How slowly do you introduce the food? Could you please walk me through the "steps" on how to switch from dry dog food to home cooked meals? I read the Strombeck book but I don't recall reading about this. Thanks!

Kristi,I think you have to look to your babies for this answer.Do they have senistive tummys? I would say start out with a small amt. each day plus their kibble. If they seem to tolerate it well just keep decreasing the amt. of kibble you give them. One other thing though,do not let the homecooked food set out for longer than an hour if they dont eat it.Either put it in the frig& reheat it later or throw it away.I would also start them out on turkey first and if they do ok on it with no problems then I would go with the others.leanbeef, chic etc.Cottage cheese, yogurt are good also.

Nikki seems to be more sensitive then Lexi. Now I just have to figure out how to keep them from eating each others food. Lexi keeps eating Nikki's food and is getting fat. I can barely feel her ribs. I can't wait until they can both eat the same food!

Before I started home-cooking for Pico I had been giving him cottage cheese, sweet potato, and bits of veggies and cutting back on his canned food, but not his dry.

Then I just switched from canned to my recipe and watched a transformation from "ho-hum-I'll-eat-it-when-I'm-starving" to "MMMmmmm-this-is-tasty-Mom!" and "Isn't-it-dinnertime-yet?".

i thought he gave a few suggestions? i just remember that people actually fast their dogs---which is really messed up.

in barkers grub...they say to gradually change their food.

with me---i just started them on bland chicken and rice (i did the same with jongee). our dogs were totally fine, i think jongee had soft poo for about a week. not diahrea...but just soft poo. so make sure the sanitary cut is really good. LOL

so yeah, bland chicken and rice and wait till her stomach adjusts...and SLOWLY add the veggies. i'd start off with gerber stuff---cuz its watered down.

Lexi's Mom,

I too started slow in that I had been giving Teddy fruit in the morning and leaving his dry kibble out for him...I then started adding a protien such as yogurt or cottage cheese in the morning...still leaving the kibble. Once I started to cook dinner for him, I had already incorporated some veggies in the morning, asparagus, green beans, etc. so it was just a matter of getting another home cooked meal once I started at night. I still kept giving kibble but he stopped eating that pretty much right away. Teddy loves his natural food and has not even snacked on kibble since we first started...he was never a gobble down kind of eater...still is not. He looks at what I give him every day and looks up as to say thanks and then takes his time eating...sometimes he will leave some and sometimes I have to actually start giving him a couple bites by hand to start him to eating.

Susan
