Rabies Vaccine

I have been reading a great book by Chiclet T. Dog (a Maltese) and her mom, Jan Rasmusen. The book is basically about dog care but also talks about vaccines and their overuse. Does anyone know if a titer can be done for the rabies vaccine? I know that there are laws that require our poor furballs to endure the torture of receiving this vaccine on a regular basis but I was curious to see if anyone knew about the titer. Thanks to you all for any information.

Dr. Jean Dodds does rabies titer testing, but as far as I know, no state accepts it in lieu of the vaccination. Some states allow for medical exemptions.

You can pretty much titer for any of the usual vaccine culprits, but the law is the law (I'd consider myself lucky if I only had to rabies vaccinate every 3 years cuz it's annually here....)unless you acquire a waiver from your vet, but even that has its limitations and special caveats. It just sucks, doesn't it?
Just remember if you get a waiver from the vaccine and your dog either bites someone or is exposed to rabies, he will have to be quarantined according to the laws of your state, possibly even euthanized to be tested immediately.
Thank you!

Thank you for your input. The more I read about this stuff, the angier I get. Please don't get me wrong when I say this because I love our country dearly, but it angers me that our goverment often forces us to vaccinate unnecessarily only for the welfare of the pharmaceutical companies and NOT necessarily for the welfare our precious babies who look to us to care for them and keep them healthy. We are forced by law to subject their tiny little bodies to yearly (in some areas) vaccines that can cause more damage than good for the sole purpose of filling the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and our lawmakers. My apologies if I have offended anyone with my opinions as I sometimes get carried away. I just want what is best for my babies and I am sure you all do as well. I just don't liked to be forced into doing something that I feel is not necessarily a healthy option for the ones that I love. Thank you for reading this and thank you for your comments, too! Hugs to all your furbabies! Bless them all!

It is important to understand what a serious disease rabies is. It's not all about big pharma making $$$$. Rabies presents a big risk to humans, too.

I fully support the work the Rabies Challenge Fund is doing. We need to find out just how long these vaccines last so the health of our pets can be protected without compromising public safety.

:goodpost: Good point Ladysmom!
Ladysmom....thank you. I totally agree with you. Rabies is a deadly disease, and yes it not only affects our pets but us humans as well. I am just frustrated by the many lies we have been told by the government and pharmaceuticals, not only where our beloved pets are concerned, but us human beings, too. Deadly drugs have been sold as safe and then taken off the market a year or two later because they turned out to deadly. I think we should be titering our pets to make sure they indeed need the vaccinations that we are being told they require on a yearly or a 3-year basis. Personally, I think it would be great as an option if nothing else.

Thank you for sending that Rabies Challenge Fund site. I am going to check it out and if there is a way, maybe even get involved somehow. Thank you again!
I totally agree about pharmaceutical companies. It's all about profit. Yes there are some dedicated researchers out there, but once they get into the system, it's all about getting funding.

If more vets made the connection between vaccinations and chronic health issues like allergies, ear infections, IBD, etc. maybe more studies would be done.

If they were truly interested in keeping dogs healthy why haven't they figured out a way to give the vaccinations according to weight/size by now?

I'd better sign off now, as I feel a rant coming on.
