Lately, SM has been running very slowly for me. When I first come here, I get a message in the bottom left corner that the site has been found but the screen remains white for a long time. Navigating through the site is unbearably slow, also. I haven't been posting as much because it is just so slow going to a posting box, etc.

I have a cable modem and all other sites such as Yahoo, Google, Newsweek, and even my company's site, are lightening fast with about a millisecond between clicks from area to area on the site.

I was thinking it was due to my privacy settings since there are a ton of cookies on SM. So, I set my privacy to accept all cookies. I have Ad-Aware spyware and Ad Watch, but even after turning Ad Watch off it still is slow.

Is it slow for you guys and if not, can you think of anything I may have put a check mark by on my settings that would be causing this. ??? Thanks!

I have not had any problems connecting resently, but when i do .. I do a complete shut down and also reset my modem and wirless connections.
Have you given that a try ? The cookes seem like a good idea,
Have you also cleared your cache? This will also release the cookies.. I would make note of any personal passwords you may save on netscape or IE They tend to clear when you do this. You may also want to export your bookmarks or faviorets before you start. Have you taken a look at your proxy setting.

That's all I can think of for now.

I'm on dial up, and I'm having the same problems. It may take as long as five minutes just to get to the new messages from the time I sign on. I only skim over the posts because it takes so long to go from one to another.
I would also appreciate any help here.

hmmm, i'll have to sign on using my back up dial up account later and see what it does

one thing that "may" help on dial up accounts is to change the board settings under "my controls" and set the following to no

Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics?
Do you wish to view images in posts, such as smilies and posted images?
Do you wish to view members avatars when reading topics?

but regardless of that it shouldnt take 5 minutes to do anything

I ended up cancelling my cable service because of speed issues. It seems that whenever there were more than ten households on the "cable line" as Comcast told me, they couldn't guarantee their speed would be much faster than dial-up. I don't know if any of that is true or not, but our cable goes out here all the time. Whenever it rains, whenever it snows, whenever it gets too hot...so I have dial-up. DSL is not available here yet, but they keep promising just a few more months. Could it be a problem with your modem?

I don't think it is the modem because on other sites I can click from page to page with not even a second's lag time... it is instant. Only on SM am I having trouble! I recently installed Ad-Aware on my new computer and I wonder if it has something to do with that. However, I have disabled parts of it so now I don't know what else to do.

first do the following

click start > all programs > accessories > system tools > disk clean up

delete whatever comes up, then

click start > click run > in the box type in the word... command > click ok > a dos screen will pop up > type in... ipconfig /flushdns >and then enter

you will see...
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

shut down your computer and then turn it back on, tell me if that helps any

I had a problem for a few minutes the other night (about a week ago) kept telling me page had expired. I thought I had been banned
but in a few minutes everything was fine. I still do not know what was going on.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. The thing that makes this difficult to trouble shoot is that so far, it is slow only on SM. No other site is slow. When I click on "Reply" to reply to a post, it takes forever to get the posting box, which is especially odd since there are so few graphics on the posting box page. I will continue trying to figure out what is going on..... Tomorrow I may call Road Runner, my ISP, to see if they have any thoughts on what may be causing this.

Hi Scooby, I did the disk clean and defrag. After the defrag, the site seemed to run faster for a few minutes and now it's back to as before. I'm glad I did the defrag though as it needed it and I should try to remember to do it regularly anyway.

The weird thing is that the problem comes and goes. Sometimes I can go to check PMs and it is very fast. Other times it is sooo slow.

K&C's Mom...you can schedule a defrag under your control panel under performance and maintenance.  Have you done a spyware check lately?

Hi, yes I have run a spyware check several times today... hoping that it would solve the problem.

Good idea about scheduling the maintenance... I'm going to do that now! Thanks!
