when do boys start lifting their legs?

Milo is my first boy dog so I'm new to this lol.
He is 12 months old now, not neutered and still squats like a girl - not that I mind at all - it just seems like all the the other dogs that are the same age as him seemed to be lifting their legs for months now.

I dunno - maybe Milo is slow to mature - he still has such a puppy personality and look!

Do some dogs never lift their legs?

Its very funny - one of my girls always lifts her leg, the other sometimes does(both are spayed) and my un-neutered boy squats lol!

Some never lift. I wouldn't worry about it.
Maybe you're one of the lucky ones. I've had some lift and some not. I've even had intact males not lift.

haha - maybe so - I've had no marking issues with him or anything.
I have an 8 yr. old intact male who has been bred and still does not lift his leg.
Our old Maltese was 13 when he passed, and he never lifted ever, but the Maltese we have now is the complete opposite and can't seem to ever pee without lifting. So I think it really depends on the dog.
I had boys that were intact and were bred and they never lifted. And then I've had girls that were spayed who always lifted. Go figure.

Orla -- just count your blessings that he isn't marking.
I heard that dogs learn to lift their legs from watching other dogs, not sure though! Yeager's not lifting his leg while pee peeing and I hope it stays this way :D

oh I know! My 2 worries when getting a boy were marking and humping toys etc - he has never marked and only went through a week or so long stage of humping 1 toy and thats it! I am so lucky with him!

oh the humping toys...Yeager started at a very young age, stopped for 2 weeks, and now found his new favorite. He just won't leave that horse toy alone.:unsure:
I'd give my eye teeth if my boy wouldn't lift his leg.. A marker forever I'm afraid..Love the little guy anyway.. He has a very gentle spirit despite the leg in the air!!! :)
12-year-old cocker always squatted. As soon as we brought Mason home he started lifting his leg and now so does Mason.
Rocky so far has not lifted his leg...I like it that way. He's not humping since he got neutered. My mini schnauzer female always humped. Consider yourself lucky!

Nelson just randomly started lifting his leg one day. He was a little over 6 months old...and is not neutured yet. He hasn't seen other dogs either...so I dunno about them learning by watching other dogs. It seems he moreso started after we started house training him. He didn't really lift on the wee-wee pad, and sometimes still squats on that. But outside there is so much fun stuff to lift ones leg on!!! :HistericalSmiley:
My boy pups seemed to learn on their own. One of them tried it one day on a tree, and almost fell over he lifted it so high. OMG it was so funny, but if he had seen me laughing at him, he never would have done it again.

Spookie is spayed, and humps her teddy bear. Someone at the dog park said it was a dominence thing. Dunno.

HAHAH Nelson too. He was a little wobbly at first. He's getting better though. And lifts it soooo high and almost falls over. Poor little guys... They can't pee as high as the big dogs! :HistericalSmiley:

It's funny though, when I take him to the petsore, and you can see all the pillars outside are all peed on...he will NOT lift his leg there or pee there at all...he smells it but thats it. Andy used to always pee on them, on poles, fire hydrants, sides of buildings and stuff when we'd go on walks or to the store. But not Nelson, not yet anyway.

Milo belongs to the non-markers boys:wub: that is nice ^_^

Snowy is a boy who lifts his leg. Crystal doesn't at all.

oh and regarding puppy personality and look. I think that this breed tends to have that puppy personality for years. My oldest is Snowy (6 years) he still acts like a lil pup, playful, goofy, and all - a crazy one though
