Unusual peeing

Well heck, I blew it. The puppies were supposed to be spayed at the end of last month (according to what the vet told me) but they seem to have gone into heat before we could get that done. No big deal as far as mess (only found one spot on the comforter so far...just put an old sheet on it in the meantime)...and will take care of the spay as soon as their heat is finished.

But this is weirding/bumming me out. Daisy was the hold out as far as getting the potty training thing down and now she is just dropping and peeing wherever the mood strikes her (why? is this because she is in heat, hormonal or just a major backslide?) AND Pip (who was spayed right after we rescued her - in October) seems obsessed with Daisy (constantly smelling her back there and then peeing on top of wherever Daisy pees (be it inside or out). I'm guessing Gracie is in heat too (she licks a lot) but she isn't acting any different at all, nor is Pip reacting to her like she is to Daisy ???

What the heck is going on here??? I'm at my wit's end :(

Sounds like there may be a UTI going on there. I'd have the vet check her.
I have not got my sugar spayed yet either but she still goes on the pee pad the same as always, no change there. What is UTI?
urinary tract infection... that's something I hadn't thought of, thanks, Brit *just ASSumed it was related to her heat cycle :p* Will have that looked into...

(But wonder why Pip is doing this new pee on Daisy's pee spot behavior?)
ohh yea i should have figured that out. Thanks
We went thru the same thing with our Bitsy. She went into heat 2 weeks before she was scheduled to be spayed. I thought she had an UTI because she was peeing all over the place and peeing often. She had one two months prior so I thought that maybe it hadn't fully cleared up or that it was back again. We took her to the vet and also brought a urin sample in. It turns out she was in heat. No UTI. The vet said that because she was swollen down there she may have felt the need to pee more often. Everything turned out ok. She'll be spayed at the end of this month. Want to make sure she doesn't go back into heat again.

That is so good to know!!! I'll bet that's what it is. Gracie must have gone into her heat first since she licked herself and peed so much I thought she had a UTI but she didn't (but Gracie is my star pupil - she' been peeing outside since she was very little - taught herself how to use the doggy door - even helped teach the older rescues hahaa). Daisy must be in a slightly different phase of it then... can't wait til this nonsense is over :p We have been leaving our Little Green Machine filled and on stand by :p :( ... Will probably wait til a month or so after the symptoms have passed to get it done (since the don't go into heat again for another 6 months, I think)...hoping those upper canine baby teeth will fall out in the meantime (if not they'll get taken out during the spay procedure)

Thanks to ALL for your feedback :)
This is normal female esterous behavior. Even though there aren't any males around, there might be. She is marking to let everyone know she is in season and is in the need of a mate. The girls will hump and ride her. They will all act weird and bark at each other, sniff each other, and mark. Most girls will keep themselves really clean and you might not even notice they are in season except for the great big vulva. They bleed about 5 to 7 days. The rule of thumb with estrous is 9 days coming into season. The bleeding and licking and marking. 9 days standing, they are receptive to the male. The vulva when touched will actually lift up, 9 days going out. There is a whole lot more to this, this is the basics. Dogs just like women will cycle together.

Whew!!! Thanks for this feedback... it's been truly frustrating/puzzling. How many days does this usually go on for (the weird peeing/behavior) all in all? It was so bizzare to see our spayed female acting weird too...must be some pretty strong hormones/smells to a dog... their girly parts are so little I can't see any outward signs (other than the licking/behavior issues). I'll be super glad when it's over and done with...

Hello all,

I was searching the forum trying to see if I could find anything on this subject and came across this thread. My Buckeye has been showing some odd behavior lately when it comes to peeing (and pooping at times). Lately, he's peed on my bed, my floor, my grandson's book bag, and just today, his tennis shoe. I'm not sure what's going on but this is not like him as he is pad trained. This morning, he pooped on the pad, then beside it on the floor. He also peed on floor RIGHT beside the pad. These responses seem to refer to females and being spayed, etc. I'm not sure what the deal is with Buckeye, who is male. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A new post came up today that made me think of you... maybe you should get him tested for SARDS? http://spoiledmaltese.com/forum/52-maltese-health-behavior/106125-sards.html Also could be a UTI but because you mentioned he was also pooping oddly... Will send you this thread link via PM also just to be sure you see it. Please keep us posted...

Hello all...so happy to report that all is well with Buckeye. He doesn't have a UTI, and the vet is convinced that he's just doing the "marking" thing that they do at his age (he just turned 6 months). His neuter appt has been set for some time (6/28) so hopefully that will help (she says sometimes it does, depends on the dog..keeping my fingers crossed).

As far as the pooping mishaps, I think I gave up a little too soon, thinking he was completely house broken, not to mention that as of April, he started to be home alone so I think that upset him a bit. So, I'm sort of "starting over" with that. Other than that, he's great and as usual, they all marveled at how sweet and beautiful he is, and how white his coat is (says he's the most beautiful, white dog they've seen in a long time) :) Does ya just love when that happens?

Hugs
So glad all is well!!! back to "potty-training 101" LOL

It is a wonderful feeling isn't it? Malts are the most beautiful dogs and we're all so very lucky to be their mommies (and daddies).
