Please share your experiences with these shops:

Perfect Pets (Far Rockaway, NY)
Puppy Boutique (Brooklyn, NY)
Puppy Paradise (Brooklyn, NY)

I didn't see any of the above listed as a puppy mills (link provided in other threads). I'd like to hear the good, bad, and ugly stories you'd care to share about the above places. Would you recommend them to others?

Thanks so much.

As my finding a breeder dilemna is draining me, these 3 locations may be my only option.

Don't have time to get into it now but I would highly recommend not getting a puppy from a pet store. Do a search on the internet and you will come across a lot of articles describing why you shouldn't get one from a pet store. For the same price you pay at a petstore you can get a healthy puppy from a breeder.

As I said to you in a private email - the Puppy Boutique sells puppy mill puppies. They lied to me outright - and when I did a search for my Teddy's origins he was breed in a puppy mill in Missouri where 69 breeding females were located...if you would like I can send you the information I was given on where he came from when I get back to work tommorrow...I was heartsick as was Denise of DeniseChico as she too purchased from them.

Teddy is as healthy as he can be, but it is largely because I have taken a very aggressive stance with him...I feed him all natural food because he is allergic to both chicken and beef...I only give him bottled water so he does not have tear stains. His bite is totally off - however 2 days ago the Vet said his teeth are clean and beautiful...I brush them every day. His eyes do not have the typical black ring...it only is on about a third. He is 7 lbs but I truly beleive I got really lucky with that. Teddy also is the sweetest thing I have ever met...and I am glad that I got him because I do believe that God blessed me with him for a purpose...but knowing what I know now...I would never purchase another pup from the Puppy Boutique...No they do not have a USDA number...only because they themselves do not sell to other retailers....they purchase from places that have USDA numbers and then sell to us...unsuspecting people who believe they are on the up and up because they don't have a USDA number....they lied to me about the way Teddy was raised and I fell for it...because I thought I had done the right research....I know better now.

Please don't make the same mistake..It is so very hard to say to you not to buy there because Teddy is the light of my world and I got him from there...but I also worry about him every single day....he could be a time bomb waiting to go off...the vet checks him out each and every time...because she too beleives he is a time bomb....I love him and would die for him and I thank God every day for him as well...but I paid good money for him because I was told one thing....and I got something totally different.

Sorry, I seem to be rambling but this is so close to my heart.

You may want to PM Saltymalty. She lives in New Jersey and has a great Malt and was happy with her breeder. Maybe she can refer you .....

Any place that sells pups that they didn't breed themselves is a broker. And almost always it is a puppymill that sells to brokers..... certainly responsible breeders do not sell to pet stores.... so... you need to find a good breeder. I bet you can get some good referrals here on SM.

The problem with pet shop puppies is that just because they don't get sick or die right away doesn't mean they are healthy.

99% of pet shop puppies come from puppy mills. Maltese are prone to liver shunts, MVD, luxating patellas, GME, white shaker syndrome, etc. The gene for these diseases is passed from generation to generation and dogs should be carefully screened for genetic disease before being bred. Puppy mills don't do this and there is a very high risk that a pet shop/puppy mill puppy will carry these "genetic times bombs".

Sometimes it is obvious early on that a dog isn't healthy. Often it's that first bloodwork before spaying or neutering that shows abnormal liver values. Sometimes, like with my Lady, a dog can seem to be very healthy for years until those time bombs start going off.

Another problem with pet shop puppies is that often they grow up to not look much like the breed they are supposed to be. It is not uncommon for pet shop puppies to grow larger than the standard 4-7 pounds (sometimes into the teens!) or have curly coats, etc. Every breed has a standard and a good breeder will breed dogs that are as close to perfect as possible in order to produce puppies close to the standard. Puppy mills breed anything, even mix a larger breed like a Bichon in, with no regard for producing puppies close to the standard. That's why many pet shop puppies are registered with the CKC, ACA or some of the other "alternative" registries instead of the AKC. There is no real guarentee a puppy mill/pet shop puppy is really even purebred.

It really is temping BUT...

My Cam was from a petstore and died at 16 weeks old--we don't know from what--we didn't want to pay another $500 and possibly into the $1000's for an autopsy because mainly we wanted to get another pup as soon as we could to ease the pain and trauma that we all went through--mainly my small children--and money is somewhat tight these days. Sad that it came down to that, unfortunately. Plus after all that money the results STILL could have been inconclusive. By observation, the vet was convinced that it was either a very high toxin (which to me is unlikely b/c I have small kids and I watch them all like hawks) or something congenital.

I stopped in the petstore last night--I had to take a quick run to the mall to pick up something and my kids came and they wanted to look at the puppies (they don't know any better) in the pet store. There was a beautiful male malt there--the cutest one I've seen...THEN I noticed that it's front, right leg was shaved...alarms on top of alarms went off in my head right away--I asked the sales associate about it and, in the ditsy-ist voice she said "oh...I don't know...they probably had to give him some intraveinus (sp?) fluids or something..." ??????? I wanted to sock her right then...anyway...sounds like you've heard it all in this thread already, but wanted to share my experiences as well...best of luck in your pursuit....

Yup, there are no guarentees because you REALLY don't know where they truly came from and what they have gone through up until you buy them (read my post I just posted)...so sad......

Violet's Mom-- I am happy to hear that you have decided not to purchase from a pet store!!!!
You will find your baby soon, I know it.

I feel so strongly about this, I want to post my response in case someone else might read it, and learn from it...

I will not even walk into a pet shop, I will not buy anything from a store that sells animals. Nope, won't do it. I will not have my money in any way support a business that supports puppy mills.

It is irresponsible for anyone to purchase a pet from a pet shop--- the ONLY way puppy mills will be shut down is if they stop making money. EVERY single time a puppy is purchased at a pet store it is adding to the problem. PLEASE do not be part of the problem. PLEASE think of all the parents of that puppy stuck in a tiny cage, never being held or loved, covered in urine, and-- darn I can't even go on.

All that- and I didn't even mention how poorly the puppies are treated once they are at the store.

Deanna, you've hit the nail on the head. Just don't even go into pet stores to begin with. Don't give any business that makes a profit off the misery of animals one dime of your money even if it is just for a chew toy.

Only when these places stop profitting will we have a chance of shutting the mills down.

If you don't ever go into one of those stores, you won't be tempted to "rescue" a puppy. Just remember if you do, you have helped to keep this horrible industry going. By emptying a cage, you have just guarenteed that another puppy will replace the one you just bought and the cycle of abuse will contine.

no, i wouldnt recommend them

prisoners of greed

I have to reply to this....I would never buy a puppy from a pet store and would never recommend that anyone else do so. Most stores get their pups from two major suppliers, who by the way are big AKC supporters and advertise so (Hunte corp. and Honeydew...if you see these names on papers...RUN). The only way most individually owned pet stores survive is by selling puppies...that is why we closed our store. We chose to close and took a HUGE loss rather than compromise our principles.

That being said...you cannot believe everything you read on prisonersofgreed!!! My daughter and I had a small pet supply store (now closed) and we are listed on that site as "puppybrokers" because we had a USDA license...we did NOT sell puppies...my daughter has a bio degree, has worked at the zoo, and several vets and wanted to be able to go into the schools and educate children how to love and properly care for animals. In order to do this in Va she had to be licensed. We spent most of our time in the store trying to educate people about puppymills...we were asked on a daily basis to sell pups...but refused to do so! Do you think for one minute that "prisonersofgreed" cared what we did with the certification from the USDA...NO...they simply go down the list and anyone licensed by the USDA is automatically a "puppybroker". So...my opinion of them is not much!!! I have tried numerous times to contact them to have our name removed and the only contact info available is if you want to make a "contribution to their cause".
Thanks for allowing me to rant...everytime I think of that stupid list I get mad!!!

Here is another slant on this from a well respected member of this forum. I took the liberty to do a copy/paste of MaryH's post on this same topic from a previous thread.

you have done a fabulous job putting together a truly wonderful forum.

I wanted to share some insight on a couple of areas mentioned in this thread but, first, a bit about me and my dogs. I've been deeply involved in Maltese rescue for many years, having adopted from and worked with various rescue organizations through the years. All of my rescues have received their Canine Good Citizen titles. One has trained and titled in Obedience. One is a certified therapy dog. One is training in Agility. One is training in Rally. And my one "non-Rescue" was purchased as a puppy from a reputable breeder. I showed and finished him to his Championship in conformation and we are now training in Rally. Many of you on this forum know me, know my dogs, and know of my passion for helping the little ones in need. Enough about me and my dogs ....

USDA List - Unfortunately there is much misperception about this list. Yes, you can search and get information about a particular breeder on the list if that particular breeder has been USDA inspected. But, NO, you cannot assume that every breeder on the USDA list is a puppymill, a high volume breeder, or even a backyard breeder. In my state, Massachusetts, dog ownership limits are set by individual cities and towns. And in my town, if I were to exceed the set limit, I would have to apply for a non-commercial kennel license, even though I am not breeding or operating any sort of kennel, and would have to provide justification for the number of dogs I own and open my home to Board of Health inspection. In many states, however, including some of those listed by the HSUS as the largest puppymill states in the country, dog limits and breeder/kennel licenses are not regulated at the local or state level. Instead, some of these states require that if you own more than "X" number of dogs or breed more than "X" number of litters you must have a USDA license. So if someone living in one of these states feels a responsibility to abide by the law they apply for a USDA license, despite the fact that the USDA may not require it. That automatically puts the breeder on the USDA list and, sadly, lumps many good, loving, responsible individuals in with what are commonly perceived as puppymills.

AKC Inspections - Anyone who breeds and registers with the AKC 7 or more litters per year is automatically put on the AKC radar screen for inspection. BUT, this does not mean that only these breeders get inspected. Anyone who registers even one litter with the AKC can be subject to inspection.

My advice to anyone looking to purchase a puppy is to use all of the information here and everywhere else on the internet as a research tool. I could (and do) talk until I'm blue in the face about why I would not purchase a puppy from a pet shop. And because I'm a "touchy feely" kind of person I wanted to see puppies and their environment before making a commitment. So use your head. You are purchasing a living being and are (or should be) making a lifetime commitment to his or her well-being.

I am so relieved that you have changed your mind and are not getting a Maltese at a pet store
I have tried so hard to get the word out to family and friends, but people ( the ones I know) just don't listen
I talked about puppymills and all the bad things that go along with pet stores to my SIL for almost 3 years because she wanted to get a Pug for the kids. In the end she went with the quickest route and bought one from a pet store any way!!!!!! She even got a discount because the puppy had a hernia
She has had him for 6 months or so and is talking about getting rid of him because she cannot train him
I tried to tell her about pet store puppies being so much harder usually than one from a breeder to potty train and now the poor little guy may end up in a rescue shelter
He is the cutest little Pug too. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for reading up on puppymills and not getting your puppy from a pet store
