Hi Everyone! I just adopted an adorable, wonderful rescue Maltese, about 4 years old. I would like to get pet insurance for her. I am interested in hearing about experiences with pet insurance from people who have an insurance plan.

I would very much appreciate hearing about which pet insurance you have, your experience with the coverage (what's covered, deductible, and maximum amounts reimbursed), cost, and overall experience with the company including paying claims.

I've looked at so many and it can be confusing and frustrating! Many do not cover patella issues or ACL surgery which is important with Maltese. Also, many do not cover conditions that are congenital or hereditary with the breed as they consider them to be preexisting. Thank you so much!

Congrats on the rescue. I have healthy paws - they were good in covering emergency treatment for Lucky's cancer but not his liver shunt. Most insurances are good for covering injuries and accidents, it is illnesses that can get trickier, and in part it depends on how the vet writes it up. Lucky had an infection but the vet could not definitely determine the cause and the claim was denied.

Personally I find the whole insurance environment confusing, both for me and for Casper. Hopefully those with more experience will chime in.

Thanks so much for your reply and for the congrats! I too find the insurance industry confusing and they don't do anything to make it any easier. You really have to read the fine print - and there is a lot of it too. I agree - how the vet writes it up can make a big difference.

I have Pet's Best Insurance and have only used it twice. Both times they paid what was in the policy, (office visit, bloodwork and medication). My only complaint was that payment took a while but they did send emails to let me know that they were working on it.

Forbes on line had an article recently comparing quite a few pet insurance policies. I didn't read very much of it because 2 out of my 3 dogs are probably "senior" enough that the premiums would not be worth it. But it could be of interest to you. I believe it was on line just within the last week.

Someone I met at the veterinary oncologists a few years ago had Nationwide, and said it enabled him to treat his labrador and save his life. He said the treatment would have been so expensive that he could not have done it, but Nationwide paid for everything.
