Sketchers Shape Ups?

1948 Views 19 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  majik921
Has anyone tried these? Do they work or even help?

I'm walking more now with the dogs and I'd like to try them, but they are so darn expensive I'm hesitant to spend the money unless I know they work.

Is this just another scam or quick fix scheme that doesn't really work?

I'd be interested in how well these work too.. They sound great, but only if they actually work.
Well my mother has major feet issues and she recently bought a pair and she loves them. She says she can stand and walk for a longer period of time. Also alot of doctors that I work with wear them.
I have a pair and like them. They are mild muscle toners. I like that they help stretch out different muscles than would normally be used when walking in flat shoes (because they have a slightly detectable rocking action you are using muscles you wouldn't use in flat shoes to stabilize yourself). I also feel it in my core area. I paid around $95 for mine from DSW. I give them a thumbs up  (although my husband teases me that I look like I'm wearing moon shoes when I have them on LOL)
I bought them a few months ago and returned them the next day. I hated them! I felt really strange wearing them and they hurt my ankles like crazy. I asked the sales lady when I returned them if people bought these shoes and she told me there are some who love them and some who do not. A lot of mixed reactions. I really felt they were uncomfortable. I wish I didn't cause they made me look taller ! LOL !
Putting any possible "benefits" or "boost" to muscle tone they may or may not give aside, they are absolutely rediculous looking! I would be far too embarassed to go out wearing those even on a walk with the dogs.

I seriously doubt they make any noticeable difference in muscle toning anywhere on your body. I think they are another gimmick item.

I so agree I would also be embarrassed . I run and walk and the best shoe I have ever owned was the Reebok tone for the but and legs, it works...
i have the original MBTs that skechers copied for these and i do like them for walking, altho they are not a quick fix by any means. one reason i like them is that i NEVER get shin splints from walking in them, even going for an extra long (i.e. 5+ miles) after not walking for awhile. on the other hand, my running shoes, which are very good, will always give me shin splints (even when walking) if i haven't walked in awhile.

on a side note: i hate wearing tennis shoes and sneakers. for exercise i regularly do yoga, which is barefoot. :)
I've read sooooo many reviews on them and the consensus is that the cushyness factor is nice and minimal toning benefits. And, of course, you have to MOVE to burn any calories so unless you're doing that, not worth the extra $.

A good pair of walking or running sneaks will cost you the same $ and I think are safer ergonomically. I just have a sneeking suspicion that in coming years people that wore these shape ups will be experiencing foot/knee/hip probs.

Just my 2 cents as someone who is physically active/a runner (although running is mostly on the back burner these days--been crunched for time)
These are a more expensive variation on Earth Shoes. I have several pairs of earth shoes and really like them. They are definitely more challenging to walk in - I always feel my calf muscles working harder. My husband has earth shoes, too. He likes the sneakers. They do help posture but unfortunately don't have any magical butt-reducing properties. I doubt the other ones would either. You can get earth shoes on sale for about $50 sometimes. Zappos has them, too which means free returns if they don't fit.
I've heard that the MBT version (though more expensive) is better because they are stiffer and the Sketcher ones flatten out because it's less stiff, therefore decreasing the effectiveness. I've never heard of the Earth Shoes, yes, Zappos has an AMAZING return policy!! :)
I haven't used the Sketchers, but I have the Reebok Easy Tones which I like because they look like normal sneakers, so I don't feel ridiculous wearing them. Plus, I definitely feel sore after walking longer distances in these (particularly in my calves), where I normally wouldn't. I consider myself very fit, so I wasn't really too optimistic that I'd feel any difference at all.

I guess they use little balance ball type things in the soles, so you're stabilizing constantly.

These are the ones I got:

Consumer Reports has pretty much debunked the claim that they tone muscle BUT anecdotally I have to tell you that as a Nurse I am on my feet all day for hours on end and I wear them EVERY DAY (I have two pair and rotate). I have severe heel pain from plantar fasciatis and these shoes are a miracle. I don't really care how odd they look, they are comfortable.
I have tried them on and they are really comfy, but I'm not sure if they really tone muscles since I only tested them for a few hours.
Ok so having read the replys and doing a lot of online research I decided to go ahead and try a pair. Not because of the muscle toning claims but because of the improved posture.

Almost every review said they were really comfy and actually did improve posture - I've always been a sloucher so I figured it was worth a try.

My 14 year old step-daugher is still :HistericalSmiley: cuz she thinks I look like an idiot.
I looked into buying them also. The way they work is they are off balance so when walking you use different muscles. Since I can trip on plain dirt I decided not to buy them. They have also come up with sandals you just have to have good balance.

That made me smile because it
kinda reminds of the Crocs craze.
My Mother forced me to try them on,
I resisted at first then put them on to placate her.
Now I have them in many colours! :brownbag:
I & DH use the crocs in the house instead of slippers.
Yep, he has coverted to crocs, too! :HistericalSmiley:
I have never tried the Sketchers shape ups, but I do have some Skeetchers sneakers, and I like them.
I read an article a few weeks back about these, in it they were listed as one of the main ways folks are getting swindled out of their money, as in they don't work. But that was just one person's opinion.
