UPDATE! POST #1 my phones are dead :(

Phone trouble. I have a Uniden corded phone that came with 2 cordless as a set. The phones themselves aren't dead because I can still access the numbers stored and check past messages. But I can't get a connection. I thought it was the phones because I still have internet access, high speed not dial up. Can't think of the right term right now, but it goes through my phone line but does not actually tie up my phone so I can still make calls and be on line at the same time. Can my phone line be out but I still have internet? Went out and bought new phones today and it's still dead. Anybody have any ideas before I call the phone company?

I was going to ask on FB but decided if the answer is really obvious making me look totally dense, I'd rather it be here with my SM family.

UPDATE
WooHoo!! I have my phones back!! My poor mom had to come to my house early this morning and just sit there waiting for the phone guy to come. The phone company ran some kind of a test on 'their end' that told them the problem was inside the house. Well....weren't they surprised to find out that it was outside the house. :HistericalSmiley: Guess the wire had broken in half. I find that a bit odd since the house is not even 5 years old yet. Oh well. I have phones again and I didn't even have to see that look of 'lady this was soooo obvious, you must be a total ditz'. :smheat:

Sounds to me like a call to the phone company is in order.
If you tried the new phones you bought and they still didn't work, it has to be the actual phone line or the service that is the problem, not the phones themselves. :)
*sigh* That's what I thought. I just hate it when I call in a professional for something that was actually an easy fix that I didn't think about and they give you that look of, 'oh yeah, she's a total ditz'.

Don't worry about the "total ditz look." I don't know about your company but on the few occasions that I've had to call Verizon they must automatically assume that everyone is a ditz because they start by asking a question like "did you check to see if the phone is plugged in?" And computer/printer support teams do the same. One of these days I'm going to answer "Plug? Is there a plug? Are you sure? No, there can't be a plug because I buy wireless everything."
You have DSL. You bought a new phone. Your new phone is not going to work if the battery inside is not charged. It can take 24 hours to charge. Same for your old phone. There is a battery somewhere and after a while they can go bad and you need to replace it. Check if there is a battery in the base unit. Do you have a plain old phone that you need only to plug in the phone line to work ? This would tell you if it is the line or your phone.
One other thing you might try - with DSL you have to have a filter that the phones plug into before they go into the wall. Radio Shack carries them - you might try a new filter first since I did have one go bad.
Last week our phones were out, tv on and so was the computer. Don't you just love it!!! To call the cable co is a horror movie in itself . Problem was coming from another State and phones were back on within an hour.

I've unplugged both the cordless phones and the corded phone still doesn't work. When I tried the new phone, it was a corded phone, not a cordless. No batteries on the corded phone. However, I used my existing cords. Guess maybe I should try the new cords too.

Hmmm...never thought about the filter going bad. I've got 3 of them.

This happened to me once before and the phones were back on the next day. I thought again it was my phones but maybe it was something like what happened to you. They've been out since Sunday. :(
Crystal maybe we are not meaning the same thing. There are barely any phones left on the market that are not cordless. The new phones have a base unit that is plugged in all the time to the phone outlet on your wall. The actual phone is cordless and you can carry it around your house. Does your base unit have a speaker phone ? If yes you can check that way too if you have a signal. Or you need a phone that does not need electricity to work. Not many around anymore.

This is very similar to what I have now.

Uniden CEZAI2998 Corded/Cordless Phone System - 1 Corded Handset/Base, 1 Cordless Handset, Digital Answering System, Caller ID, Orange Back Light, Large Display at TigerDirect.com

I've got a service call in. It could be until the 30th before a service tech is dispatched. Thank heavens for cell phones!

If you don't have a dial tone on your base unit (who by the way yes is corded) it's the phone line. Specially if you hooked up a brand new phone and it does the same thing. Service is only dispatched on the 30th ? Wow ! don't they have a way to check your line without dispatching somebody ? we have not had a problem here but in Houston we had Southwestern Bell check the line a few times. They only dispatched somebody if they could not find the problem by checking the line from their end. By the way I don't know how they do it, just know they can. Hope it's not something in your walls. In Houston if it was inside it was YOUR problem and you had to pay for it. We were lucky, it was always their problem. It is rarely YOURS.
I've only had phone problems once - a long time ago - and it was their problem from the box in the yard to the house. I was out off and on for about 3 weeks, and they wound up crediting me for something like 17 days of service. Make sure they do something like that for you if it's their problsm.
