I'm having trouble with my computer and Fry's Electronics (where I bought the computer and have a paid warranty on it) says there is nothing wrong with it. It freezes up and I have trouble typing on Facebook, delayed letters and sometimes they don't even show. I have to type the same letter over and over...so frustrating. And here on SM I cannot use the smilies that are not shown, meaning the ones you have to click the word MORE. If I do click it, computer freezes. So I am limited on my smilies. My husband says it freezes up when he's on Craig's list. How can they say there is nothing wrong...they said the hard drive and software are fine. I am at a loss. Now I just clicked this smilie and it took a few seconds to show up, when before it would come up instantly. I have a very fast internet service..had them come out and check the lines and I even bought a new modem, changed the keyboard and mouse. Anybody have any ideas? I'm gonna cry. I can type here without a problem, thank goodness, or I'd really freak out! I was without my computer for almost a week while they were checking it out. I have to fix this myself...computer is two years old and I have Windows Vista...I hope someone here knows what it might be...can't think of anything else to do.

oh no Dianne, I was wondering where you were.

How about switching the operating system? I know Windows Vista takes a lot of memory space. My bf's computer used to lag the way you described, but he reformatted his computer(moving the pictures etc to an external hard drive) and then installed Windows 7, and his computer just became fast again!! However, I'm still on Windows Vista and my computer is about 2 years old and it's pretty fast for me. I think it just depends on how much available memory your computer has.

Hi Dianne ... I can understand your frustration with the computer. And, especially when the computer specialists tell us everything is okay ... And, yet we end up having problems anyway.

I am not computer savvy. However, I would not be surprised if other members here might be able to give you some tips.

In the meantime ... Welcome back!

Sometimes the virus program slows you down - you might ask them about it and see if they can recommend a different one. Also, on my Windows 7, Internet Explorer acts the way you describe, so I now use Mozilla. Since I switched to Mozilla I have had no problems with hanging/freezing.

How much memory do you have? Right click on my computer and go to properties. It should give you the info. When I get to the office I will send you some more questions. I work in IT and the desktop guys are great. Do you use virus protection? Are the definitions up to date? You do need to get off of vista there was a lot of problems especially if you installed programs not compatible. If you did not buy the best 2 years ago you might need to upgrade. Yes computer change that much. You really need to get off the modem if it is dialup, especially if you use the Internet a Lot.
Send me a PM with any questions and I'll help you.
I ask simple question because you need to start at the beginning forgive me if you already have checked these thing out.

Dianne, do you only have problems when you're on the Internet? Other programs are running fine? Do you have the same typing issues in Word or any other programs?

Do you use Internet Explorer? If so, can you maybe try uninstalling it and installing the latest version of it? Or maybe try using Mozilla Firefox instead?

I'm not very computer savvy either...but I did struggle A LOT with all PCs I have ever owned. My last PC was a laptop I bought for grad school. Within one year, it completely crashed 4 times. That was when I gave up and bought a Mac...and will never ever ever ever be without a Mac ever in my life!! :)

I'm just trying to brainstorm what the problem could be. Try a different browser, like I said. Also, I know Vista is a HUGE pain (that is what I had) - is there any way you can upgrade your operating system to Windows 7? Sorry, I know computer problems can be extremely frustrating!!

Cindy sounds like she will be able to help you! My husband is "the computer guy" for all his family and friends and I think he would have asked about the memory first thing too. You need a lot of memory to run Vista. Nida's suggestion about updating Internet Explorer or trying Firefox is a good idea as well.

hehehehe!! :chili: YES!!!

Seriously, I am telling you ladies...I always say buying my Macbook Pro was one of the best decisions of my life (okay maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but that's how much I love it!). Can you imagine a very STRESSED out graduate student going crazy with constant computer problems...that was me...I lost so much of my work due to my horrible laptop (it was brand new). Honestly, when I bought my Mac, my life become SO MUCH easier...I havent had a single computer problem since then (it's been almost two years).

Sorry Dianne...I'm going off on a tangent.

Ladies,

I feel the same way about my MacBook Pro and my Ipad.... love them. I was writing my master's thesis on an IBM laptop when it died and I almost lost everything! I switched over to Mac and have not had a problem since. Best move I ever made...

Dianne,

My son is a computer (geek... lol) guy for a large university. I sent him a copy of your post and asked him for suggestions/advice on your problem. He's at work now, but when he gets back to me later, I'll let you know what he says.

Hope that somebody can help you. I hate computer problems!!

hi, thanks so much for trying to help. My computer is a HP and bought it two years ago. I have a cable modem, very fast. I do have virus protection from Norton. I saw a report and it showed Internet Explorer stopped working. I tried backing up my files, which are not many and pictures and it was working fine till the end and then said it failed.

I doubt there is anything wrong with your computer. Most likely it is your browser you are using. I had the same problem you had. I hated IE so bad. I asked around and a lot of people recommended firefox so I downloaded it and it worked great for a few months and then it started crashing on me. Started out crashing about once a day and then it became several times a day. A lot of people recommended google chrome and so about a month ago I downloaded it and so far so good. I don't have any problems on FB anymore either. One thing you have to watch with any of these browsers is adding a lot of "add on's". Some of them sound really great but read reviews before you add them and see if others are having problems with them. The only problem I have with chrome is that browser does not have a "toolbar" at the top of the page. You know, the thing that says edit, tools, and such. Don't know why this is but apparently they have not come up with one for it yet. I am certainly no computer whiz and I am just letting you know that I have experienced the same problems you are having and what I have done so far to try to help the problem. By the way I have Vista as well. I have never heard anyone say anything good about it. Also note that sometimes when your virus scan is doing its full scan, your computer will hang up and not respond etc. I have noticed this with McAffe. Mine does a full scan once a week that takes several hours to complete and I might as well not try to use my computer while it is doing that. Hope this helps you a little.

If it's your browser, I recommend the Google Chrome. It's by far the fastest browser I've used. :)

Thank you all...I'm back up and running. It was Internet Explorer! I downloaded Firefox and everything is working great.

I asked for help and got it fast. When my husband asked how I fixed it, I said with a little help from spoiled maltese! :HistericalSmiley:
