Sarah, even if you submit to engines it is hard to get good rankings. Do you know how to optimize your site so it'll be "seen" by the SE spiders? People at my company who handle this area have spent days at seminars and taking classes learning all this.... It is not easy at all to be ranked in the top......

I'm very new at this. I have no clue what SE Spiders are. I just signed up with google and you put in keywords that you want your site to come up on when entered. I was good because they just changed it to where you can pay as little at 5 cents a click and you can set a limit like 10 dollars a day or whatever is right for you. This was much better than paying 100s of dollars a year. Any advice is welcomed

Gosh, if you're at the level where you don't know what spiders are I wouldn't even know where to begin.... Here is a link that is extremely informative. The site is edited by Danny Sullivan, who is a Search Engine guru.... if you have time to read all the info, this site will teach you all the basics... and more...

Thanks K/C - I can use that information too. I printed out the info. Can you tell me what the Web Hosting does besides cashing in the money we pay them ?
Aren't they supposed to do that stuff for us ? If yes, mine is not very good at it.

Regarding what web hosting does for you ... it depends on your contract with them. You should have a contract with everything spelled out regarding how long before they will respond to outages, how they monitor the site, etc.

Many hosting companies have a wide range of options from just putting your web site on their servers to doing search engine marketing and web design, etc. At the company I work for we have one comany doing our hosting and programming the functionality and two other companies that do our search engine marketing and yet another that does the visual design.

Be careful with that, $10 a day over a year is not $100's a year, it is $3,650 a year :T

Sarah, there are two types of Search Engine Marketing... The "Organic" and "Pay per Click". The Organic is the natural ranking and "Pay per Click" is where you pay to get your listing at the top in the shaded blue portion (Google) above where the listings start or at the right-hand side of the page. You pay for keywords and when someone types in the keyword you have bought, your listing will appear. You only pay if someone clicks on your listing. You pay the amount that that particular keyword is going for.

My web hosting put my website on their server and submitted it to search engines and put in the meta tags. But for now we don't come up when putting in keywords, like when doing a search for something.

There is a lot more to do than this... that is just a start. Is your site "optimized" for search engines? There are certain designs that greatly increase the chance of spiders seeing and indexing you for keywords. We have companies who constantly monitor our rankings and tweak things as needed. Is your site e-commerce or informational?
