doing it. We have Tucker's pee pads in the garage now. He uses them but now doesn't seem to mind peeing on his blankets in his crate.

I tried something different today. I got a soft baby blanket instead of a towel. We left the house at 11:30 this morning and got back at 6:00pm. WOW he didn't go in his crate. We were so excited. I took him out and he peed a river on the pee pad in the garage he even took a step and peed somemore.

I brought him in and buckled him to me and gave him dinner. Sitting down and loging in to SM while he ate. Just before I got on the site I looked down at my feet and there was ANOTHER RIVER.!!!!!!!!!!

It has me wondering that he doesn't mind stepping in pee so why not just do it anywhere. I am thinking if I can keep his feet out of pee maybe he will change his toon and be more gentleman like.

Ok guys, WIZ DOG? If yes, what size......... If no what do you suggest.

There is NO way my hubby will take Tucker out in the snon

Just a response on the wiz dog.....I bought the yogi potty for Emma (I think its basically the same thing as the wiz dog) - and I love it! I saw someone on this site write about it so I ordered it before I got her - it was $20. (I use a litter box with my havanese but decided to try something different with a maltese because she's smaller.) Emma had no problem immediately going on it- she can't destroy the wee wee pads and she doesn't have to walk through wet urine (occasionally, during the day I'll just wipe the top with a lysol wipe so its clean) - when she poops I immediately pick it up with a tissue and flush it but it doesn't get caught in the grate. When I change the pad, I just rinse the top grate. Its so easy. I have her in an x-pen with her crate w/ a towel in it, food/water, a place to play and the potty - she's doing great. When she's running around the house, I can tell if she has to go because she'll sniff around and sometimes she'll run back on her own but sometimes I need to remind her and shuffle her in the right direction to the potty. She is so much easier than my havanese was!

Hi Connie,

I think the Wizdog is a great concept but overpriced! The price is 39.95? plus 9.15 for shipping to VA. So $49.09 will be charged to your card. They used to have a different grid that some people shared was easier on their paws but some dogs chewed it so now they replaced it with plaskolite egg crate.

You can make your own with a replacement pan from dog.com

The 24" inches pan takes 5 less inches of floor space (since the rim is not as wide as the wizdog's) but you only lose 1 inch in length of elimination space. I think it is $10.99 For this size you can use the standard Nature's Miracle pads. However, the pans from Petmate are 23 x 17 1/2 which actually gives you 2 inches more in width of elimination space. I posted the dog.com ones because they are cheaper.

The 30" inches pan takes one less inch (width) of floor space and gives you 2 inches in the width and 4 1/2 inches lengthwise more elimination space. (I think this size is $14.00)

They even have a 36" one that is the perfect size for the Comfort Shape 23 x 36 inch pads they sell at Sams (120 pads for $23.00)

A Plaskolite egg crate (found in lighting panels section of Lowes or Home Depot) is $10.57 for a 24" x 48" panel.


Whether you order the wizdog product online or make your own potty pan, I really liked the concept. Before I learned about the wizdog I had been using cat litter pans from Group One. I posted pics on my gallery so you can see the development of the concept.

My work hours can be unpredictable and it allows me to let the dogs have the run of the kitchen and laundryroom (pan is in the laundryroom). The grid helps in keeping their feet dry and also I think that after a while they associate the feeling of the grid with the potty pan.

I wish I had known about it when I got the first maltese. I am still working on training him to go on it (Every now and then he still has accidents but luckily for me on the ceramic floor, never on carpet! wub.gif ). He can hold pee forever in hopes I take him outside. However he goes #2 reliably on it no problem. They are both on schedule so their #2 are morning and evening 6:30 am/pm. I placed another one in the garage and let them go there in the morning so there won't be any smell in the house.

On weekends when I am home I place newspaper on top of the pad under the grid and they go on it. Again, they get nothing in their paws and it is easier to pick up after paper has absorbed the liquid.

As the weather is getting chillier, I cannot tell you enough how glad I am dogs can be used to use a "litter" pan.


How is Tucker trained? Outdoors only?

If he goes on the pads inside, place the pad in the tray in the elimination room and after a few days put the grid on. He will catch on fast

PROS of making your own:

In my mind making your own gives you a tray that holds the grid in better than the wizdog. I like to stack a few pads so I do not have to go searching for the supplies when all I want to do is pull the top one off, the sides of the pan hold them great.

You can customize the size to your dog's space needs.

It is cheaper.

Tray plastic is sturdier than Wizdog.


CON:

You have to buy the eggcrate at Lowes or Home Depot and use pliers to custom size it.



The PRO of WIZDOG:

It comes all ready in a box.

The CONS:

It is $49 for a 15 1/2 x 23 elimination space.
The plastic is real flimsy. Edge is not high enough at all so all you can place is one pad or newspaper. At least the one I got it seems like the grid floats on top.

Thanks to mpd and the rest of you we made out own. We went to The Home Depot and got one of the square trays you sit a washing machine in. Then we went to lighting and got the egg crate.

We plan on cutting it and setting it up tonight. Perfect for the garage.

Tucker is doing great with the not peeing in the crate. I had been putting towels in the crate and he would pee on them. I bought some very soft baby blankets and he doesn't pee on them. Guess the towels were to scratchy. LOL

He is doing much better now. He actually seems to much happier being confind more.

connie i had maxi 's urine tested last week because he also pee's alot
so i finally took him in i think that the reason they do this is because we have the wee wee pads and we take them out which kind of doesnt teach them to control
i just wanted to give maxi the opportunity to go to the bathroom when he felt like he had to go verses my neighbors who have there sister cockapoo's trained to go out 3 times a day and that all they go to the bathroom
maxi goes through about 50 wee wee'sa week

Here are pictures of chlsey on the Wizdog it works great for us. I do wish we had two and when we move in the new home I might try to make one if i'm in the mode. If I'm lazy I will just by an other. I think they shoudl make them in different sizes. I like the fact that it is easy to clean. And I can hide it when she is not using it.
for us the grid fit snug with the wee pad inside. I just leave the edges hanging over ..
No issuse and chelsey does not miss the pad.

Question for those that use this in the garage. do you have a dogie door on your garage. Other issue I heard mice like the smell f urine. Do any of you have issuse with this in the garage. I'm only asking as I'm thinking of this as an option for our new home if the grade permits we will have a indoor garage door. But I don't want any kind of rodens to be encurage to come to our home. Pictures of your garage setup would be great. Thanks

This sounds more like separation anxiety rather than potty issues. Even one minute can be a long time for some dogs to be alone. That would be the area to work on, not so much the potty issue.
