The article didn't give much info but you'd think there had to be a better way.

I found a little more information and it seems that the dog was a friendly dog, was a regular at the dog park and was only playing. This dog was a rescue that came from abuse and had lived with his new family for about 2 years. People that go to the dog park said he was a great dog with no problems. This breaks my heart. :smcry:

I agree with Susan, there had to be a better way to handle this.

If that's the case how horrible for the owners, sounds like they might be able to take some legal actions against the cop, hopefully the cop has to answer for this

Yup, sickening. Yet another reason to keep your dog on a LEASH!!

My dogs play, and it sounds like they are killing each other. That's how they play. Now do I want my Joplin running to a strange dog, on a lead, with an owner, with a gun? Nope.

Seriously, how many of us could just pull out a gun, and shoot a dog, at a minutes notice?

Sounds insane to me. Just because you are an "off duty" police officer, does not give first right to pulling out your gun, before any other options.
I would think he was trained better.

I'm NOT a fan of "Free-Run" dog parks, or beaches. Far too many injuries, and deaths, for my taste.

I blame both parties. You certainly can't have a dog, unleashed, who is playfull, and runs to strange dogs. Also, you should not go to a "Free Run" dog park, and take it for granted, that your dog is on a lead, so all is well with the world. And nope, you don't pull your gun out at the dog park. Good Lord, the bullet could have missed, and killed another dog or kid.

Deb that's why I am not for dog parks. One day or another there is going to be a problem. People go to dog parks thinking it is a good place to socialize your dog. But they see it from their point of view. Did they ever see with the point of view of their dog ? Not all dogs want to socialize with other dogs. I know mine does not. He will tolerate other dogs but he does not care about them. If you go to those parks and want your dog to interact with the other dogs by playing first of all, you don't keep it on a leash. Being on a leash will make the dog feel trapped against the other unleashed dog. And secondly you don't freak out and shoot the other dog because YOU ARE THE ONE FREAKING OUT ! If you are scared to that point that something will happen to your dog, you don't take your dog to a dog park.
