Re Dying Jeans...

1516 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Toby's Mom
I have some jeans that I bought right around the beginning of the year (very dark blue) and they have already begun to fade terribly.

There is nothing wrong with them, so I was thinking about re dying them. Has anyone ever done this? Would Rit dye work? How does the color look after?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I know what you mean about dark jeans fading, I hate it!

You are supposed to wash dark jeans inside out (usually the washing instructions say so) but I never do so I can only blame myself. I'm not sure about re-dying them.
Never tried it but found something on Google (yep, I lurve to google*) : How to re-dye jeans | eHow.com

I didn't know that! I confess, I never read care labels on jeans. Maybe I should.

Thanks for the link.

I think I am going to try it. I'll let you know how it turns out. The only thing I worry about is it being a weird shade of blue. I think I will try it on an old pair first.
Yes, definitely try it on an old pair first. Honestly I would think they would turn out too bright blue rather than a dark wash but it is worth a shot if the dye isn't too expensive.
I dyed some jeans back in high school (a long long time ago lol)..it was fine. I used RIT dye I'm sure. Just be careful when you wash your dyed jeans- at least for the first couple of times, to wash them alone or else the dye will stain other clothes in the washer with your jeans.
If anyone is interested, I dyed my jeans last week. Oddly enough, the thread didn't dye. That was weird, but I was pleased to see that.

As for the color, I used Rit Dye (denim blue, I think). It came out okay. The color is a little weird for me; it has a lot of violet undertones to it so in bright sunlight you can really see it. The jeans were still semi-dark before I dyed them and I guess they are okay to wear, however, I threw in a pair of hubby's old, very faded jeans. Uhhhhh...the only way I can describe the color is old, man blue--those cheap jeans you buy at Wal-Mart--that color! LOL I guess he'll be wearing them in the garage! LOL

If I were to ever do it again, I would use the same color, just maybe add some black dye to the bath to take out that violet undertone (however, over a few washings it might wash out). Maybe a ratio of 3:1.

So that's my review. It only cost $2.50 so it was worth trying.
