My dad will be deceased one year the 27th. I didn't know if I should plan a family gathering on that evening for dinner or not.

What's the proper thing to do is? I don't want this day to be forgotten and allow to be just any other day.

What if you do what we do for national holidays and remember his birthday rather than the day he died... like we do for Lincoln, Washington, etc. How about a more personal remembrance like lighting a memorial candle on the day he died. You can get them at the grocery store...the small votive size ones and they last exactly 24 hours. I usually light one on the day my mother died and it is so eery when the next morning the candle is out. It really does feel good to do the candle thing...
