Looking for a reputable breeder

Hello forum! Someone on Reddit suggested I join this forum to begin my search, so here I am!

We lost our Maltese, Snickerdoodle, this past June after a six month long battle with cancer. I tried very hard to save him, to heal him, and the loss of him has been surreal. He was my best friend and constant companion, and we’ve been grieving for him terribly. I went to visit an old friend recently who also has a Maltese for a little dog therapy. She encouraged me not to wait too long, because the grief has been so overwhelming, and she could see the toll it’s taken on me. So I decided to begin doing some research.

I’m a mother of three, all grown, two already gone. My husband works at the local hospital, and I take care of our home, gardens, and cats, who miss their canine brother, too. (I used to breed pointed Persians for show, and still have three of my retired show kitties.) I was able to apply the skills I learned to grooming our pup, who was an indoor pet, like our kitties.

He was my first and only dog, but he was the best! I know I’ll never find another like him, but I do think he would want me to give all this love to another dog rather than merely languish in grief for him. I feel like part of my soul is Maltese now, so I know that when I find the right breeder, we will want another Maltese.

I am looking for a reputable breeder who strives to breed to the breed standard, and who does their due diligence to ensure healthy bloodlines in their lineage. I am located in California, but am willing to fly if necessary. My Doodlebug came from the east coast, and I flew out to bring him home. My pets are indoor only, spoiled rotten, and treated like royal members of the family. I’m looking for a breeder who puts as much heart into their program as I once did when I bred Persians. Please share any recommendations you may have. I’m not in a rush, I’m more concerned with finding the right breeder and pup.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your little one!

To find a reputable breeder, I recommend you start with local dog shows. Search for shows where Maltese are entered and attend, introducing yourself to breeders and learning as much as you can about their lines. The American Maltese Association has lists of members who breed and who have agreed to their code of ethics as well as the locations of shows and "specialties." And don't pass up the opportunity to welcome a retiree into your home - Several members on this forum are happy they did just that.

Good luck in your search.

I am not sure if you would want our breeder, as our Maltese does have the common eye discharge problem, is slightly more blond than the breed standard, and at 10 pounds is somewhat bigger than average, but also has been the most affectionate, loving, happy dog I've ever known (picture of him and my husband below, both sticking their tongues out at me). He's four years old now. We visited the breeder in her home where at least at the time, the puppies were set up in her living room playpen with their mother, and all seemed very used to frequent handling.
