Wilma...and our vacation

1518 Views 23 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mylittlebella
Well, it appears Wilma may be headed towards the Gulf, panhandle...we are supposed to be headed to Panama City Beach on Friday but IF it turns north, it's gonna be entering the gulf by Friday. What should I do? Normally we go THIS week but our kid's break got pushed back a week this year.

Our weatherman says it has the potential to be really bad.
You will know in a few days...I think it will give you plenty of warning. If it is that bad, they will start evacuating before Friday...
I am actually hearing it will enter the Gulf on Saturday...and then it'll take a few days to even get there. I called the condo owner and he says it's open now and we can come whenever. I am wishing we could leave tonight but hubby doesn't think he can leave until tomorrow. At least we'd get a good 5-6 days b4 we'd have to worry about evacuation...waddya think?
Well I have a couple of thoughts on that one.

1--I grew up there and trust me....I ain't lost nothing in Panama City to go back there for. Yes, the Gulf is beautiful but I hate that city. Okay, I vented.

2--There is only one major hwy (2 lanes) going north out of there (Hwy 77.) There is only one major 4 lane road going east out of there (Hwy 231.) One major road going west (Hwy 90) which will lead you into even more traffic in Destin (BEAUTIFUL VACATION SPOT). So all in all the road system there sucks and evacuation will take days not hours. So if you think the storm is going there then I would not unless you want to spend your vacation on the road in your car. (For anyone who is thinking...what about going south.....nope no roads going south because that is the Gulf of Mexico.)

That is about all I can say about that

Let ME start by saying I think PCB is BEAUTIFUL and since I don't have to LIVE there and only VISIT...maybe that's why I am ok with it. This will be our 4th year there. We truly love it. I was looking for personal advice on what you would do if you had a vacation scheduled somewhere and had to decide...not advice on location.

All I can tell you if you would have to evacuate is, sitting in a car moving about 10mph every 20mins for a total of 14 hours sucks!

Well I am certainly no native of this country, but going by the history of this hurricane season my advice to you would be to give it a miss
, I certainly would. Basically if you go there you may just have to turn around and come back and the journey back could be dreadful if evacuation becomes mandatory. I think the least amount of vehicles on the road out would make it better for those who have to move out to safety, and it wouldn't be the nicest way for you and the kids to spend a vacation

From what I have been seeing on the weather report this one could be very bad and so far this season they have been fairly accurate with the forcasts, and these storms are so unpredictable and dangerous that if it were me contemplating going there under the circumstances I would be thinking twice for sure

Sorry about the emoticon comment...didn't mean to offend anyone.
Wow this really stinks for you--best thing I would say is pay close attention to the radio. I'm not sure I would go - do you have a plan B for you vacation?

CHange it to the Tennessee mountains. Try to find a place in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. I guarantee you will have a good time!

Sassy's Mommy,

You lived here? Small world! I live here now. Only because my husband is at Tyndall and I can't wait until we leave. I work at Gulf Coast and like what I do, but this city is something else. It's like going back in time...

I totally understood your post and if your read closely my original post said in #1 that it was a "vent" not advise.

You are absolutely correct it is a beautiful place, but having lived in the panhandle for 21 years I know for CERTAIN there are nicer places...ie, Destin, and Ft. Walton Beach. However, I am sure as you said you LOVE it there and it is your vacation. I did give good advice on evacuation in that area. Their evacuation plan is time comsuming because there are almost NO evacuation roads available. Enjoy! if you do decide to make the trip.

Yeppers! We moved there the summer before I went into the 6th grade and I lived there until I was about 27 I guess. I graduated from Bay County High School right there on Harrison Ave, and attended Gulf Coast (although I graduated college at the USC.) Anyway, I am sure that you will agree, with all of the backward ways there the newness around Destin is FAR better than PC Beach. We lived in College Point just outside of Lynn Haven. Is that near you? I am assuming that since your husband is at Tyndall you may be over around Springfield or Callaway?

Well the problem w/ Destin and Ft Walton Beach is that condos/accomodations are WAY too expensive for us...even in October. We have looked in that area....but there simply isn't something that fits our family at the price we need to have to afford it. We found a 2br 2 bath condo at a brand new building for 550$ for 7 nights. You just can't beat that.
